“BREATHE is about how we inhale the memories of people who have been torn from our lives, whether by death or other circumstances, and use them to move on; as well as how those memories sometimes make it difficult for us to breathe,” says Sharine Barnard about her latest single.
This beautiful tribute to her late father, produced by 2 Tone Records, was written by the artist herself and combines elements of pop and classical music.
“My father passed away in 2017 after a short battle with brain and lung cancer. Nothing can ever prepare you for the death of a loved one or the battle against cancer. I wrote BREATHE last year, exactly four years after his death, when I was overcome with sadness. I couldn’t stop missing him, because the memories never fade,” she shares. “The song symbolizes the injustice of life and how dreams are destroyed, and everything just goes on, because even though people are no longer with us, the water still flows. Fortunately, we always have our memories. It stays and we breathe it in. It also encourages me to appreciate and breathe-in every moment with those I love, because their breath is only lent to us.”
Sharine believes that the song will appeal to everyone who has ever lost someone they loved. She also hopes that it will comfort listeners when they are sad.
The music video of the song, of which the piano scenes were shot on location by Johan Pretorius in the M.L. Spies hall at Hoër Meisieskool Oranje, is a heartfelt production in which she immortalizes the memories of her father.
“I chose to use a combination of photo and video images of my father, as well as shots of myself in front of the piano. My father always enjoyed listening when I sang or played the piano as a little girl. He was very proud of me and loved listening to music,” she explains. “The song is about him and how his memories are ingrained in my heart. Everyone loved him and I would like those who miss him to watch the video and experience Hannes Liebenberg again.”
BREATHE is the singer-songwriter and animal lover’s sixth single and follows in the footsteps of hits like Pray and Killer, which were very well received.
Sharine was born and raised in Jan Kempdorp, where she spent a carefree childhood. Although she has always loved music, it has not been the core focus of her life – she has spent the past 20 years raising children, creating a safe haven for lions and building various businesses. This changed during lockdown when the mother of four finally had time to sit down and take stock. She started writing about life and love, and soon there was no stopping her.
In addition to her love for music, Sharine, who is the co-owner of Bagamoya Wildlife Estate, is passionate about animals. She is also extremely enthusiastic about sport and health and is co-owner of an Ozone Therapy clinic, Ozone Clinic, that helps people be healthier. On weekends she works as chef in her own restaurant.
BREATHE is a special song that will definitely speak to the hearts of those who listen to it and will surely, like the person it is about, have a lasting impression on her fans.
“We have to take time to cherish the memories of those who are no longer with us. They were part of our lives and helped shape the people we are today. That is why their lives should be celebrated. The missing never stops, but luckily the beautiful memories remain. It is especially challenging not to have them around on Father’s or Mother’s Day and that is why I am dedicating the song to him. To celebrate and remember him on Father’s Day,” she concludes.

“BREATHE gaan oor hoe ons die herinneringe van mense wat uit ons lewens geskeur is, hetsy deur die dood of ander omstandighede, inasem en dit gebruik om aan te gaan; asook hoe daardie herinneringe dit soms vir ons moeilik maak om asem te haal,” sê Sharine Barnard oor haar nuutste enkelsnit.
Hierdie pragtige huldeblyk aan oorlede pa, vervaardig deur 2 Tone Records, kom uit haar eie pen en kombineer elemente van pop en klassieke musiek.
“My pa is in 2017 oorlede na ’n kortstondige stryd met brein- en longkanker. Niks kan jou ooit voorberei op ’n geliefde se dood of die stryd teen kanker nie. Ek het BREATHE verlede jaar geskryf, presies vier jaar na sy dood, toe die gemis en hartseer my ontvou het en net nie wou weggaan nie. Dit was net konstante heimwee wat my gemoed gevul het, omdat die herinneringe nooit ophou nie,” deel sy. “Die liedjie simboliseer die onregverdigheid van die lewe en hoe drome verwoes word en als net aangaan, want al is mense nie meer met ons nie vloei die water steeds. Gelukkig vloei die herinneringe nie saam weg nie. Dit bly en ons asem dit in. Dit moedig my ook aan om elke oomblik saam met diegene wat ek liefhet te waardeer en in te asem; want daardie asem is net vir ons geleen.”
Sharine glo dat almal verlies verstaan en daarom by die snit sal aanklank vind. Sy hoop ook dat dit vir luisteraars troos sal bring wanneer hulle hartseer en heimwee ervaar.
Die musiekvideo van die liedjie, waarvan die klaviergedeeltes in die M.L. Spiessaal by Hoër Meisieskool Oranje verfilm is deur Johan Pretorius, is ’n roerende onthou-video waarin sy die herinneringe van haar pa verewig.
“Ek het gekies om ’n kombinasie van foto’s en video-beelde van my pa, asook skote van myself voor die klavier te gebruik. My pa het vandat ek ’n klein dogtertjie was altyd gesit en geluister as ek klavier gespeel en gesing het, was altyd trots op my en was verskriklik lief vir musiek luister,” verduidelik sy. “Die liedjie gaan oor hom en hoe sy herinneringe in my hart vas gesetel is. Almal was lief vir hom en ek wil graag hê dat diegene wat hom mis na die video moet kyk en weer vir Hannes Liebenberg ervaar.”
BREATHE is dié sanger, liedjieskrywer en diereliefhebber se sesde enkelsnitvrystelling en volg in die suksesvolle voetspore van treffers soos Pray en Killer wat baie goed ontvang is.
Sharine het Jan Kempdorp grootgeword, waar sy ’n sorgvrye kinderlewe gehad het. Alhoewel sy altyd mal was oor musiek, was dit nie die hooffokus van haar lewe nie – sy het die afgelope twintig jaar kinders grootgemaak, ’n veilige hawe geskep vir leeus en ander groot katte en verskeie suksesvolle besighede gebou wat sy steeds bedryf. Dit het verander gedurende grendeltyd, toe hierdie ma van vier uiteindelik tyd gehad het om asem te skep en weer haar musiekpassie uit te leef. Sy het toe begin skryf oor die lewe en die liefde en die res is geskiedenis.
Buiten vir haar liefde vir musiek, is Sharine – wat die mede-eienaar is van Bagamoya Wildlife Estate – ook passievol oor diere. Sy is ook baie passievol oor sport en gesondheid en is mede-eienaar van ’n Osoonterapie-kliniek – Ozone Clinic – wat mense help om gesonder te wees. Naweke werk sy ook as sjef by haar eie restaurant.
BREATHE is ’n besonderse lied wat beslis met harte gaan praat en, net soos die persoon waaroor dit gaan, diep spore gaan laat in die harte van dié kunstenaar se aanhangers.
“Ons moet tyd vat om die mense wat nie by ons is of kan wees nie se herinneringe te koester. Hulle was deel van ons lewens en het gehelp vorm aan die mense wat ons vandag is. Daarom moet ’n mens hulle lewe vier. Die gemis raak nooit makliker nie, maar die mooi herinneringe bly. Veral op dae soos Vadersdag en Moedersdag is dit uitdagend om hulle nie meer met ons te hê nie, en daarom dra ek die lied op aan hom. Om sy herinnering op Vadersdag vier en te koester,” sluit sy af.
