Solo: A Star Wars Story – Ticket Sales Now Open

MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU!

Bookings for Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated in-cinema release of Solo: A Star Wars Story are now open

Star Wars: Force for Change to Donate Up To $1 Million to Support UNICEF

May 4th is a day Star Wars fans have chosen to celebrate and honour all-things-Star-Wars, be it by posting Star Wars related content to social media, hosting Star Wars screening parties, wearing Star Wars costumes and clothing, or shopping for Star Wars merchandise. Why May 4th? Because, as it happens, fans invented a clever turn of phrase based on the classic Star Wars slogan “May the Force Be With You” back in 1978: “May the FOURTH Be With You”. While originally invoked among US fans as a Fourth of July greeting, it was reset to May 4th the following year when a full-page ad appeared in the May 4, 1979 issue of The London Evening News to congratulate British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on her taking office that day: “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”

Since then, and especially in recent years, Star Wars fans have claimed May 4th as their day, a day that has also given Lucasfilm an opportunity to give back to the Star Wars community that honours that galaxy far, far away. This year, in the name of Star Wars: Force for Change – an initiative that inspires people to make a positive impact on the world – Lucasfilm and Disney will be giving back wherever they can, and we encourage fans to do the same.

Since 2012, Lucasfilm has encouraged May the 4th activities through its official website and social channels as well as provided built-in discounts and special offers on Star Wars merchandise. And since “May the 4th Be With You” doesn’t carry the same witty punch when translated into other languages, “Star Wars Day” has been adopted to establish a global meaning for this annual worldwide celebration.

#RoarForChange

Lucasfilm and Star Wars: Force for Change have announced Roar For Change, a global challenge in support of UNICEF. The initiative invites fans and families to share their own version of Chewbacca’s iconic roar. For each public post, like, or share on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that includes #RoarForChange between May 3 – 25, 2018, Star Wars: Force for Change U.S. will donate $1 to UNICEF, up to $1 million. Funds will be used to support UNICEF’s lifesaving work for children around the world.

“Every year, May 4th has seen fans across the globe become Forces for Change and rally around good causes,” says Paul Gainer, Head of Disney Consumer Products Commercialization. “This year, as part of the countdown to the launch of Solo: A Star Wars Story, we’re giving them a fun way to support UNICEF while celebrating Han’s legendary sidekick Chewbacca, and his iconic roar, which is almost as recognizable as the Wookiee warrior himself.”

Fans can share their best Chewbacca impersonation, don Hasbro’s Electronic Chewbacca mask, or create a Dubsmash using one of Chewbacca’s best-known roars from the Star Wars saga, which will be hosted on the app’s homepage for the duration of the campaign.

The initiative kicked off with a video featuring the cast of Solo: A Star Wars Story, revealing Chewbacca’s diva behavior on the set of the new movie, which hits theaters on May 25.

“Chewbacca may not always have the best temperament but beneath the gruff exterior is a heart of gold,” says director Ron Howard in the launch video. “That’s why he’s challenging you to Roar for Change.”

Partners from across the Star Wars galaxy have joined forces to celebrate the initiative. LEGO is taking to the streets of New York with the first-ever Brick Millennium Falcon pedicab to promote Roar for Change and give fans the chance to roar alongside Chewbacca himself in Bryant Park on May 4. Hasbro and Funko each met the challenge to Roar for Change and created celebratory
videos to help unlock the donation to UNICEF.

Star Wars: Force for Change, a charitable initiative from Lucasfilm and Disney, harnesses the strength of Star Wars to empower and improve the lives of children around the world. Since 2014 when it was inspired by Star Wars fans, Star Wars: Force for Change has raised over $16 million to date for charitable causes around the world.

Nearly one in four children worldwide are severely malnourished. UNICEF is working in 190 countries and territories to defend children’s rights and, among other issues, help address malnutrition. On behalf of Star Wars: Force for Change, funds unlocked through this campaign will help UNICEF to provide Ready-to-Use-Therapeutic Food packets to children suffering from malnutrition, helping them to have a chance at a brighter future.

“We are thrilled to team up with Star Wars: Force for Change and Chewbacca to help improve the lives of malnourished children around the world. It’s incredible to see Star Wars fans rally around the spirit of Chewbacca and UNICEF’s lifesaving mission. Together, we can protect all that is good in a galaxy not so far away,” said Rajesh Anandan, Senior Vice President of UNICEF Ventures, UNICEF USA.

South Africa now boasts six 4DX cinemas nationwide, exclusive to Nu Metro. The release of the sequel – STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – promises to take cinemagoers on a movie experience like no other with the next-generation 4DX format.

Nu Metro’s 4DX has expanded at a rapid pace across South Africa, and is now also supported by the world’s top film-producing studios. It is considered as a respected format, which significantly enhances the cinema experience and literally makes moviegoers a part of the Big Screen-action.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Scene Xtreme) : Review

#GoRogueSA

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a step away from the main series in this epic tale, with the first stand-alone film. The story for Rogue One follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones – The Theory of Everything) as she joins The Rebellion on a risky mission to steal the plans for The Empires awesome new weapon. This weapon is a space station, capable of destroying an entire planet, is known as the Death Star. Set shortly before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, the film is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy, from a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta.

Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso

This key event in the Star Wars timeline, going after the Empire’s ultimate weapon, brings ordinary people together in a disparate group, to fight for the freedom of all in the galaxy. As with the general plots of any other Star Wars storyline, Rogue One is a textbook example of the hero’s journey. From her background and family, to the decisions she makes and the amazing feats she embarks on, Jyn undergoes several changes in self, and with life changing revelations along the way.

