André Schwartz Celebrates His Successful Career With Brand-new Single, Album And Show

“Life is a journey. Sometimes there are twists and turns that hurt and even make our feet bleed. Other times, the burden we have to bare becomes so heavy that it breaks us. But somehow we always manage to get up and try again. Hope and faith is what carry us forward, even when things go wrong,” South Africa’s biggest entertainer, André Schwartz, reveals about the meaning behind the title track of his long-awaited new album, DIE PAD.

This heartfelt Pop ballad, written by Roux Cloete, is the third release from his upcoming album and is one of those songs that speaks directly to the soul and has a message that resonates with audiences of all ages.

“Each of us have had to overcome obstacles in life and that is what this song is about. It is a beautiful production by Christi Schutte that I really enjoy singing, so I hope that people will enjoy listening to it just as much,” he says.

DIE PAD follows in the footsteps of Tweede Kans and Ek sal Wag, which were both very well received and featured on the charts of some of the country’s biggest radio stations. Both singles were accompanied by music videos that have already had thousands of hits on YouTube and can still be seen on television.

André, who has recently received a lifetime achievement award at the 2019 Ghoema Awards Ceremony, is very excited about finally sharing his new album with fans. He describes it as a modern Afrikaans Pop album that combines a fresh new sound with certain elements of his previous work.

The CD boasts ten original tracks, created by various songwriters, as well as four bonus tracks that include existing hits like Piano Man, Lief Vir Alles Hier and more. I Dare To Dream, a heartfelt duet with the legendary Yvonne Chaka Chaka, can also be found on this impressive track list.”

“The main inspiration behind the new release was to get back on stage and I enjoy performing again. There has been so many people working on this album and it is amazing how so many different styles and sounds were able to be combined so perfectly in the final product,” he shares. “What makes the album so special is that every song has a different story to tell and I think that it is something that listeners will appreciate.”

When asked about his favourite songs on the new album, he admits that Negentien September – which Christa Steyn created for the PG du Plessis film of the same name – is very special to him because he is a big fan of du Plessis’s work. He also loves the lyrics of Perfek Vir My, because he thinks it’s an honest and beautiful way to tell someone how wonderful they are.

The release of his long-awaited album coincides with an exciting new show of the same name, directed by Casper de Vries. Described as a joyful yet nostalgic journey through the life of this incredible musician, it is a veritable feast of singing, speckled with anecdotes from André’s past and present, and showcases his phenomenal talent – especially his incredible opera singing voice.

“Die Pad is aimed at sharpening people’s perspective on and appreciation for life and the stories are filled with humour and positive thoughts. I also really want people to know that I am planning on making as much music as possible in the future,” he explains.

Music has been a part of André’s life from a young age and he made his television debut at fourteen. He is classically trained, both vocally and as a pianist, and is therefore equally comfortable behind the piano and microphone.

This versatile superstar is not only an outstanding vocalist, songwriter, stage performer, actor (Sterlopers, 7de Laan) and television presenter; but also a successful business man who takes on every challenge in life with great passion and precision.

As a recording artist he has released fourteen albums, of which many have reached gold status, and has written and composed several of his radio hits himself. He is best-known for songs like Ek wil jou nooit weer sien and Lief vir alles hier, as well as his ability to captivate and entertain audiences with his charming and lively stage personality.

He is also an extremely gifted music theatre performer and has starred in leading roles of many world-class productions, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pirates of Penzance and The Phantom of the Opera. He received various awards for his performance as ‘The Phantom’ and is acknowledged as one of the best ‘Phantoms’ to ever grace the stage and even carries Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stamp of approval.

André Schwartz’s new album was definitely worth the wait and is a striking testimony of his successful career so far. Not only does every song on DIE PAD showcase his exceptional talent and creativity as a musician, but it also confirms why he is one of the most respected artists in the industry.

Coming Up On Carte Blanche – 21 July 2019

On M-Net & M-Net HD [101], Sunday, 21 July 2019 at 19:00 & again on M-Net Plus 1 [901] at 20:00

Former President Zuma Testifies

It’s been a week of legal head-butting and obfuscation in the much-anticipated appearance of former President Jacob Zuma before the Judicial Commission into allegations of state capture led by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Claiming he’s the target of a long-standing political conspiracy, the former president raised fresh allegations of a plot to kill him and denied his friendship with the Gupta family had any bearing on government appointments. Carte Blanche examines the importance of this week’s testimony in the bigger political and judicial landscape.

Producer: Sophia Phirippides
Presenter: Derek Watts

Cyber Impersonation Scam

From your bank account details to your home address – your emails hold a treasure trove of personal information about you and every transaction you make can be traced right back to your electronic signature. Every day in South Africa people transfer and receive funds, using the internet and from the comfort of their own homes – but where there’s money moving, criminals aren’t far behind. Now, by intercepting and impersonating you on your emails, cyber hackers are making off with thousands of rands in fraudulent electronic transfers. Carte Blanche investigates.

