DStv Ensures Everyone Has Access To Pan African News

As Africa evolves into a leading continent for growth and sustainability, it’s more important than ever that people have access to news they can trust. This is why DStv is committed to ensuring that all South Africans can view a variety of news channels that provide accurate, timeous reports on what’s happening in the continent and the world around them.

Two of the major steps that have been taken over the past few weeks include the introduction of Africanews on DStv, and the opening of a wide selection of news channels to all South Africans to both subscribers and non-subscribers, to stay up to date with COVID-19 news through the DStv Now streaming platform.

Africanews (part of the Euronews group) which follows on from the introduction of Euronews to DStv in November last year, is focused on providing unbiased global news with an African perspective. Michael Peters, Euronews CEO explains: “Amid the current COVID-19 crisis, Euronews and Africanews’ mission has never been so important: helping people access real-time up-to-date information, empowering them to understand what’s going on in the world by presenting a diversity of viewpoints.”

Africanews is multilingual (broadcasts in French and English) and has a wide network of on-the-ground reporters who cover everything from social and business stories to politics and culture, from a truly African perspective. Its focus is on showcasing the voices that are shaping the future of the continent.

DStv Now has opened up the following news channels to all South Africans: BBC World News; CNN; Sky News; eNCA; SABC News; Newzroom Afrika and Euronews, accessing them is simple – all anyone needs to do is download the DStv Now App. DStv Now can be accessed from your smartphone, tablet, Smart TV or laptop.

Yolisa Phahle, CEO General Entertainment at MultiChoice Group, reinforced the message that MultiChoice Group is firmly committed to providing the best service possible. “In these unprecedented times, the importance of having access to precise, reliable information becomes paramount for our customers and their families”.

Africa’s Greatest Storyteller Ready To Host Mzansi’s Greatest Party

DStv and 1Life are ready to welcome customers, celebrities and celeb-oholics to The Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg for the annual DStv Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards (#DStvMVCA).

Taking place Saturday, 14 March, the awards will see some of Mzansi’s biggest hitmakers take the stage, as DStv and 1Life celebrate the local personalities that made waves over the past year.

According to Simon Camerer, Chief Customer Officer at Multichoice South Africa, DStv relishes opportunities to create platforms for local artists to showcase their talents – and the #DStvMVCA is the ultimate platform to do just that. “South Africa is rich in talent – that’s why we sought to celebrate talent across the board,” he says. “The #DStvMVCA recognises everyone from musicians to sports personalities, DJs to actors – and as the biggest broadcaster in Africa, there is no better brand than DStv to be able to shine a spotlight on that talent.”

As host of the event, Mzansi’s very own style superstar Minnie Dlamini-Jones is looking forward to serving as the glue that brings the show together. “The #DStvMVCA is the only award show of this magnitude that celebrates everyone – musicians, actors, presenters, TV shows, athletes, all the way to ordinary people doing extraordinary things,” she says.

“This year’s show promises to be spectacular with incredible performances for the whole family, and I encourage all to tune in for the biggest celebration of Mzansi’s talent.”

Bringing the best of Africa together

Now in its third year, the #DStvMVCA represents a significant investment by DStv, Africa’s greatest storyteller, and 1Life. According to Thabisa Mkhwanazi, Executive Head of Marketing at Multichoice South Africa, it’s an investment DStv is honoured to make.

“We continue to invest in the #DStvMVCA and recognise our local stars because it enables us to do three things,” Mkhwanazi says. “It affords us the opportunity to listen to our viewers and understand what the enjoy; bring talent on board and celebrate their biggest moments – which were some of the biggest moments on our TV screens that year; and it allows us to fulfil our passion as Africa’s greatest storyteller to move the local entertainment industry forward.”

According to Mkhwanazi, there have been great strides made in recent years to elevate the work of local stars, and that work is key to enabling DStv to tell the best stories in Africa. It is for this reason – to recognise the hard work Mzansi’s local stars are putting in to their crafts – that the #DStvMVCA was launched.

