May The 4th Be With You

May 4th is a day Star Wars fans have chosen to celebrate and honor all-things-Star-Wars, be it by posting Star Wars related content to social media, hosting Star Wars screening parties, wearing Star Wars costumes and clothing, or shopping for Star Wars merchandise.

Why May 4th? Because, as it happens, fans invented a clever turn of phrase based on the classic Star Wars slogan “May the Force Be With You” back in 1978: “May the FOURTH Be With You”. While originally invoked among US fans as a Fourth of July greeting, it was reset to May 4th the following year when a full-page ad appeared in the May 4, 1979 issue of The London Evening News to congratulate British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on her taking office that day: “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”

Since then, and especially in recent years, Star Wars fans have claimed May 4th as their day, a day that has also given Lucasfilm an opportunity to give back to the Star Wars community that honors that galaxy far, far away.

Since 2012, Lucasfilm has encouraged May the 4th activities through its official website and social channels as well as provided built-in discounts and special offers on Star Wars merchandise. And since “May the 4th Be With You” doesn’t carry the same witty punch when translated into other languages, “Star Wars Day” has been adopted to establish a global meaning for this annual worldwide celebration.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (4DX) : Review

That rag-tag bunch of misfits, the Guardians of the Galaxy are back, and continue to search for Peter Quill / Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt – (Guardians of the Galaxy, Passengers) parentage, and this time the story is set to the nostalgic music of Awesome Mixtape 2.

Accompanied yet again by the likes of Gamora (Zoe Saldana – Star Trek Beyond, Star Trek Into Darkness), Drax (Dave Bautista – Marauders), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper – War Dogs, Joy)and a Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel – The Fate of the Furious, xXx: Return of Xander Cage), the group manage to find themselves in trouble, from the very beginning of the film, where we get distracted by a dancing Baby Groot, while the rest are engrossed in battle for a new nemesis, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki – Everest).

We meet other new characters, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues to expand, with Ego (Kurt Russel – Furious 7, Deepwater Horizon) and Stakar Ogord (Sylvester Stallone – Ratchet & Clank, Escape Plan), and of course, the return of other characters who’s stories take a twist or two, such as Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Nebula (Karen Gillan – Oculus).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 brings back much of what we all loved about Vol. 1, the music, the shy dance moves, the awkward silliness of some of the characters. It also brings us a new mixtape of music, laying the grounds for an excellent soundtrack for fans to buy, and best of all, the wise-cracks and humour return.

Couple that with a talented A-list cast, great visual and practical effects, a lot of stunning cinematography, and you have the makings of yet another hit movie.

The 4DX experience of the film will depend in great part on the subjective preferences of each audience member. There is great deal of rather aggressive movement, which may not be the the liking of every cinema goer. While this certainly does add another dimension to the film, screening in 3D at the 4DX, there are those who like to just lean back and observe, rather than become a part of the story.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a surefire hit, having already garnered many positive comments from paid sneak-peeks over the recent long weekend. This is definitely one to see if you’ve been following the long arch of the MCU, and prepares one just a little more, for the coming Infinity War.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens 5 May 2017 in South African cinemas.

Beauty And The Beast : Review

As the song sing, it’s a tale as old as time. The story of Beauty and the Beast has been told, and retold, time and again. But it is the essence of this story that holds so true, even to this day. A story of overcoming, of love for another and one’s self. A story of change, that says no matter who you are, there is good in you, and that good can come to the fore. And it is a story that look past differences.

An adaptation of they Disney fairy tale, about a monstrous looking prince, cursed because of his cold heart, and selfish ways. Punished because of his arrogance. And a young woman, an outcast in her local village, going against the norm. As we are all too familiar, these to meet, and eventually fall in love. We are witness to the trials they must overcome, on the journey to this much sought love.

Taking up the role of the beauty, Belle, is the talented Emma Watson (Noah), bringing with her an immense amount of talent, not just in the acting arena, where is has gone from strength to strength, but adding singing and dancing to the repertoire for the film.

The unlikable prince, turned to a beast, is played by Dan Stevens (The Guest, The Fifth Estate). The role of the Beast demands a lot more physical, and a greater, more ominous presence on-screen than that of Belle.

A story that appeals to both young and old, with a plot not fraught with twists, but rather humour and delight. The story of old, brought into the modern age.

This live action outing is a delight to watch. From the acting and cinematography, to the sets and costumes, and not forgetting all the enchanted household items, transformed from humans as part of the curse that afflicts the Beast. The sets and designs are amazing. Last, but certainly not least, all the songs we know from before are back.

There has been an amount of talk in social media about some controversial scenes. But even looking for place to object, these are a hint in the mind of the viewer, the the very most. At the very least, there are a few incidents that are more funny than anything else. And so, there should be nothing that should cause anyone to shy away from this film, in any way.

Beauty and the Beast is what we have come to demand of Disney, with very high expectations. It is simply a film to enjoy, and a film that will delight. An entertaining story, and one that will live on in the hearts of audiences long after the end credits have rolled.

Beauty and the Beat soundtrack, available now.
