DStv Highlights: 9 – 15 October 2020

Billboard Music Awards, New on KIX, Croctober, Isono, Chasing the Sun

This week, everybody will be “Kung Fu Fighting” with the debut of a new action channel, KIX, on DStv Channel 114. With a wide variety of movies on offer, we selected a few for you to watch. There’s also next-level drama as Isono returns to our screens. For those who prefer a tamer ride, the second episode of Chasing the Sun might be more your speed (after all, we know how it ends). And if you’re craving a concert, the incredible performances at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards will leave you dancing in your living room. Here’s just a taste of what’s in store for the week of 9 to 15 October on DStv

2020 Billboard Music Awards
It’s a hat trick for Kelly Clarkson, who returns to host the rescheduled BBMA’s for an impressive third year. Unsurprisingly, Post Malone leads with 16 nominations and will be performing on the night at  one of the music world’s most entertaining ceremonies of the year while “Good as Hell” singer Lizzo has 12 nominations – not bad for her first time! The performances for this year will certainly make a splash with fan favourites such as BTS, Bad Bunny and En Vogue confirmed. Country crooner Garth Brooks will also be receiving the ninth ever ICON Award. With music greats like Prince, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey in this appropriately-named category, he’s in excellent company.

A new channel dedicated to all things action-packed. From thrillers to classics, here is a selection of action movies that you never knew you needed.

Black Maiden: Chapter A (Horror)
This sequel to Black Maiden: Chapter Q is a perfect late-night thriller to get you in the Spooktober mood. Two girls from different backgrounds are adopted into a wealthy family. But when the family finances take a turn for the worst, they realise they can only keep one of the orphans. With a comfortable life with a loving family in the balance, their sisterly-bond turns dark.

This local telenovela has come back from hiatus and is even more spicy than before. Self-serving Mother Mary and her strait-laced son Gabriel face off after a family secret comes to light. Despite their dysfunctional relationship, breaking away from each other is still a tough decision. Things get even trickier as Abednego returns to Johannesburg. And this time, his violent and criminal skills make him a formidable friend – or a dangerous enemy. With all these plot twists, you’ll want to watch weekly to keep up with all the drama and intrigue.

Chasing the Sun
For many, 2 November 2019 was a day that will live on in their memories for decades to come as the Bokke claimed a remarkable Rugby World Cup win. Chasing the Sun is a five-part documentary series with awe-inspiring interviews from the players and experts. Viewers will also get an all-access pass to footage filmed during the three-year-period. More than just a sports story, the emotional engagement, humour and technical insights will be enjoyed by all South Africans. If you’ve missed the first scintillating episode, it’s available on Catch Up.

This week’s episode follows the unlikely 2018 victory in Wellington, the Springboks face pressure to repeat their exploits and claim the 2019 Rugby Championship title for the first time in a decade. Along the way the team will face controversy and give their all to get the ‘Brighton monkey’ off their back.

Instead, he’ll be grilling celebrities and spicing things up in his very own reality show. His chosen guests are people known for their hot takes, so expect some spicy conversation.

Wian S1
South Africa’s TikTok street magic sensation, Wian Magic (Wian Van Den Berg), is bringing his illusions, magic tricks and pranks to TV again. He’ll be stopping strangers in the street to pull them into his magic tricks as he strives to dazzle, baffle, entertain and amaze. Think Dynamo, think David Blaine – but with South Africa jokes.

Haunted Gingerbread Showdown S2
In each episode, host Clinton Kelly calls on three of the US’s best gingerbread artists to create masterpieces based on a variety of spooky topics. The season starts with a fun episode in which the bakers must create tributes to the horror comedy film Ghostbusters to celebrate its 35th birthday this year.

Curing Alzheimer’s
Along with exploring the history of Alzheimer’s Disease, this in-depth documentary will look at modern developments in spotting the disease early, current treatments as well as progress on work towards prevention. One in four people carries the genetic marker that identifies them as being susceptible to Alzheimer’s, which affects more than 100 million individuals worldwide and leads to crippling healthcare costs in an ageing population. But doctors can now start detecting biological changes that are a hallmark of Alzheimer’s up to 25 years before the disease ravages a patient’s memory and brain function – and there is a focus on developing prevention therapies to slow the course of the condition, too. Given how widespread Alzheimer’s is and how it devastates families, this is definitely worth a watch.