Rogue One feels all so familiar, yet, at the same time it feels different. The universe is Star Wars, and so are the laws that govern that universe, yet we are seeing all this at a time not covered in the main Star Wars films. This is a good thing, it allows the viewer to detach from those films, and become fully immersed in Rogue One, not needing to remember too many links to other tales and story arcs.

As a film, Rogue One is enjoyable. The momentum builds as the film gets underway, with the initial few short scenes providing some context to time and place, and then kicking off with the main story, striking the viewer with a barrage of imagery and sound that is sure to thrill anyone, young and old. Sure, you can’t really go wrong with Disney and a Star Wars film, but then again, there was that annoying Gungan and some plot points that upset fans.

Jyn Erso is a strong character, portrayed well by Felicity Jones. There are aspects that one could compare to Rey of The Force Awakens, but the character is strong enough to carry the film in a memorable way, capturing the heart of the viewer.

The plethora of supporting characters are as diverse as one would expect from any disparate Star Wars group, struggling to keep the Rebellion alive. The many creatures from various alien worlds, and of course, the droids, those mechanical creations meant to serve Empire and Rebellion alike, but who inevitably develop their own unique (often humorous) personalities.

Rogue One: A Star Wars story is thoroughly enjoyable. Not pushing science on the audience every few seconds, the film focusses on story, heroism, and above all, takes one on a ride across a galaxy, far, far away. Saying it is a “must see” is likely slightly redundant, as everyone is going to see it, if not right away with the fans and cosplayers, but soon. A story apart, in a universe we all know and love, this is sure to be the hit of the holiday season.

As usual, some 3D screens are darker, to be aware of this when visiting your local cinema. But, a move is in progress it seems to fix these. Of course, a thumbs up for the new Scene Xtreme laser projector. Read about the Scene Xtreme, Canal Walk here.

Rogue One: A Star Wars story opens 15 December 2016 in cinemas across South Africa, in 2D, 3D, 4DX, Scene Xtreme and Imax.

SAMDB was at the pre-screening of Rogue One: A Star Wars story, at the Nu Metro Scene Xtreme, at Canal Walk, Cape Town. The first digital laser projection system on the African continent, and the first cinema in Cape Town with Dolby Atmos sound. Read more about Nu Metro, Canal Walk, Scene Xtreme.

The screenings for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY will take place in multi-sensory 4DX at Nu Metro Hyde Park (Johannesburg), The Pavilion (Durban) and V&A Waterfront (Cape Town).

The new Scene Xtreme cinema at Nu Metro Canal Walk (Cape Town) and Scene Xtreme at Nu Metro Menlyn Park (Pretoria) will showcase this highly anticipated new blockbuster with full 360 degrees, all around-sound and Ultra High Definition-quality on a giant screen (including laser projection at Xtreme Canal Walk). Scene Xtreme cinemas also feature luxury recliner-seating.

ROGUE ONE is the eighth film in the Star Wars-franchise but the first to step outside the narrative of the other seven films in a standalone story set shortly before the events of 1977’s original STAR WARS — though Darth Vader, the Galactic Empire and The Death Star remain key elements. It follows a group of rebel spies trying to steal the schematics for the Empire’s Death Star.

These special pre-release screenings of ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY in Nu Metro’s Scene Xtreme and 4DX cinemas on Wednesday take place ahead of the film’s general South African release on Thursday, 15 December. This means Nu Metro is giving fans an opportunity to see the movie two days before the US and most other countries internationally – with an enhanced level of Scene Xtreme-quality on an Extra Large Format-screen, or with the added 4DX multi-sensory effect.

Nu Metro’s revolutionary, multi-dimensional 4DX cinemas employ motion, vibration, water, wind, lightning, scents, and more to create a truly mind-blowing experience – giving cinemagoers an adrenaline-fuelled, multi-sensory, digital 4D movie experience like nothing they have ever heard, seen, felt or even smelled before!

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY in 4DX is filled with dynamic and kinetic depictions of huge battle sequences. Tilting-forward and -backward movements are deployed to give a feeling of free-floating in the X-Wing fighter plane during spectacular battle scenes. Air shots and tickler effects add to the thrill-factor for the fire-fight with stormtroopers – accompanied by swirling wind and deep vibrations from the motion chair. And, when the Empire’s new weapon, the Death Star, is about to unleash its superpower and the group of rebels tries to fight back with all their might, the combination of 4DX effects such as fog, water and scents perfectly work in harmony to add another layer of immersive reality to the film.

Nu Metro Cinemas continues to pioneer the evolution of world-class cinema quality with Africa’s first ever Barco Laser Projection-cinema, along with a cinema screen which screams “Massive” – to be launched on Wednesday with these ROGUE ONE-screenings as part of Cape Town’s new Scene Xtreme-cinema at Nu Metro Canal Walk.

This cutting-edge new cinema, the first ever Scene Xtreme outside Gauteng, officially boasts the biggest cinema screen in the Western Cape! It will also be the first cinema in the city to feature the top-of-the-range Dolby Atmos sound system – making it only the 3rd Dolby Atmos-cinema in South Africa. Dolby Atmos is all-around 3D-sound, including overhead speakers – a complete improvement on the limitations of current “surround” cinema sound.

Scene Xtreme-cinemas are able to showcase films in full 4K Ultra High Definition-glory (UHD) on a giant screen. 4K UHD is the highest resolution-quality, but is even further enhanced by the precision and quality of the Barco laser projector at Xtreme Canal Walk – which also significantly increases the onscreen quality of standard 2K films. Standard movie shows are in 2K HD – 4K therefore means double the digital perfection, bringing viewers as close as possible to experiencing what they see onscreen in virtual reality.

The screening at Nu Metro Menlyn Park (Pta) will be accompanied by a Hot Toys activation and will also feature special guest appearances from a few very special Star Wars-cosplay characters.
