DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards Make SA Entertainment History

The people have spoken!

History was officially made tonight at the inaugural DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards. Over 1 million votes were cast for 50 nominees in 10 categories, as South Africa made her voice heard. Tonight’s glittering gala evening was the culmination of a legendary battle worthy of Mzansi’s entertainment history, as fans put their thumbs through the wringer voting for their favourites in the inaugural DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards.

The red carpet at the Sandton International Convention Centre was ruled by ladies in alluring gowns and men in elegant suits, as fans cheered their favourites in an unparalleled fashion and glamour frenzy. Thespians, musicians, sports personalities and comedians were among those who put their best foot forward to be part of entertainment history in the making.

Bonang “Yo Girl B!” Matheba was beguiling as the evening’s MC, as she hosted guests and viewers in flawless style and boasting impeccable fashion. If this was a Night of the Stars, then Matheba was the brightest of all.

The DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards was beamed live to millions of households via Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161). The show lit up all social media platforms and left the live audience at the ICC and those watching from the small screen in awe, as a parade of Mzansi’s finest entertainment talent walked off the stage clutching the coveted black and gold statuette.

Legendary jazz maestro, Hugh Masekela, was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award handed to him by M-Net CEO, Yolisa Phahle.

However, the night was not just about the who’s who of the entertainment industry. Anna Dithane walked off with R50 000 after being named the 1Life Life Changer for uplifting her community, proudly presented by 1Life Direct. Another R50 000 went to Eugene Dithane, who nominated his community warrior mother.

Viewers who voted also got a slice of the cake when one was rewarded with a brand-new Kia Picanto worth R150 000 after being randomly selected via an audited process. Another lucky voter found themselves with a R100 000 Vodacom World Shopping Experience after predicting the Song of the Year. It sure is rewarding to a DStv Mzansi viewer, neh!

The top-notch entertainment was befitting a celebration of this magnitude. The ICC auditorium was transformed into a laser-and-tribal print cavern, with the stage hosting – among others – the likes of Lady Zamar, social media dance maven Zodwa Wabantu, the majestic Thandiswa Mazwai, Lion of Judah power voice Lebo Sekgobela and the beautiful ratchetness of Gqom, led by seasoned industry pros DJ Cleo, Winnie Khumalo and Busiswa. Surprise special guest, Tshedi Mholi, made a throwback appearance wearing a ravishing and heavily-embellished fuchsia gown with a train worthy of bodyguards. Her stage partner Cassper Nyovest certainly “gave it away” on stage, and had the audience going wild. It was a sight to behold!

The charismatic gap-toothed Thembisa Mdoda was the belle of the ball as she scooped the gong not only for the Favourite Presenter category, but also the Ultimate Viewers’ Choice Award. It was the perfect ending to a perfect night!

Make Your Home The Place To Be This Holiday With DStv

MultiChoice is opening up the Premium kiddies’ channels to its Compact customers from Thursday, 29 June until Thursday, 13 July, just in time for the school holidays. DStv Compact customers will get a first view of the Premium kids channels, namely Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Nick Jnr.

“Kids will not have a single reason to complain of boredom this winter holiday. School’s out, so little ones can have friends over, snuggle up and get cosy with DStv and the selection of great content available on these Premium channels. The winter season also gives families the perfect opportunity to stay warm indoors and spend quality time with loved ones while enjoying this special treat,” says Aletta Alberts, MultiChoice Head of Content.

Disney’s classic cartoons, popular animated characters, live action sitcoms and unrivalled range of classic Disney feature films will keep the whole family entertained; while Nickelodeon’s “Kids First” focus with their signature fun and exciting shows will be enjoyed by pre-schoolers, tweens, kids, teens and parents alike.

Nick Jr. is the go-to channel in households where two to six year olds roam. The content is entertaining enough to keep young children occupied, while parents can rest assured that the viewing experience will be one of learning.

Some of the highlights for DStv Compact customers

For three weeks in July, Nickelodeon (DStv channel 305) is offering weekday marathons packed with special episodes and a brand new series! Let the kids fly away with superheroes The Thundermans and Henry Danger, get technical with the internet gurus and gamers from Game Shakers and iCarly, go on a family adventure in Hunter Street and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, and laugh out loud with animated series, The Loud House and Bunsen Is a Beast. Plus, check out the new addition, ToonMarty.

A great big dollop of comedy and a generous pinch of slapstick make Nickelodeon’s new animated series an entertaining hit. Marty is a wacky boy with quite a large head, who works at the Toonmart in Toonville with his friends Burnie and Holly. And there’s no business Marty likes better than somebody else’s business, which often lands the trio in hot water! Watch as they clean up their mess after their pranks go wrong. ToonMarty will premiere on Monday, 5 July.

Nick Jr.’s (DStv channel 307) new episodes of Nella The Princess Knight air daily from Saturday, 1 July. In this season, Nella uses her position as a princess-knight to be a guardian for justice – when she’s not practising for her ballet recital or playing with Trinket, her unicorn best friend! In the new episodes, the girls are excited because there’s a celebrity visiting Castlehaven. Trinket has to overcome her jealousy of Nella’s new friendship with Minotauri and a near-sighted cyclops interrupts Nella’s ballet class.

Team Umizoomi: The King of Numbers is a movie where preschoolers are tested on their basic counting and recognition of shapes and patterns. In this special, the siblings Milli and Geo, and their green robot friend Bot, have to use all their maths skills to save a king.

