Billed as North America\u2019s top genre film festival, Fantasia is running from 5-25 August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Glasshouse | Showmax Movies | First on Showmax\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GHBHEh4s1NA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Glasshouse<\/em> is set after The Shred, an airborne dementia, has left humanity roaming like lost and dangerous animals, unable to remember who they are. Confined to their airtight glasshouse, a family does what they must to survive &#8211; until the sisters are seduced by a stranger who upsets the family\u2019s rituals, unearthing a past they have tried to bury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Glasshouse<\/em> stars British actress Jessica Alexander (the upcoming live action remake of <em>The Little Mermaid<\/em>) and newcomer Anja Taljaard as the sisters, Bee and Evie, opposite Hilton Pelser (the BAFTA-nominated <em>Moffie<\/em>, the upcoming remake of <em>Dangerous Liaisons<\/em>) as The Stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSensual and savage, <em>Glasshouse<\/em> weaves aspects of dystopian science fiction with notes of folk horror and perverse, brooding, Gothic melodrama to craft a taught existential tale that ultimately explores the importance of storytelling and memory,\u201d says Fantasia, using additional adjectives like \u201cstunning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The spooky yet sexy post-pandemic love triangle is the feature film directorial debut of Kelsey Egan, who co-wrote the script with associate producer Emma Lungiswa de Wet. Kelsey and Emma are award-winning writers: Kelsey is best known for helping adapt the Deon Meyer bestseller <em>Trackers<\/em> for M-Net, Cinemax and ZDF, while Emma was a staff writer on the YouTube animated phenomenon <em>Munki and Trunk<\/em>, which now has over six million subscribers to its <em>Jungle Beat<\/em> channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been working towards directing features since I made my first short back in 2008, so to end up directing my first film in 2020 of all years feels like some form of dramatic irony,\u201d says Kelsey. \u201cTo shoot this intimate post-apocalyptic fable during the pandemic was a surreal experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DoP Justus de Jager (an Africa Movie Academy Award nominee for <em>Siembamba<\/em>) shot <em>Glasshouse<\/em> at The Pearson Conservatory, a Victorian glasshouse marooned in the Eastern Cape since 1881. Emma calls the national monument, which she remembers from childhood, \u201cthe perfect setting for a story about memory: a colonial relic at once fragile and persistent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelsey adds that <em>Glasshouse<\/em> \u201cexplores two opposing coping mechanisms to trauma: holding tightly to the past as a form of preservation, and wilful forgetting.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greig Buckle is producing through Local Motion Pictures. Buckle was co-producer of the Oscar-shortlisted <em>Life, Above All <\/em>and line produced the #1 US box office hit <em>Chronicle,<\/em> among other high-profile service jobs in South Africa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Film and theatre veteran Adrienne Pearce (the BAFTA-winning <em>Troy <\/em>and the Emmy-winning <em>The Triangle); <\/em>12-year-old Naledi Award winner and Fleur du Cap nominee Kitty Harris (<em>Matilda the Musical<\/em>); and rising star Brent Vermeulen co-star. Brent was singled out by <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> as \u201cone of this year&#8217;s major acting discoveries in Cannes\u201d when <em>The Harvesters (Die Stropers)<\/em> screened in Un Certain Regard in 2018 and has gone on to act in <em>Griekwastad<\/em>, named Best Film at the 2021 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), and in South African TV series like the critically-acclaimed <em>4 Mure <\/em>and the SAFTA-nominated <em>Alles Malan<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Glasshouse<\/em> is a claustrophobic, thought-provoking story of family survival and buried secrets,\u201d says Candice Fangueiro, head of content at Showmax. \u201cWe\u2019re delighted the film is having its world premiere at Fantasia, the latest in a string of coups for South African films this year, like <em>Moffie<\/em>\u2019s BAFTA nomination, <em>Five Tiger<\/em>\u2019s selection for Sundance, <em>Gaia<\/em> winning the ZEISS Cinematography Award at SXSW, and <em>This Is Not A Burial, It\u2019s A Resurrection <\/em>being ranked fourth on <em>Metacritic<\/em>\u2019s list of the best-reviewed films of 2021 so far.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Glasshouse<\/em> is the first film in a three-picture dystopian slate Showmax has developed with Local Motion Pictures, in association with Crave Pictures, with Kelsey directing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This October, <em>Glasshouse <\/em>will release as a Cinema Premiere on BoxOffice by DStv and will be available to rent on PVRs only in South Africa, as well as in countries on the African continent where BoxOffice is available. <em>Glasshouse<\/em> will be available to stream on Showmax from February 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/fantasiafestival.com\/en\/program\/glasshouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/fantasiafestival.com\/en\/program\/glasshouse<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Showmax film Glasshouse has been selected for the 25th Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada.
