Daisy Ridley To Narrate Upcoming IMAX Educational Film Asteroid Hunters

IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) announced in February that Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) will narrate the latest IMAX® educational film, Asteroid Hunters, a fascinating look at asteroids, their cosmic origins and the potential threat they pose to our world. The film will be released in select IMAX® and IMAX® 3D theatres starting April 17, 2020.

Written and produced by Phil Groves, produced by Jini Durr and directed by W.D. Hogan, Asteroid Hunters introduces asteroid scientists – the best line of defense between Earth and an asteroid’s destructive path – and reveals the cutting-edge tools and techniques they use to detect and track asteroids, and the technology that may one day protect our planet. The effects of an asteroid impact could be catastrophic and while the current probability of an event in our lifetime is low, the potential consequences make the study of asteroids an incredibly important area of scientific research. Witness the latest in planetary defense and how science, ingenuity and determination combine to explore the world’s most preventable natural disaster.

“I am so very excited to work with IMAX to continue transporting audiences into space,” said Daisy Ridley. “Asteroid Hunters showcases the brilliant minds of scientists and true planetary defenders working to protect our world and reminding us what our people are capable of when united by a common goal.”

Megan Colligan, President of IMAX Entertainment and Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp., added, “We’re thrilled to have the very talented Daisy Ridley join the IMAX family as the voice of Asteroid Hunters. The IMAX experience is unmatched when it comes to space exploration and we’re delighted to deliver another top-quality presentation to educate our audiences about the fascinating science behind asteroid detection and prevention.”

“Asteroid Hunters has been a real passion project for me and I am so happy to be working with IMAX to bring this very important topic to the forefront,” said producer/writer Phil Groves. “IMAX offers an immersive experience like no other and to have someone of Daisy Ridley’s caliber to help share our message is truly special.”

Asteroid Hunters was filmed using IMAX® cameras and mixed in immersive IMAX 12.0 channel sound. Utilizing awe-inspiring images and heart-pounding audio for a fully immersive experience, IMAX’s Asteroid Hunters will engage audiences with the exploration of our solar system and educate how science, knowledge, and communication can be powerful enough to save the planet.

Apocalypse Now: Final Cut – To Release In IMAX Theatres Nationwide 23 August 2019

Francis Ford Coppola’s exhilarating masterpiece returns to the big screen in all its cinematic glory with a striking brand-new 4K, Dolby Atmos©, Dolby Vision© version

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Oscar-winning Vietnam cult war epic this summer, Gravel Road Distribution Group will release a special, never-before-seen cut, restored with breathtaking realism by Coppola himself, to the highest and finest audio and visual standards, for a truly visceral cinematic experience.

Forty years after its original release, South African audiences will get the chance to experience Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, a never-before-seen and newly restored cut of Coppola’s spectacular cinematic masterpiece in a way which the director believes “looks better than it has ever looked and sounds better than it has ever sounded”. Coppola said that he is “thrilled beyond measure to present the best version of the film to the world.” It will release in all seven (7) IMAX theatres in Gauteng, the Western Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal, from 23 – 29 August 2019.

Restored from the original negative for the first time ever, Apocalypse Now: Final Cut is Coppola’s most complete version of his multi-awarded classic, a haunting journey into madness that fascinated generations of movie lovers and now feels even more monumentally alive than ever before. Ranked as one of the best films of all times, the film stars Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, Albert Hall, Laurence Fishburne, Harrison Ford, G.D. Spradlin, Dennis Hopper, Sam Bottoms and Frederic Forrest.

Apocalypse Now was nominated for 8 Academy Awards® (including Best Picture) and won 2 Academy Awards® for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, 2 BAFTAs for Best Direction and Best Best Supporting Actor and the Palme d’Or in Cannes. Starring Academy Award winner Marlon Brando (1972, Best Actor, The Godfather), Academy Award winner Robert Duvall (1983, Best Actor, Tender Mercies), Golden Globewinner Martin Sheen (2001, Best Actor – TV Series, “The West Wing”), Academy Award nominee Dennis Hopper (1986, Best Supporting Actor, Hoosiers), Academy Award nominee Laurence Fishburne (1993, Best Actor, What’s Love Got to Do with it), and Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford (1985, Best Actor, Witness).

The film follows Army Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a troubled man sent on a dangerous and mesmerizing odyssey into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade American colonel named Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has succumbed to the horrors of war and barricaded himself in a remote outpost.

