Four high school kids discover an old video game console, while in detention on afternoon, and upon trying a game cartridge, they are literally drawn into the game’s jungle setting becoming the adult avatars they chose, as Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson – The Fate of the Furious, Moana), Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan – The Circle, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), and Moose Finbar (Kevin Hart – The Secret Life of Pets, Ride Along).
As the third movie instalment of the Jumanji universe, following on from Jumanji, and then Zathura: A Space Adventure, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stays true to the original stories, yet brings with it an upgrade. No longer the physical game board, but a rather nostalgic video game console, an item which also dictates some of the in-world rules that follow as the story unfolds.
With the talented cast, and great comedic timing of the ensemble, Jumanji is funny. As one is whisked along with a very engrossing story, the laughs do not let up, whether they’re in-jokes for those who played the old video games of the 80s, or the millennial teens now in the form of adult avatars, there is no lack of entertainment here, and the film is sure to be one of the memorable movies of 2017.
As the intrepid group stumble their way through the game, following a dangerous quest to end level, they come across an eclectic mix of game characters, from the totally stereotypical, to the down-right funny NPCs (non-player characters).
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is one of those fun, feel good, family movies for everyone. And with the holiday season here, what better way to spend an afternoon, or evening, than being entertained, and laughing, at a great film.