“DStv understands that there is no better recognition for artists than knowing they were celebrated by the people who watched them on TV, listened to them on radio and genuinely engaged with the work they put out,” Mkhwanazi says. “That is the reason we host the #DStvMVCA every year – to recognise to the stars who enable us to produce and broadcast good content for our valuable customers.”

Celebrating the customer

The #DStvMVCA also presents a significant opportunity for DStv to engage with customers. In fact, for the first time ever, the 2020 #DStvMVCA will be attended by thousands of lucky DStv customers who received surprise tickets at absolutely no cost to them. Says Camerer, “We love hearing from our customers and enjoy rewarding them for their ongoing loyalty to us. Similarly, we recognise that the #DStvMVCA is a great platform for our customers to participate in the content we create and share.”

According to Camerer, customer participation in the voting process offers DStv valuable insights that inform the broadcaster’s plans for customer service in the future. “By voting for their favourite personalities, customers are expressing interest in the content they enjoy and the celebrities that resonate with them. This insight is valuable to DStv and the work we do for our customers, and that is why we will continue to reward our loyal customers for their participation,” Camerer says.

Plus, #DStvMVCA is a great opportunity to make good TV, Camerer adds. “Making good TV has always been the core of what we do, and that’s why the #DStvMVCA will be a show like no other – broadcast live on Mzansi Magic and made available to all DStv customers as part of the DStv Now Open Weekend.”

Looking ahead

As Africa’s leading digital entertainment company, Multichoice South Africa is constantly looking at ways to keep its offering fresh and relevant. That’s why, in addition to introducing streaming options for the 2020 #DStvMVCA main event, customers can also stream the red carpet build-up on DStv Now.

“We’ve also introduced brand-new categories and new talent within those categories,” Mkhwanazi says. “Couple that with fresh faces, timeless favourites and epic performances – and we know that this year’s awards show will be unlike anything we’ve hosted before.”

But what is next for one of Mzansi’s premiere awards shows?

Asked whether the #DStvMVCA will be held for years to come, Camerer responds confidently: “I don’t see a reason why not.”

“We love celebrating talent and receiving feedback from customers – and, as of this year, we’ve also broadened our audience to include our loyal customers. It’s a significant investment by DStv but it’s one we’re happy to make because everyone wins, so I look forward to seeing how this event will develop in the years to come,” Camerer concludes.

A celebration like no other, the awards will bring legendary artists such as Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Yvonne Chaka-Chaka and Steve Kekana. Supa Mega, AKA will be setting the stage alight with his hip hop hits, for the Mzansi masses. Viewers can also expect to see hitmakers Jobe London and Mphow69, DJ BigSky, Luude Deejay & Sbhanga. Labantwana Ama Uber hitmakers Semi Tee, Kammu Dee & Miano will also be showcasing their talent on the DMVCA stage. Also on the lineup is Limpopo’s finest star Makhadzi, who continues to inspire many with her success story. The Matorokisi singer will be joined by Master KG. And, no stranger to the local entertainment and music scene, multi award-winning musician and businesswoman DJ Zinhle, will also be performing!

Take The Leap With DStv This February

The good news is there’s one whole extra day of incredible programmes to enjoy on DStv in February this leap year. It’s the month of love, leaps and awards and DStv is ensuring our customers are entertained to the max.

First off, there’s the 92nd Academy Awards which will be aired on M-Net (channel 101) on Monday 10 February at 02:00 for early risers and again at 21:00. Then there’s the 40th Brit Awards, which can be seen on Tuesday 18 February on BBC Brit (channel 120).

But best of all, customers have some exciting new shows to look forward to in February, starting with international crime thriller The Prodigal Son, starring Michael Sheen. If you crave murder and crime in regular doses, this crime-investigation drama can be thought of as Elementary meets Criminal Minds, with a dash of The Blacklist. Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) is an ex-FBI profiler who joins the NYPD after he is relieved of his position (due to some unorthodox albeit brilliant crime-solving). Malcolm is haunted by his past and his parentage – his father is infamous serial killer Dr Martin Whitly aka The Surgeon (Michael Sheen), and Malcom spends his life trying to prove (mostly to himself) that he is nothing like his father.