The best visual and sound technologies have been used to present Coppola’s true vision of the film: one that delivers deep, visceral visual and auditory impact. “The audience will be able to see, hear and feel this film how I always hoped it could be—from the first ‘bang’ to the final whimper” said Coppola.

This is the first time the original negative has ever been scanned and over 11 months and 2,700 hours were spent on cleaning and restoring the film’s 300,173 frames. The Apocalypse Now: Final Cut restoration has been brought to life through ultra-vivid picture quality with Dolby Vision®, delivering spectacular colours never before seen on a screen, with highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker.

Apocalypse Now Final Cut has been mixed in Dolby Atmos® to offer a truly immersive sound experience and it has been enhanced Meyer Sound Laboratories’ newly developed Sensual SoundTM, a technology engineered to output audio below the limits of human hearing.

The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on 28th April 2019 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in the following IMAX theatres, in South Africa on 23 August 2019: Bay West, Cape Gate, Cradlestone Mall, Eastgate, Gateway, the Grove and Mall of Africa.

Apocalypse Now is a retelling of Joseph Conrad’s short classic Heart of Darkness, set in 1969 during the Vietnam War. The story traces the journey of a special forces captain (Willard) through the violent combat zones of Vietnam on a secret assignment to terminate the life of a field commander called Kurtz, who has set up a ruthless dictatorship. As Willard travels through the insanity and absurdities of the American involvement in the war, he is more and more drawn to the jungle itself, its primeval mystique and immense power…

The Terror Looms Large As New Line CInema’s “IT” Opens Globally In Imax® Day-And-Date With Conventional Theatres

Warner Bros. Pictures announced last night that New Line Cinema’s highly anticipated horror thriller “IT” will open in domestic and select international IMAX® theatres day-and-date with its wide theatrical release, starting with the earliest international markets on Wednesday, September 6, and in North America with Thursday night previews on September 7.  In South Africa, the film will release in cinemas and IMAX on 15 September.

In IMAX theatres around the globe, horror fans can be immersed in the terrifying world of one of Stephen King’s most popular novels—brought to the big screen for the first time by director Andy Muschietti.

Locally, tickets for early screenings in IMAX on the 9th September are now available for advance purchase at

New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “IT” tells the story of seven young outcasts growing up in the township of Derry, Maine, who call themselves the Losers’ Club.  Each of them has been ostracized for one reason or another; each has a target on their back from the local pack of bullies…and all have seen their inner fears come to life in the form of an ancient shape shifting predator they can only call It.

For as long as their town has existed, Derry has been the entity’s hunting ground, emerging from the sewers every 27 years to feed on the terrors of its chosen prey: Derry’s children.  Banding together over one horrifying and exhilarating summer, the Losers form a close bond to help them overcome their own fears and stop a killing cycle that began on a rainy day, with a small boy chasing a paper boat as it swept down a storm drain…and into the hands of Pennywise the Clown.

Directed by Andy Muschietti (“Mama”), “IT” is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades.  First published in 1986, IT became an instant classic.  It continues to be counted among the best and most influential works of the undisputed literary master of horror, inspiring numerous film and television projects in the years that have followed.

The film stars Bill Skarsgård (“Allegiant,” TV’s “Hemlock Grove”) as the story’s central villain, Pennywise.  An ensemble of young actors also star in the film, including Jaeden Lieberher (“Midnight Special”), Jeremy Ray Taylor (“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”), Sophia Lillis (“37”), Finn Wolfhard (TV’s “Stranger Things”), Wyatt Oleff (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Chosen Jacobs (upcoming “Cops and Robbers”), Jack Dylan Grazer (“Tales of Halloween”), Nicholas Hamilton (“Captain Fantastic”) and Jackson Robert Scott, making his film debut.

Muschietti directed “IT” from a screenplay by Chase Palmer & Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman, based on the novel by King.  Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg and Barbara Muschietti produced the film, with Dave Neustadter, Walter Hamada, Richard Brener, Toby Emmerich, Marty P. Ewing, Doug Davison, Jon Silk and Niija Kuykendall serving as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Chung-Hoon Chung (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “Oldboy”), production designer Claude Paré (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), editor Jason Ballantine (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), and costume designer Janie Bryant (TV’s “Mad Men”).  The music was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch (“Annabelle: Creation”).

New Line Cinema presents a Vertigo Entertainment/Lin Pictures/Katzsmith Production, “IT.”  The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
