Escape Plan (DVD): Review

The Film

An operative, Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone), who tests the security of the hardest prisons is set up, and finds himself in the world’s most secret and secure prison. Here he befriends an inmate, Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), and together they plot a way to escape this hell.

Escape Plan, it’s an action romp, of sorts, with two of the 80’s and 90’s biggest action stars, namely Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. As action stars, running about as The Terminator and Rambo, they were in their prime, but focus has now shifted more to a character level. Sadly, although Stallone comes across with a tangible character, Schwarzenegger is more apt for those roles that can manage one-liners, such as his famous “I’ll be back”.

That being said, action lovers will enjoy this film, about the proverbial “tough guy against all odds”. The action sequences are not the main focus of the story, but are fun when they occur. Some of these scenes lead to some humorous moments, and kept the blood and gore to a minimum.

Disc And Bonus Features

The disc is encoded at a high bitrate, meaning it can be scaled via software to a high resolution screen. The soundtrack does make use of the surrounds, although not as much as you would think for an action movie, it does add to immersing the viewer and broadens the soundstage. There are sadly, no bonus features on the disc.

Escape Plan is available to purchase now in South African stores.
