Comic Con Africa Announces Innovative Sewing Competition Sew-A-Thon 2022

Comic Con Africa, Africa’s largest multi-genre pop-culture and gaming festival, taking place from 22-25 September 2022 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, has announced an innovative and never seen before challenge: the Comic Con Africa Sew-A-Thon, putting the local fashion scene to the test. Brought to you by Brother South Africa and hosted by STADIO School of Fashion, this one-of-a-kind, 8-hour Sew-A-Thon looks to test the skills and the handiwork of local sewists, fashion designers, and costume designers – from beginners to advanced.

The Comic Con Africa Sew-A-Thon promises an intense, fun, and nail-biting competition for contestants. The event will also be broadcast live on YouTube for all to join in and spectate the gripping time-based challenge, while we are checking in with contestants as their creations come to life. Comic Con Africa Content Director, Rene Staack said that this fun experience will put the creative and technical know-how of beginner, intermediate, and advanced contestants to the test, all while standing a chance to win their share of a prize pool valued over R23 000,00 brought to you by Brother South Africa & STADIO.

“Cosplay is a cornerstone of Comic Con Africa, and behind every great cosplay is a great designer. We are hoping that this challenge highlights more craftmanship.” Staack added. “We encourage all to act fast with their registrations as space is limited.” The main challenge will remain a mystery, until two weeks prior to the Sew-A-Thon. Once the mystery brief has been revealed, leading up to the Comic Con Africa Sew-A-Thon contestants will be asked to create:

A Storyboard that explains what research was done and how they designed their outfit, which will then be brought with them on the event day for judging.

A Pattern of their own making for their outfit and must bring the pattern with them to the competition.

Garment/Costume Pieces that must be fully prepared but NOT finished. The different elements may be cut out with completed seams but cannot have any finishing details. The assembly of the outfit can only be done during the allocated competition times.

To add to the intensity, within the limited time frame, contestants will also be given a side challenge to create items that will be donated to Comic Con Africa’s selected charity. Esteemed judges Chenelle van Wyk, Patrick Brill, Terese Potgieter, Jinxie Cosplay, Ludus Cosplay will be scoring contestants on criterion based on their, story board, pattern, finishes, design, and overall execution with extra points given for the bonus side challenges.