Ben 10 Versus The Universe: The Movie
A giant meteor headed for Earth and only Ben can stop the coming destruction of the planet, so he flies off into space to stop it. However, the meteor is really a spacecraft steered by the villain Vilgax, who’s back for vengeance. And when Ben winds up stranded in space, it’s up to Team Tennyson to team up with Kevin 11 to protect the planet from Vilgax. While they’re hard at work, Ben will have to cross into a parallel dimension called the Null Void to rescue Azmuth, creator of the Omnitrix. But Ben has been mistaken for a villain himself, and there’s a bounty on his head, so he’ll have to work fast to complete his mission and clear his name. He’ll need the help of all his alien allies, so they’d better don that Omni-Naut Armour and prepare for battle. Series fans will see Ben try out a brand-new transformation for the first time, too.

Wednesday, 14 October

Naked And Afraid XL S5
This season’s 12 all-star survivors will be dropped off on the island of Palawan in the Philippines – and challenged to survive 40 days in the wilderness with only their two chosen items to aid them. No clothes, no food, no shelter, no water. They’ll be dropped off in the ocean by boat in teams of three and have to swim for the island, dodging sharks.

Dr. Lauren Thielen (Dr. T) from pet-and-vet series Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER is opening up her own exotic animal practice in her home state of Texas. She’s next door to one of the state’s largest and busiest animal hospitals. Dr. T will be one of 12 specialists called on to treat everything from emus to hedgehogs, lemurs to cockatiels. There’s even a kangaroo. She specialises in the smaller exotic animals, who require the most delicate of handling. “In Florida and Texas, for the most part, the climate is acceptable but they’re also the biggest hubs for exotic animal importation – actually, Texas being huge for that. So I think that’s why we get a lot of it,” explains Dr. T. “I like the little prickly or fuzzy ones – or animals that I can just carry around effortlessly; that’s my type of pet or patient.”

Living The Dream With Somizi S4
Somizi Mhlongo opens his new season with preparations for his wedding to Mohale and getting everyone in his family on-board with the fact that they’ll soon be Mr & Mr. Somizi. The show will take viewers along as he respectfully approaches one of his grandparents to discuss what they would expect in a traditional wedding between two men within the Basotho culture. But it’s not all wedding plans, as consuming as that is. We’ll be partying along with Somizi and his celebrity BFFs like Boity Thulo, Bonang Matheba (looks like they’re back in each other’s good books at last) and his bestie, TT, who’s never afraid to throw some shade. And we’ll be there for the morning after, too, as Somizi emerges groaning with his make-up smeared after a night partying ’til 3 am. On the more serious side, he and Mohale will be adjusting to living together and Somizi will be working on his relationship with his daughter, Bahumi, and grappling with her decision to drop out of university following her mom’s brush with death in a car accident.

DStv Highlights For October 2020

1 October 2020: October is a big month on DStv with tons of scream-worthy Halloween viewing, brand new dramas, special events and movie magic.


October brings two full moons and a host of spooky programming from DStv, including the long-awaited The Walking Dead S10 finale special on FOX (DStv 125), and the ecological comic book horror series Swamp Thing on M-Net City (DStv 115). The Lifetime Channel (DStv 131) dishes up four tales of terror in its creepy October movies about women lured into dangerous relationships.

Halloween-themed movies will be available on the DStv Catch Up service to watch whenever you’re feeling haunted. For the kids, there’s a magical, bewitching new series called The Owl House on Disney Channel (DStv 303), and all the kids’ channels will be running their Halloween-themed episodes of the tinies’ favourite shows on Saturday, 31 October.

Brand new dramas

There are dynamite new dramas including Ethan Hawke’s surprisingly funny Civil War abolitionist tale The Good Lord Bird on M-Net (DStv 101), the revamped Party Of Five if you’re looking for a show that’ll steal your heart and make it bleed on M-Net (DStv 101).

