Since then, Sara has been globetrotting albeit virtually, to secure financing for her ground-breaking film, <em>Black People Don\u2019t Get Depressed<\/em>. \u00a0\u00a0The documentary is a personal journey through trauma and mental health issues that investigates the struggles, rituals and triumphs of Africans in an attempt to demystify depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018My aim has been to understand the experiences of depression that are a burden so many Africans carry secretly and with shame.&nbsp; Whether it\u2019s myself here in Joburg, a poet of immigrant roots in Canada or healer in Nigeria \u2013 we\u2019ve all carried a burden of trauma.&nbsp; I want to probe how we process and heal that burden\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0At DFM \u2018The International Emerging\u00a0Film\u00a0Talent Association\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iefta.org\/spotlight-projects-at-cannes-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(IEFTA<\/a>) offered critical support to Sara and her producing partner, Cati Weinek, in finding global partners, which led to\u00a0 to the documentary being \u2018spotlighted\u2019 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchedufilm.com\/programs\/cannes-docs\/spotlighted-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cannes March\u00e9 Du Film<\/a> \u00a0with three others as works-in-progress by emerging filmmakers from across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great privilege to have been invited on to the Cannes Film Market, showcasing a great social change documentary among our peers\u2019, said Cati Weinek, producer at The Ergo Company, one of SA\u2019s premiere film studios. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;With the ongoing COVID pandemic, the Cannes Film Market is a hybrid format this year &#8211; with meetings, screenings, and workshops both in person as well as online.&nbsp; Both Sara and Cati are filling their diaries with potential funders, co-producers, distributors and programmers and other key industry professionals to help make this documentary a reality. After all, film-making is a collaborative enterprise and requires multiple sources of investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Our biggest excitement was when the Presidential Stimulus Fund via the National film and Video Foundation committed funds to our project. Then I knew it was surely going to happen one way or the way\u2019.&nbsp; Sara reflects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research, filming, and fund-raising has been ongoing for the last year but in order to complete the film, more partners must be found to meet the 70% funding still required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cannes market and festival is taking place from the 08-13 July 2021 in Cannes, France.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Director Sara Chitambo\u2019s documentary was first supported by the Durban Film Market (DFM) in August 2020.