Vigilante Justice

Against the backdrop of South Africa’s soaring crime rate and the outsourcing of safety and security to private companies in suburbia, Carte Blanche gets unprecedented access to the well-organised and notorious Mayitsha group that has become prosecutor, judge and executioner for anyone accused of crime in their Eastern Cape home village – and they claim a startling success rate. Research shows that 3% of South Africans belong to vigilante groups. Can this kind of outsourced justice restore the peace or will it further perpetuate division in a country where citizens are fed up with the high levels of violence.

Producer: Tarryn Crossman
Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli

Johnny Clegg – A Giant among Men

Carte Blanche pays tribute to legendary musician, songwriter and activist Johnny Clegg. Best known for some of his iconic hits such as ‘Impi’ and ‘Asimbonanga’ – a song paying homage to Nelson Mandela and other struggle stalwarts of his time – the man fondly known as the ‘White Zulu’ succumbed to pancreatic cancer earlier this week. As South Africa mourns the passing of yet another musical giant, we remember a man who embraced, comforted and fought for his compatriots, during a time in this country when it was dangerous to do so.

Producer: Diana Lucas
Presenter: Claire Mawisa

Film Review

The Lion King (2019) : Review

The story we all know, retold with stunning photorealism. With the tragic murder of his father, Mufasa (James Earl Jones – Rogue One), a young lion prince, Simba (young Simba JD McCrary and older Simba Donald Glover – Solo: A Star Wars Story, Spider-Man: Homecoming), flees the kingdom on the advice of his uncle, Scar (Chiwetel Ijiofor – Doctor Strange, Triple 9). Now he must learn the true meaning of responsibility, bravery, his place in the world, and the circle of life.

For those who grew up with the animated version of The Lion King (1994), enough time has passed that one avoids the risk of having a fun childhood memory spoiled. The songs we all know and love are all there, all the characters present, yet we are treated to a new line-up of voices. New voices, that is, apart from the legendary James Earl Jones, playing Mufasa in both films.

While the graphics and detail in this latest incarnation are great, they do pose the problem of disconnecting the viewer from the story. The animals feel more akin to the watching of a nature documentary, with actors reading lines, rather than being connected to the voices and emotion they should contain.

The story remains sound, the music evokes excitement, and there are a good many laughs. But apart from the graphics upgrade, this version of the film comes second to the first outing of the lovable lions. A good try, but falling a little short of the mark.

The Lion King opens 19 July 2019 in South African cinemas.

Johnny Clegg 1953 – 2019

It is with immense sadness that we confirm that Jonathan (Johnny) Clegg, OBE OIS succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 66 on the afternoon of 16 July 2019 at his family home in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Johnny leaves deep foot prints in the hearts of every person that considers him/herself to be an African. He showed us what it was to assimilate to and embrace other cultures without losing your identity. An anthropologist that used his music to speak to every person. With his unique style of music he traversed cultural barriers like few others. In many of us he awakened awareness.

Johnny was born on 7 June 1953 in Bacup, Lancashire England and moved to Johannesburg, South Africa with his Rhodesian mother when he was 6 years old. His exposure to Zulu migrant workers during adolescence introduced him to the culture and music. His involvement with black musicians often saw him arrested during Apartheid.

At the age of 17, together with Sipho Mchunu they formed their first band called Juluka. At the age of 33 in 1986 during the height of Apartheid he partnered with Dudu Zulu to form his second inter-racial band called Savuka. Clegg also recorded several solo albums and enjoyed international success selling out concerts wherever he performed.

Apart from lecturing at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Natal respectively, Johnny studied anthropology and combined his studies with music.

He was awarded by a number of local and international bodies for his contribution to music and society notably by the French Government in 1991 with a Knight of Arts and Letters, and in 2015 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. In 2012 he received the Order of Ikhamanga from the South African government. He was awarded a number of Honorary doctorates by the Universities of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), Dartmouth College in the USA and the City University of New York.

He authored and published the book “UkuBuyisa Isidumbu” (1981, Ravan Press), and presented papers on “The Music of Zulu Immigrant Workers in Johannesburg” in 1981 at the Grahamstown International Library of African Music and “Towards an understanding of African Dance: The Zulu Isishameni Style” in 1982 at Rhodes University.

Johnny was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 but despite fighting cancer continued to tour and perform around the world to pay homage to his fans worldwide.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jenny and their two sons Jesse and Jaron.

His passing has left us numb and we request that the family’s privacy be respected during this trying time.

The family will be holding a Private funeral service and we ask you to please respect the families wishes.

There will be a service for public to pay their respects and the details hereof will be announced in due course.