Then, South Africa’s very own Boity Thulo is debuting her new reality series Boity: Own Your Throne on BET (channel 129) on Wednesday 5 February at 21:30. The Rockville actress and rapper will show viewers how she balances her business, family and spirituality since she accepted the calling to become a sangoma. The show will also introduce Mom Modiehi, her friend Bobby and her manager Bash.

An entire DStv channel (198) is going to be devoted to the first-of-its-kind Nigerian dating show Ultimate Love. If you’re a fan of Love Island, Temptation Island, Big Brother and the like, this is the show that incorporates all the elements from these programmes into one exciting 24/7 reality show. Eight male and eight female carefully chosen contestants are paired according to their attraction to each other and must see their love survive and flourish over eight weeks under the intense scrutiny of the general public. At the end of it all, the winning couple will be rewarded with a lavish traditional wedding, a fully furnished home and other prizes. It’s a social experiment unlike any other. The channel will run from 9 February until 5 April.

Still Breathing is M-Net’s (channel 101) newest local offering, showing once again the channel’s commitment to homegrown entertainment. (Last year’s Trackers was one of the biggest hits of 2019.) Starring well-known actors such as Brandon Auret, Siv Ngesi, Kate Liquorish and Shannon Esra, the show revolves around a group of friends who have lost touch over the years, but are brought together again by tragedy. It’s all about love, friendship, relationships and betrayal, and has been compared to shows such as This is Us and Parenthood, but has a uniquely South African spin. It starts on Thursday 27 February at 20:00.

It’s going to be a February of love, crime, reality, relationships and red carpets on DStv. We have so many moments to share with you, so be sure to be there for the ride.

Springbok World Cup Announcement – Live On DStv

There won’t be a tackle or a sensational try to savour, but the eyes of every rugby fan ought to be on DStv’s SuperSport at 15:00 on Monday, 26 August 2019.

This is because the much-awaited World Cup squad will be announced live on your World of Champions.

For weeks, speculation has mounted as to which players will make up the 31-man squad. The men who carry the hopes of a nation will be paraded for the first time at MultiChoice City where coach Rassie Erasmus and Siya Kolisi, the confirmed leader of the team, will speak of the challenge that awaits.

The Boks will have no easy ride as they seek to emulate the Cup-winning heroes of 1995 and 2007 – their first match at the World Cup will be against defending champions and eternal rivals New Zealand, in Yokohama on September 21.

It is expected to be a full-blooded battle with the winners likely to top the group and the losers sure to have a tougher road to the playoffs.

SuperSport has dedicated a substantial production crew to ensure that Monday’s broadcast goes off without a hitch. Amid the many challenges is securing a stage that can accommodate 4000kg of prime beef, the expected weight of the Bok squad once assembled.

Another is ensuring that the Boks are well fed both before and after the announcement. “They eat constantly, and not a little either,” said one SA Rugby staffer.

As ever with such announcements, the broadcast will include vibrant entertainment with the popular Gwijo squad set to belt out traditional songs, plus singing sensation Sho Madjozi and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Viewers will also be reminded of past glories with an all-action video highlighting many of the Boks’ best moments from previous World Cups.

Popular rugby hosts Motshidisi Mohono and Matthew Pearce will anchor the day’s events, ensuring the Boks get the send-off they deserve ahead of their departure for Japan next Friday. (30 August 2019).

“There are challenges with a live production such as this, but we are well set,” said Sam Sejamoholo, SuperSport’s producer of the show. “There are strict protocols around the Springboks, as you’d expect, but we are looking forward to being part of this momentous event. With a big live audience, rugby fever will be high.”

Monday signals the real countdown to the World Cup with SuperSport shortly rolling out its detailed plans for the tournament. These will include six magazine shows; world-class analysis and all 48 matches live and in High Definition, guaranteeing the very best broadcast package for rugby fans.

Monday’s announcement will be live on SS1, SuperSport Blitz, CSN and Showmax.

For those unable to get to their televisions, it will also be streamed on DStv Now.