On Disney Channel (DStv Channel 303), inventor and mediator Harley Diaz manoeuvers through the bustle that results from being part of a big happy family, from the unique vantage point of being a tween middle child. Join her for a whole new host of adventures in the premiere of Stuck in the Middle Yr2 on Monday, 3 July at 17:05, launching with the special Stuck in the Waterpark!

You can also catch familiar favourites like Elena of Avalor – a magical tale of adventure, following Elena in her journey to become a brave, resilient and compassionate queen; Bizaardvark, where Frankie and Paige, the quirky, 13-year-old best friends write funny songs and create music videos for their online channel, Bizaardvark; and Girl Meets World where life’s an adventure, and Riley Matthews’ is about to begin! This bright-eyed 7th grader and her quick-witted BFF, Maya, navigate the ups and downs of teenage life and take on the world, just as Riley’s parents once did; and so much more.

The channels will automatically be added, but if you can’t find it, make sure you are on all channels not favourite channels.

DStv Premium, Extra and Compact customers can also catch the best kids’ entertainment on-the-go on DStv Catch Up or through live streaming on DStv Now.

But having fun with Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. doesn’t have to end when the school holidays do. Upgrade to DStv Premium by checking out and keep the entertainment going!

“In the ever-changing world of television, binge has become a worldwide phenomenon. M-Net Binge has deliberately been placed next to the time-delayed M-Net Plus 1 on channel 901, which is another channel that was created for the convenience of DStv Premium viewers. “This means that our viewers can clearly distinguish between channels built around fresh content like M-Net 101, with its extended prime-time that runs between 06:00pm to midnight and channels that speak to viewer convenience,” explains Phahle.

DStv Premium customers will be able to set their M-Net Binge recordings as soon as the EPG becomes available, which is usually eight days before the day of broadcast. Customers can choose to either record the entire series to compile your own box set or record individual episodes.

DStv’s M-Net Channels Get A Refresh

DStv customers have spoken… and MultiChoice and M-Net took note. DStv Premium customers can soon look forward to more fresh series with fewer movies and series repeats from M-Net.

MultiChoice and M-Net will be making key changes to some of the M-Net channels to improve DStv customers’ viewing experience.

Supersized M-Net 101

The ever-popular M-Net Edge (channel 102) will be integrated into M-Net 101 from 1 April 2017. This will give customers a supersized channel with bumper-to-bumper entertainment ranging from the latest shows from M-Net 101 to the edgier entertainment previously on M-Net Edge. Customers can look forward to an extended prime time on M-Net 101 from 18:00 to midnight every day. This means fewer repeats on M-Net, which will now be the one destination for the best and newest shows from the US, alongside some great local shows.

Customers can tune in to sitcom fun at 18:00, followed by the latest blockbuster international reality shows at 18:30 and top-notch drama, crime, comedy or action series from 19:30 onwards. Once the kids are safely in bed – between 21:30 and midnight – customers can enjoy critically acclaimed edgier entertainment like Billions season 2, Magicians season 2; The Leftovers season 3, Bates Motel season 5, Broadchurch season 3, Mad Dogs season 1, Detour season 2 and more.

To top it off, M-Net will pull out all the stops to give our customers great entertainment on Saturdays. The reality show repeats will be dropped on Saturdays and Sundays, in favour of fresh sitcoms and dramas which will air on Saturdays from 18:00. Brand new series like cutting-edge medical drama Pure Genius(Augustus Prew, Dermot Mulroney, and Odette Annable), dark comedy Imposters (Inbar Lavi, Parker Young and Stephen Bishop) and the epic event limited series When We Rise (Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker and Rachel Griffiths) can be seen during prime time on Saturdays.

“The entertainment landscape is changing faster than ever – we’ve made these changes based on what our customers have told us. We know they want to see the best new and returning series, and that is exactly what they will get,” says Group General Manager for M-Net SA, Nkateko Mabaso.

More fresh movies more often

M-Net want to show fewer older movies and repeats so DStv customers can enjoy more fresh and newer movies more often. This is why M-Net Movies Showcase (channel 107) will be dropped in favour of more themed movie pop-up channels and movie festivals on existing M-Net movie channels.

“Our pop-up channels are extremely popular,” says Mabaso. “Viewers love the fact that they can easily find a collection of their favourite movies packaged under a specific theme on one channel. They enjoyed the Star Wars and Harry Potter pop-up channels – and we’re planning several more throughout the year.”

The recently launched M-Net Movies Collection also adds to the breadth of M-Net’s movie offering. The M-Net Movies Collection comprise more than 1000 movies and is available on DStv Catch Up Plus, accessible to customers when they connect their DStv Explora to the internet. The collection is also accessible on the Catch Up section on DStv Now online and on the app. DStv Premium customers can choose what movie they would like to watch, when it suits them best.

DStv Family customers gets VUZU

There is also good news about fewer repeats for DStv Family customers. From April, VUZU (channel 116) will move into their family of channels. VUZU will replace M-Net Family (channel 162) which has not performed as well as expected. VUZU carries many of the popular family and celebrity reality shows that our DStv Family customers enjoy.

Reset your recordings

Leading up to the integration of M-Net Edge and M-Net 101, DStv Premium customers can enjoy two, three or four back-to-back episodes of their favourite shows in the next couple of weeks.

Customers with Exploras and PVRs are reminded to reset their recordings as their favourite shows find their new home on M-Net 101. These shows include Elementary, Major Crimes and Grimm, as well as Express from the US shows Crashing, Girls, Homeland, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Lucifer.Remember to also keep an eye on the Catch Up calendar available on
