Rox And Spoen Are Through To The Finale Of My Kitchen Rules SA

This Sunday (23 September) on My Kitchen Rules SA, country sisters from Winterton, Rox and Spoen, became the first team to make it through to the final round of the competition and are one step away from possibly being crowned the My Kitchen Rules SA Season 2 champions!

The country sisters took on Johannesburg-based food buddies Donald and Luyanda in the first semi-final of the local reality cooking competition, where their flavourful three-course menu earned them high scores from the show’s resident judges and the expert guest judging panel of Reuben Riffel, Vanessa Marx, Karen Dudley and Lentswe Bhengu.

Sticking to their strengths, Rox and Spoen put forward a pleasing three-course menu that showcased their talent for cooking with vegetables. For their first course they presented an aubergine dip with flatbreads and dukkah sprinkle which the judges loved, “visually, the flavours and everything is very pleasing,” Chef Vanessa Marx complimented. Their main dish of lamb rack with grilled cauliflower, onion and garlic puree, brussel sprouts and mushrooms was a close call for the sisters. With ten minutes to go, their lack of lamb was not done, and if that wasn’t enough pressure, the pair had to fry two more chops in the last thirty seconds! Nonetheless, in true Rox and Spoen style, they delivered on flavour, presentation and attention to detail, with the judges complimenting their use of vegetables, “loving the puree… loving the vegetables,” judge Karen Dudley raved. The pair rose to the occasion once again for their dessert, serving up a flavour-packed pumpkin ice-cream with ginger biscuit crumb and salted caramel, “the flavour combination, was superb,” an impressed J’ noted.

From the beginning, Donald and Luyanda’s flavours didn’t find favour. Their starter of biltong-crusted venison carpaccio was not the prettiest or tastiest of plates for the judges, who were blind tasting all of the dishes, “ flavour-wise for me, it’s very quiet,” chef Lentswe said. The judges enjoyed the food buddies’ second course of seared kingklip and raved about the flavours in the corned bisque, but felt that the plating didn’t make sense and the kingklip was unfortunately not cooked through.

It was a very close call for both teams during the dessert phase of the cook-off. During the last seven minutes, Donald and Luyanda still had their malva pudding baking in the oven and Rox and Spoen had none of their elements ready for plating. Again, Donald and Luyanda missed the mark with this one by changing up a traditional malva pudding, which the judges felt was not a good idea as it didn’t complement the Amarula ice cream and custard. “The malva pudding is not at all what a malva pudding must be,” a disappointed Karen said.

In the end, it was Rox and Spoen’s flavourful three-course presentation winning by a country mile! Rox and Spoen garnered a grand overall score of 42 out of 60 from the expert panel of judges, beating Donald and Luyanda by a whopping 11 points.

Next week will see Parkview moms Maj and Joleen battle it out against Durban’s spicy couple, Kim and Pashi. Which team of home cooks will cook off against Rox and Spoen for a shot at the R1 Million grand prize?