Reality and lifestyle

Reality fans can settle in for Miss Fabulous herself Khanyi Mbau’s intimate new show on BET (DStv 129), E! (DStv 124) will be celebrating Kim Kardashian’s 40th birthday, as well as introducing us to a new reality clan to love with The Bradshaw Bunch.

Talent show fundis can keep an eye out for South African singer Belinda Davids in Britain’s Got Talent S14 on M-Net (DStv 101), and quiz show Pointless returns to BBC Brit (DStv 120), as does Strictly Come Dancing, as we wiggle along to S18.

Caffeine addicts will have a new BFF when they meet Henriëtte Marx in kykNET’s new lifestyle series Netkoffie (DStv 144), adventure junkies will get a new perspective on Africa – especially South Africa, thanks to Instagram celeb World Wide Nate, who now has his own cooking and travel show on Discovery Family (DStv 136), and if you’re looking for old friends, kykNET is bringing back Nataniël in his sneaky lockdown travel and cooking show Toegang. Those looking for only the spiciest local flavours can give Phat Joe’s new celeb chow down on Cheeky Palate a shot on 1Magic (DStv 103). And if you’re just looking for relaxing chat and music, Kelly Clarkson is back with a second season of her talk show on M-Net (DStv 101).

True Crime

True crime buffs, prepare to feast like Tiger Kings as Investigation Discovery (DStv 171) brings us a brand-new Tiger King series and a documentary special. Documentary fans can also look forward to the inspiring Chasing The Sun series on M-Net (DStv 101) that takes us inside the SA Rugby Team’s 2019 World Cup victory in Japan and shows us how their teamwork made the dream work. Samuel L Jackson’s brilliant and heart-wrenching exploration of the Transatlantic slave trade takes the spotlight on 1Magic (DStv 103). And the History channel (DStv 186) is coming up Trumps in the run-up to the US Presidential election on Tuesday, 3 November as it delves into the background of the current President, examines The US’s political divisions, and takes us inside a White House special project and Air Force One itself. It’s World Animal Day on Sunday, 4 October, and National Geographic Wild (DStv 182) will be celebrating with a whole day of animal-centric specials, along with dedicating the entire month to one extra-scary animal in particular: the crocodile. Welcome to Croctober, fans!

Vula Vala S1

Ever wonder what happens to your favourite sports stars after they retire? Then you will certainly enjoy this new drama series! Sello Maake ka-Ncube returns to the screens as Bra Rex, a retired soccer player with a new goal – to become a successful football-club owner himself. When an aspiring soccer player decides to move to Johannesburg, it seems that everything is working in his favour when he joins The Warriors. However, it seems that fate has a cruel sense of humour when an old secret is revealed that could take away his dreams. Filled with family secrets, soccer dreams and crime bosses, is #goals on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161).

Miss SA!

Finally we’ll be welcoming a brand-new Miss SA on M-Net (DStv 101) and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) on Sunday, 24 October.

All The DStv Shows To Look Forward To In May 2020

There will be no slowing down when it comes to entertainment on DStv in May. In fact, it’s going to be one of the most exciting months of the year in terms of new series and seasons. Here are just a few of the highlights that DStv customers across the spectrum of packages can look forward to.

DStv Premium

When it comes to international series, M-Net (101) is on fire this month. Brand new shows include Shrill, about a curvy young journalist trying to increase her self-worth despite what society has to say about her weight; Carol’s Second Act, starring the ever-hilarious Patricia Heaton as a 50-year-old medical intern; The Plot Against America starring Winona Ryder in an almost-true-to-life story about a celebrity-turned-president (sound familiar?) whose woeful ways capture the imagination and votes of the masses and On Becoming a God in Central Florida, which has been called “the best TV series of the year” and stars Kirsten Dunst as a working class mom who claws her way up the pyramid scheme that left her family broke. Then there’s tear-jerking family drama Council of Dads, which has been compared to This is Us, and is about a dying father who enlists his best friends to look after his family.

Returning favourites include Hawaii 5-0 S10 and the second season of Magnum PI.

My Brilliant Friend was a massive hit last year and now the series about Italian friends Elena and Lila returns for a second season. Cult-hit American Horror Story’s new season is called 1984 and the action takes place in a summer camp. There are also new seasons of the highly regarded A Million Little Things and Tell Me A Story.

