Crime Statistics: The Story behind the Numbers

From an increase in the murder rate to brazen cash-in-transit robberies – newly released crime statistics paint a grim picture. The latest data even suggests that in some communities, the murder rate rivals that of war torn countries. However, some experts say, these statistics could provide more information to help improve the way the South African Police Service and intelligence units tackle crime.

Construction is vital for South Africa’s economy, but with the theft of scaffolding from building sites, the industry loses around R460-million a year – losses passed on to consumers through increased building costs. Reusable and robust, scaffolding virtually never needs to be replaced unless it’s worn out, become unsafe and can be scrapped. Carte Blanche follows the trail of a 4-year investigation that revealed

a lucrative black market in stolen scaffolding.
