Aquaman : Review

Having seen him in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and later in Justice League, we are now treated to a more intimate telling of the story of Arthur Curry / Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) as he learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Not only that, but in a dark time, he must now step forward to lead his people, be a hero, and save the surface and underwater worlds.

The film follows several story arches, starting with Aquaman doing good while staying out of the public eye. Still, we are privy to a lot of family drama, amidst the royalty of Atlantis, the jealousy, hatred, and lust of power that will lead to war and the deaths of millions.

Aquaman takes the DC Universe in a positive direction, putting itself on equal footing to Wonder Woman, and showing that DC really can get a film story just right. We get action, thrills, massive underwater worlds to marvel at, and a story full of characters embodied by a talented cast. A character that for the most part has eluded the big screen treatment, save appearances in a few other DC films, now has his origin told to a whole new generation of fans.

A word of caution, when seeing Aquaman in the cinema, in South Africa. All too many screens are not set up correctly, either the technical knowledge to actually show a 3D movie is sorely lacking, or cinemas just do not care about the audience experience. The film is way too dark on the 3D screen, meaning one misses out on so much detail. This is sad, given the great visual feast to be had for the effects. Vote with your feet, do not settle for a terrible screen, a dark movie, and a time wasted. Demand the cinema either fix their facilities, or get your money back. This can not be tolerated.