BBC First (119) has some great series on its line-up, including White House Farm, a six-part drama about one of Britain’s most notorious murder cases – a family of five all shot to death on their estate in Essex. The second season of Liar promises more secrets and drama, as the mystery deepens.

On the documentary side, BBC Earth (184) brings Easy Ways to Live Well with celebrity chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (River Cottage) and Steph McGovern (BBC Breakfast) who test the latest health hacks. Anomaly: The Bermuda Triangle in Space looks at a possible Bermuda Triangle in Earth’s orbit. Tigers: Hunting the Traffickers is a fascinating and saddening under cover look at the cruel confinement and butchery of tigers in South East Asia. The absolutely fabulous Joanna Lumley returns with another travel show, Hidden Caribbean: Havana to Haiti where she finds secret gems in unlikely places.

The Sunday night M-Net movies this month include Stuber, an action-comedy starring Dave Bautista that sees an Uber driver and a cop team up to solve a crime. POMS is a heart-warming comedy about two women in a retirement home who start a cheerleading squad and stars Diane Keaton. The highly rated Us, starring Lupita Nyong’o, is a horror directed by Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele. Cold Blood sees French hitman Jean Reno (Leon: The Professional) return to our screens as Henry, a recluse murder-for-hire gunman. John Wick 3 features Keanu Reeves once again as a reluctant hitman. This time around John is declared excommunicated and fair game for bounty hunters.

For the kids, Nick Jr (307) brings Rusty Rivets, to inspire those with an interest in science, technology, engineering and maths through the accomplishments of two young inventors.

The Adventures of Paddington is an animated show about the Peruvian bear, perfect for four-year-olds and up.

DStv Compact Plus

1Magic (103) sees the start of Guess Who? This local drama tells the story of family, life, love and everything in between. And speaking of love, The Oprah Winfrey Network brings you Love & Marriage: Huntsville S1, a reality TV series that’s going to serve straight up realness. Three high-powered black American couples come together to help the thriving city of Huntsville Atlanta. Then there’s Power S6 about wealthy nightclub owner James “Ghost” St. Patrick who secretly runs a drug operation. Reality show Growing Up Hip Hop S2 looks at the next generation of hip-hop royalty. Are they now ready to step out of the shadow of their parents?

Lovers of true-life stories are in for a real treat with the Lifetime (131) line-up this month. Movies include The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, the story of the highest-selling gospel group of all time; When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely Story about a 16-year-old teen mom who falls in with the wrong company; and Bobbi Kristina, about the tragic life of Whitney Houston’s daughter.

HISTORY (186) brings some riveting documentaries to life, including America on Fire, focusing on the American militia movement, Lost Relics of the Knights of the Templar, which attempts to establish a link between some old relics and the mythical Knights, D-Day: The Untold Stories about the key events of the Allied invasion of Nazi-held Europe and Alone: The Beast, a survival series showcasing three strangers attempting to survive for 30 days in the wilderness.

More documentaries are in store for true crime fans, who will be obsessed with the new season of The Real Prime Suspect and Murder for My Man on CBS Justice (170)which focuses onstories about women who would do anything to please their men ­– even murder.

Reality sees brand-new series The Funny Dance Show make its debut on E! Entertainment (124). Two teams of comedians compete in a series of comedic dance-offs each week. Total Bellas S5 again focuses on life and love outside the wrestling ring. Comedy Central (122) sees the start of sketch show Alternatino with Arturo Castro S1, focusing on Latino people living in America.

Hey Duggee on CBeebies (306) is a preschool series perfect for children and parents to watch together as it can lead to important conversations about experiences that youngsters might encounter on a daily basis. Dogs Loves Books is an adorable new cartoon that tells the story of Dog who loves books, loves reading them and loves collecting them. Nickelodeon (305) features SpongeBob SquarePants Best Escape Ever Marathon, as well as the Kids’ Day Marathon, a special day for children everywhere that will have them spoilt for choice with a day dedicated to their favourite Nickelodeon shows.

