Water Rights

The 1998 Water Act gives life to the concept of sharing water fairly. But, almost two decades later it seems the country’s water is still divided up according to ancient water laws. Carte Blanche travels to the Lemoenshoek Valley near Barrydale where a seven-year feud between farmers and downstream water users has caused deep rifts within the community. Who has the law on their side and does exercising your right to water mean you don’t have to worry about downstream users?

Producer: Anna-Maria van Niekerk and Marzanne van den Berg

Baboon Killings

It’s alleged that, since 2008, over 4000 baboons have been killed to reduce the destruction of pine plantations in Mpumalanga. Businesses claim it’s necessary because baboons are causing millions of Rands worth of damage, while on the other hand, conservationists are calling for an immediate ban on the killing of baboons. Carte Blanche investigates.

Hospital Neglect

A mother spends three days in the waiting area of a public hospital with a desperately ill toddler, while – at another academic hospital – nurses are caught sleeping while babies lie unattended. Why are the country’s most vulnerable still deprived of adequate healthcare? Carte Blanche uncovers severe negligence at two Gauteng public hospitals.
