Chalamet leads a star-studded ensemble in an origin story that explores the vivid, mythical beginnings of the imaginative young inventor before he becomes the renowned scrumdiddlyumptious Mozart of chocolate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures\u2019 \u201cWonka,\u201d with Oscar nominee Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet (upcoming \u201cDune,\u201d \u201cCall Me By Your Name\u201d) in the titular role, under the direction of award-winning filmmaker Paul King (the \u201cPaddington\u201d films). Oscar-nominated producer David Heyman (\u201cOnce Upon a Time\u2026 In Hollywood\u201d), who produced the \u201cHarry Potter,\u201d \u201cFantastic Beasts\u201d and \u201cPaddington\u201d films, Luke Kelly, who produced the recent feature adaptation of Roald Dahl\u2019s The Witches as well as the upcoming \u201cMatilda,\u201d and Alexandra Derbyshire, who executive produced the \u201cPaddington\u201d films and the upcoming \u201cJurassic World: Dominion,\u201d are producing \u201cWonka.\u201d The film is based on characters by Roald Dahl, inspired especially by one of Dahl\u2019s most beloved characters, Willy Wonka, and takes place before the events of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starring alongside Chalamet are Rowan Atkinson (the \u201cJohnny English\u201d and \u201cMr. Bean\u201d films, \u201cLove Actually\u201d), Mathew Baynton (\u201cThe Wrong Mans,\u201d \u201cGhosts\u201d), Jim Carter (\u201cDownton Abbey\u201d), Oscar winner Olivia Colman (\u201cThe Favourite\u201d), Tom Davis (\u201cPaddington 2,\u201d \u201cKing Gary\u201d), Simon Farnaby (the \u201cPaddington\u201d films, \u201cRogue One: A Star Wars Story\u201d), Rich Fulcher (\u201cMarriage Story,\u201d \u201cDisenchantment\u201d), Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (\u201cThe Shape of Water,\u201d the \u201cPaddington\u201d films, \u201cSpencer\u201d), Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (\u201cPaddington 2,\u201d \u201cZack Snyder\u2019s Justice League,\u201d \u201cMary Poppins Returns\u201d), Paterson Joseph (\u201cVigil,\u201d \u201cNoughts + Crosses\u201d), Emmy and Peabody Award winner Keegan-Michael Key (\u201cThe Prom,\u201d \u201cSchmigadoon\u201d), Calah Lane (\u201cThe Day Shall Come\u201d), Matt Lucas (\u201cPaddington,\u201d \u201cLittle Britain\u201d), Colin O\u2019Brien (\u201cThe Mothership\u201d), Natasha Rothwell (\u201cWhite Lotus,\u201d \u201cInsecure\u201d), Rakhee Thakrar (\u201cSex Education,\u201d \u201cFour Weddings and a Funeral\u201d) and Ellie White (\u201cThe Other One,\u201d \u201cThe Windsors\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King is directing from a screenplay he wrote with \u201cPaddington 2\u201d co-writer Simon Farnaby (with prior writers including Simon Rich, Simon Stephenson, Jeff Nathanson, and Steven Levenson). Michael Siegel and Rosie Alison are serving as executive producers. King\u2019s behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Seamus McGarvey (\u201cAnna Karenina,\u201d \u201cAtonement\u201d); Oscar-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (\u201cTenet,\u201d \u201cDunkirk\u201d); editor Mark Everson (the \u201cPaddington\u201d films); and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (the \u201cPaddington\u201d films, \u201cTopsy-Turvy\u201d). Neil Hannon of the band The Divine Comedy is writing original songs for the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