DStv Compact

The superhero universe is alive on M-Net City (115) this month. Favourites Supergirl and The Flash, and new series Batwoman started at the end of April and joining them in May is Arrow, who returns for an eighth and final season. Also on M-Net City is the second season of Charmed, in which Mal, Macy and Maggie must use their magic powers to ward off monsters and demons.

Mzansi Magic (161) boasts its usual line-up of local series, and adding to the list are a collection of local movies, which will be screened every Saturday night. Viewers can look forward to movies such as Uyangenza, Umlingisi and Monate Mpolaye.

There’s also plenty of movie action on Studio Universal (112). Offerings include Bulletproof Monk, about a monk chosen to protect a secret scroll, and Blood Brother, about a man who was arrested 15 years ago and is now seeking revenge on his friends who set him up.

On National Geographic (181), documentaries include Stonehenge Decoded: Update which looks at new theories on who actually built the ancient monument;  Airport Security: Peru & Brazil which focuses specifically on drug smugglers in these regions, Heroes of the Sky: The Real Mighty Eighth which examines the Eighth Air Force and the role it played in bombing Germany during World War II; Saving Notre Dame, which takes a look at the rebuilding of the iconic French church; and X-Ray Earth S1, which uses new technology to reveal incredible information about our planet.

Stacey Dooley may have won the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing, but she’s better known for her real job as a hard-hitting journalist who always asks the right questions. This month you can see her on BBC Brit in Stacey Dooley: Bounty Hunters; Stacey Dooley: Face to Face With Arms Dealers; Stacey Dooley: Isis Brides and Stacey Dooley: Inside Spain’s Narcos War.

Moja Love’s (157) got some more local programming to love in May, starting with season 4of Ufelani. Settle in for more South African true-crime stories in the new season of this heart-breaking docu-drama series.There’s also No Excuses Pay Papgeld S5 in whichDr Malinga is once again hot on the trail of deadbeat dads who have ducked and dived when it comes to paying child maintenance.

On the series front, the brand-new crime-buster series Deputy starts on Universal (177). When the busy Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department loses their beloved sheriff, a fifth-generation lawman Bill Hollister (Dorff) takes over the reins. But Bill soon find he has to deal with more than just crime.

New reality series include Fish or Die on Discovery Family (136), followingfour friends who venture into some of the most remote and dangerous places on Earth to go fishing.

Myne vir Joune is abrand-new Afrikaans reality series on VIA (147), that will see two members from two different South African families suddenly find themselves in each other’s homes! There’s also a second season of Afrikaans foodie magazine show Klankbord, also on VIA.

The children are going to love the new shows on NickToons (308). There’s Kingdom Force which will have pre-schoolers everywhere literally jumping for joy as they watch this brand-new animation series. Then there’s  ALVINNN!!! And the Chipmunks S2 and Danny Phantom S3.

DStv Access

MTV Base (322) will keep the party going this May with Gqom Fridays, featuring thehottest Gqom tracks from the biggest artists. Then, on Saturdays, there’s Breakfast Bangers, in which the hottest music playlists are curated just for you.

Reality will see a very special season of 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined S1 on TLC (135). This five-episode spin-off will feature over 40 people who’ve formerly appeared on the show, updating viewers on their lives as they stay at home during the Covid-19 pandemic through self-shot footage and remote camera interviews.

There’s also another season of Judge Judy on CBS Reality (132). The much-loved and feared retired Manhattan family court judge will preside over even more eye-popping cases. Also on CBS Reality is a fresh season of Border Security, which sees airport customs officers take on some of the world’s most innovative smugglers.

On the documentary side, National Geographic Wild (182) presents Women of Wild. Every  Wednesday evening will be dedicated to focusing on the strong, resilient, independent, highly-professional and compassionate women who care for the wild.

History of Africa S2 sees presenter Zeinab Badawi return for a second season of her breath-taking exploration of the African continent on BBC World News (400).

DStv continues to bring their subscribers the best in local entertainment and international programming to make staying home during the nationwide lockdown a lot more bearable. Compact viewers can now enjoy exciting shows like local celeb wedding extravaganza with Somhale’s The Union on Mzansi Magic, not to mention the addition of the home of pop culture, E!
