ADAPT Books Selected for Presentation

Through the CTIFMF’s Adapt program, creatives, producers, and rights holders from the publishing and film industries will be brought together to explore the possibilities of cinematic book adaptations as well as to develop an economic model and business practice that accounts for our African realities.

Selina Ukwuoma is the international mentor invited to contribute to ADAPT.  Selina is a freelance script consultant who began her career at literary agency Curtis Brown working on a number of adaptations including 2008 BAFTA winner BOY A. She has since gone on to advise on award-winning indie films such as 2014 Teddy winner THE WAY HE LOOKS and this year’s Goyas triumph SUMMER 1993, both Foreign Language Oscars entries from their respective countries. She will kick off the 2 days of the ADAPT forum on October 11th with the masterclass: From Book to Screen. She will then consult one on one with each team to prepare them for their presentation to an audience of potential producers and writer/ directors.

Nozipho Mngomezulu, a partner in the Technology, Media, Telecommunications & Intellectual Property Practice at Webber Wentzel, will lead a masterclass on Legal Aspects of Adaptations on the 12th of October. This will be followed by a panel discussion where she will take one of the seats alongside Duduzile Mabaso, publisher at Black Letter Media, author Imraan Coorvadia, producer Brigid Olen, as well as moderator, Selina Ukwuoma.

The following authors, along with publishers, will participate in the books presentation that is aimed at bringing African stories to the screen, as CTIFMF Market Director Elias Ribeiro explains further, “Our intention is to facilitate a space for dialogue between the worlds of publishing and film. The 6 respected authors invited will present their highly topical books that are currently available for optioning to be developed into screenplays.

We sincerely hope all of them will have a deal in place after participating at our forum. The CTIFMF is inviting not only Cape Town based producers to attend, but will also bring in the top players from Johannesburg and Durban, as well as UK based talent agents David Kayser from Casarotto Ramsay, and Cynthia Okoye from Curtis Brown.”
