Vir Die Voels

For the Huisgenoot Centenary film, Vir die Voëls, the talented artist, Charlize Berg, and producers, Hugo Ludick and Vaughan Gardiner, created a new version of the Afrikaans hit song, Hoeka Toeka.

The original version of the song by Carike Keuzenkamp was used in the film that will be released on the 25th of November 2016, but the version created by Charlize, Hugo and Vaughan, will be released as a music video and can be heard on radio stations nationwide from the 15th of November.

According to Charlize, “it was quite nerve wrecking to attempt a Carike Keuzenkamp hit song.” Hugo and Vaughan, however, walked the extra mile and created a version in their unique style. They created the sound to suit Charlize’s voice and style but still kept true to Carike. The end product is something unique, beautiful and creative with different harmonies and high notes.

To Vaughan and Hugo this was quite an intimidating assignment. Vaughan explains that they “did not want to destroy this legendary song and that it was quite a challenge to transform the song into something new that people would still want to listen to.” They still wanted to keep it recognisable, maintaining the structure but also creating a fresh pop sound.

According to Hugo, “the current day style of pop music differs from that of a few years ago. In the original version the choir part was repeated more often and the song was more simplistic. Today people want to hear something new within the first ten seconds of listening to a song.” They wanted to rearrange the song creatively to suite the current pop style.

They kept to certain of the original elements such as melody and lyrics, but created something more modern using instruments such as the drums and guitars. The revamping of Hoeka Toeka was based on the versatility of Charlize’s voice. They were nervous about the revamp but in the end something magical was created.

Vaughan believes that the essence of the song was maintained and that they transformed the popular song into something current and creative.

The film, Vir die Voëls, is based on the life story of Irma Humpel (Simoné Nortmann), a tomboy that finds herself in a wedding dress in front of the pulpit with the boy that teased her when they were children. She believed that independence was the only form of freedom until Sampie de Klerk (Francois Jacobs) caused her to rethink her convictions.

The narrative happens in the 1970’s. It is a nostalgic film about a willful woman ahead of her time and a man with a strong character that believes a woman should be respected but that you can still fight for her love. This is a story about self-conflict and how to prevent circumstances and emotional baggage from spoiling your opportunities to happiness.

Vir die Voëls was produced by The Film Factory in collaboration with kykNET Films.

The cast also includes Elize Cawood, Nicola Hanekom, Neels van Jaarsveld, Drikus Volschenk, Leandry Smith, Liam Bosman, Lara Kinnear, Candice Kruger and Bennie Fourie.

The film will be released on the 25th of November 2016 and will be distributed by Ster-Kinekor Entertainment. To view the teaser trailer, visit: youtube.com/watch?v=o5uGD5mfsBM
