Noughts + Crosses S1

Written by British author Malorie Blackman, this dystopian series’ selling point is that it tells a completely different “us vs. them” story, one that puts black people at the top of the elite list. The series was filmed in South Africa, and stars Mzansi’s very own Masali Baduza (Sephy) and British actor Paterson Joseph, known for his roles in Law & Order: London and Timeless. Noughts + and Crosses tells the story of Sephy and Callum who live in an alternate 21st century Britain. Here, the black ruling class know as Crosses and white people known as the Noughts, live completely separate as centuries of black empowerment in Africa and the subsequent conquering of Europe by the Crosses, lead to racial segregation. But Sephy (a Cross) and Callum (a nought), do everything in their power to keep their relationship alive.

Westworld S3

There is no doubt it feels like we are living in a dystopian world right now, although Margaret Atwood would disagree. (She told The Guardian that “our locked-down world might be an unpleasant, frightening, disagreeable place you don’t want to be”, but it is not dystopian. It’s not a deliberate arrangement”.)

We would have to agree it’s not exactly Westworld. Imagine living in a place where your every desire, no matter how dark, can be fulfilled. That’s exactly what you get in the adult theme park setting of Westworld. This dystopian sci-fi series has won awards across all major categories, including three Emmys in 2018 and four in 2017, while also having been nominated for two Golden Globes. The stellar cast include some of Hollywood’s greatest like Ed Harris, Thandie Newton and Anthony Hopkins. In season three we see how Dolores (played by Evan Rachel Wood) truly comes into her own when she teams up with Caleb (Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul) in neo-Los Angeles.

Lockdown S5

Ah, the irony of watching this prison drama during lockdown … one thing’s for sure, you’ll not be disappointed as this Mzansi original has all the grit, action and drama crammed into one amazing prison series. When season four ended, it left us with many questions, like what’s going to happen now that Masabata has been murdered, how is Deborah going to deal with her rape that resulted in a pregnancy and is the unlikely friendship between MaZet and Tyson all a ruse for something bigger? Well, season five is definitely going to tie up loose ends and even introduces a new character – a disturbed head nurse Palesa played by veteran actor Sophie Lichaba.

Gutsy New Local Telenovela Gomora Thrills Mzansi

he first two episodes of the much-anticipated new local telenovela Gomora has got everyone in a spin. It’s thrilling storyline is pulling everyone in right from the start – and viewers just can’t wait for the next instalment.

Twitter blew up after the first episode, with #Gomora trending at number 1 on Monday – a clear indication of the nation’s need for distraction right now. These are some of the comments: “1st episode stole my heart, lit, ohm my gosh I’m so in love” and “shoooo the content we deserve!! Love it!!” and “#Gomora is going to be FIRE”, to mention just a few. People also loved the local music used, and the fact that Katlego Danke stars.

The series kicks off with the focus on the Ndaba family, consisting of Thathi (played by Katlego), an ultra-rich trophy wife living a life of luxury in Sandton, alongside her bank owner husband Mbongeni (Themba Ndaba) and two bratty, spoilt children Nobuhle (Amamkele Qamate) and Langa (Siyabonga Xaba). They treat their staff with disrespect and each other with disdain. Things are not always as they appear though, and it’s soon revealed that not only is Mbongeni having an affair with his secretary, he’s also been embezzling from the bank.

Meanwhile, the middle-class Dlamini family are living honest, down-to-earth lives with father Melusi (Zolisa Xaluva) being a hard-working, dedicated schoolteacher and mother Gladys (Thembi Seete) a social worker. Son Ntokozo (Ntobeko Sishi) however, is unhappy and feels undervalued and ignored in his own home. He’s also mixing with the wrong crowd, including his girlfriend Mazet (Siphesihle Ndaba) and Bara, a hardened criminal played by a very believable Fortune Thobejane.

Viewers are purposefully thrust into the undeniable contrast between two very different worlds – the wealthy suburbs of Sandton and the hustle and bustle of Alexandra. So close together and yet so very far apart.

Running the criminal underworld of Alex is the calm and cool gangster granny Mam’Sonto (Connie Chiume), but little does she know that in a wonderful plot twist her actions are going to have far-reaching effects on the people she loves the most.

And so set the scene for a collision of these two worlds that will change everyone’s lives forever. One fateful, terrifying night is all it takes ….

There’s one thing for sure – it’s going to keep you glued to your couch every weekday.

You can watch the episodes on DStv Now or watch the series as it airs on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) every weeknight at 19:30.
