Inxeba (The Wound) Continues Its Winning Streak

There’s no stopping Inxeba (The Wound), South Africa’s official entry to the 2018 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Having collected multiple awards around the world, the film has won the Tanit d’Argent at the 28th Carthage Film Festival, held in Tunisia from 4 to 11 November 2017.

The award was presented to director John Trengove. A festival popular with critics and the public alike, this year’s event featured a record number of 37 long features, 18 of which were fiction.

The production company behind Inxeba, South African company Urucu Media, had even further reason to celebrate as it co-produced the Mozambican film The Train of Salt and Sugar by Licinio Azevedo, which won big at the festival, taking home four awards: the Tanit d’Or for Best Fiction Feature, the prestigious International Federation of Cinema Critics award, the prize from the African Federation of Cinema Critics, and the Best Image award. The film is also the Mozambican entry to the 2018 Foreign Language category of the Academy Awards.

“We are extremely proud of our team,” says Elias Ribeiro, producer, Urucu Media. “It is a great honour for us to be part of the crew behind two exceptional films coming out of Africa, which have performed so well at the most prestigious film festival on the continent.  To have both of them as official submissions for the 2018 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film is both rewarding and exciting, and speaks to the quality of the talent available and the nuances of both stories.”

This year, Carthage featured films from Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Senegal, Cameroon, Mozambique, Burkina Faso and South Africa. A total of 180 films were screened among different categories in the official competition, the official selection out of competition, and parallel selections.

For the official competition, 51 films from 27 countries were involved, including 14 feature fiction length films, 15 short films and eight short documentaries. The Carthage Film Festival, the oldest art festival in Africa and the Arab world, was founded in 1966.

Recently, Inxeba won the Audience Award in Porto, Portugal and the Grand Jury Prize in Mumbai. With the Academy Awards season screenings in Los Angeles currently under way, the film is showing at selected venues, including the Landmark Theatre in Pico Boulevard on 20 and 29 November, and at The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica on 4 December.

A record 92 films are vying for the Oscars foreign language film shortlist.

Inxeba releases in South Africa on 02 February 2018.
