TV First As SuperSport Interviews All RWC-winning Captains

And, in a first for television, SuperSport has interviewed each one ahead of this year’s tournament in Japan.

The first, with Francois Pienaar, will be broadcast on SuperSport tonight (Monday, 2 September 2019).

The long-form interviews lift the lid on what goes into winning a World Cup and takes in the early days of the event, in the mid-1980s, to more current insights from Richie McCaw, the last man to lift the Webb Ellis Cup, having done so in successive tournaments.

“It took some leg work, but was well worth it,” explained presenter Matthew Pearce. “Many of the stories and insights are remarkable, from David Kirk at the start to Richie McCaw.”

This is a first for an international broadcaster.

“We have produced a series of interviews with significant RWC personalities that will be of enormous value to our viewers,” Pearce added. “Importantly, they are deeply personal and reflective, as opposed to a mere look-ahead to this year’s World Cup.”

Having secured interviews with the illustrious group, SuperSport then decided to cast the net wider, leveraging off the back of Rugby Championship and similar opportunities to produce a series of interviews with other significant World Cup personalities, among them Jean de Villiers, Jake White and Sean Fitzpatrick.

Predictably, their views are never less than forthright and entertaining.
