Turbulence is expected on this route, so please fasten your seatbelts for HBO\u2019s murder mystery comedy, <em>The Flight Attendant<\/em>, now on Showmax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Flight Attendant<\/em> is nominated for nine Emmys this year, including Outstanding Comedy Series, with Critics\u2019 Choice, People\u2019s Choice and Teen Choice Award winner Kaley Cuoco (Penny in <em>The Big Bang Theory)<\/em> up for Outstanding Actress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She plays reckless flight attendant Cassie Bowden, who wakes up in the wrong bed, with a dead guy beside her, and no idea what happened. Unable to piece the night together, she begins to wonder if she could be the killer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oscar nominee Rosie Perez (<em>Birds of Prey<\/em>) is also up for an Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress while 2021 Critics\u2019 Choice Super Award nominee Michiel Huisman (<em>The Haunting of Hill House<\/em>, <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>), Emmy nominee TR Knight (<em>Grey&#8217;s Anatomy\u2019s <\/em>George O\u2019Malley), Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna from <em>Girls<\/em>), and BAFTA nominee Michelle Gomez (<em>Doctor Who<\/em>, <em>Bad Education<\/em>) co-star.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the novel of the same name by <em>New York Times<\/em> bestselling author Chris Bohjalian (Oprah Book Club favourite <em>Midwives<\/em>), <em>The Flight Attendant<\/em> was also nominated for a 2021 Golden Globe and a Critics\u2019 Choice Award for Best Comedy Series, among other honours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After 12 years on <em>The Big Bang Theory<\/em>, Kaley says, she \u201cneeded to start thinking about what the next path was going to be. <em>The Flight Attendant<\/em> is such an interesting premise, I knew I had to jump on this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And jump she did, even before she\u2019d finished the book. In an interview on <em>Good Morning America<\/em>, Kaley said, \u201cI read the first line on Amazon three years ago, and I got this chill up my spine. I know that sounds clich\u00e9d but it really happened. I immediately called my team, and the first question out of my mouth was, \u2018Did [<em>Big Little Lies<\/em> producer] Reese Witherspoon get the rights to this book?\u2019 And they were like, \u2018Let me check\u2026\u2019 \u2018Cause I just assumed, for sure. And she hadn\u2019t! It was a miracle. And I\u2019m like, \u2018Okay, I gotta get them.\u2019 Six months later, I won this bidding war and all of a sudden I had the rights to this book. That was three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Flight Attendant <\/em>started filming in November of 2019, in locations across the globe. \u201cYou can\u2019t pretend Bangkok, you can\u2019t pretend Rome, and so it became this insane world-wide production that I still can\u2019t believe that we did, minutes before the world shut down,\u201d Kaley says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many other series, they didn\u2019t quite make it to the end of production before the pandemic scuppered their plans, half-way through shooting episode six of the series\u2019 eight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had to stop production three days into it because of COVID and then, six months later, come back and pick it up in the middle of one of the darkest, most emotional and wacky episodes,\u201d creator Steve Yockey (<em>Scream<\/em>, <em>Supernatural<\/em>), who is Emmy-nominated for his script, told <em>GoldDerby.com<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Flight Attendant<\/em>\u2019sjourney to the small screen may have been marked by turbulence and unexpected delays, but the end result is a supremely bingeable, non-stop thrill ride. \u201c<em>The Flight Attendant<\/em> is exciting, surprising, and it gets more and more wild as the episodes go on,\u201d Kaley says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to <em>Sirius XM<\/em> about the adaptation, Kaley said, \u201cThe book is very dark. It\u2019s written a lot darker than what we ended up doing. But I could see where this character could go so many different places emotionally. I was like, \u2018Ooh, I could make <em>this<\/em> quirky,\u2019 and \u2018<em>That\u2019s<\/em> really disheartening\u2019, and, \u2018Oh my God the alcoholism,\u2019 and, \u2018She\u2019s the life of the party, but holy sh*t look at the trauma in her life!\u2019 To me, that\u2019s an actress\u2019 dream, to be able to play a role like that. So I knew this could be really, really fun\u2026 I just loved Cassie. She was such a disaster, but I knew I could make her lovable and make the audience fall in love with her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s exactly what Kaley has done. Even as we\u2019re groaning at Cassie\u2019s terrible decisions \u2013 and, inevitably, imagining how we\u2019d have made much better choices if, say, <em>we\u2019d<\/em> woken up beside a dead body in a foreign country known to issue five-year jail terms for <em>littering<\/em> \u2013 we\u2019re also rooting for her.
