Euphoria<\/em> topped multiple \u201cthe most anticipated shows of 2022\u201d lists, from Complex<\/em> to Esquire<\/em>, Mashable <\/em>to Polygon<\/em>. Now the first episode of its long-awaited second season is streaming on Showmax, with new episodes coming express from the US every Monday.\u00a0
Sam Levinson\u2019s ground-breaking adults-only hit series stars Zendaya (Chani in Dune<\/em>, and MJ in the Tom Holland Spider-Man<\/em> movies) as teenage addict Rue, trying to find hope while balancing the pressures of love, loss and addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been two years since Season 1 concluded, and the mid-pandemic 2020\/21 two-part special only made us miss it more, so it\u2019s no surprise that the Season 2 trailer hit over 1 million views on YouTube<\/em> within 12 hours when it dropped at the end of November last year.\u00a0
Euphoria<\/em> isn\u2019t for everyone, and Season 2 looks set to be as controversial as the first. But the fans are, well, euphoric. As Mashable<\/em> says, \u201cEuphoria<\/em> grows up in smart, spectacular Season 2\u2026 Triumphant\u2026 Stupefyingly bold\u2026 Euphoria<\/em>‘s intoxicating blend of striking music, visuals, and supercharged feeling makes for a dream-like watch\u2026 Zendaya is at a career-best with a performance so dazzling they might as well engrave her trophies now\u2026 An electrifying ride you won\u2019t want to wait for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to her 2020 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (which saw her breaking the record for the youngest ever actress to scoop the title), Zendaya also won the 2019 People\u2019s Choice Award for Favourite Drama TV Star and a 2020 Black Reel Award for the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Euphoria<\/em> also won 2020 Emmys for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and for Contemporary Makeup, while the two-part special bridging the pandemic-enforced gap between seasons was nominated for a Peabody Award and three 2021 Emmys, for Cinematography, Make-up and Costume.\u00a0 \u00a0 Euphoria<\/em>\u2019s cast list reads like a who\u2019s-who of rising young stars, and all our favourites are back this season, a little older, but not always wiser. Returning faces include trans superstar Hunter Schafer as Jules and 2021 AP Breakthrough Entertainer Sydney Sweeney (TheWhite Lotus<\/em>), along with Black Reel nominee Algee Smith (Judas and the Black Messiah<\/em>), Teen Choice nominee Storm Reid (The Invisible Man<\/em>), Jacob Elordi (The Kissing Booth<\/em>), Alexa Demie (Waves<\/em>), Barbie Ferreira (Unpregnant<\/em> and the upcoming Jordan Peele horror Nope<\/em>), Austin Abrams (This Is Us<\/em>, Paper Towns<\/em>), Judd Apatow\u2019s daughter Maude Apatow (The King of Staten Island<\/em>), and People\u2019s Choice Award nominee Eric Dane (Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019ve all been super careful to avoid spoilers of any kind ahead of the Season 2 launch, with most interviews devolving into a series of awkward \u201cum\u201ds as they dodged reveals of any kind. But we do know that there\u2019s at least one love triangle on the cards this season, with singer-songwriter Dominic Fike coming in to further complicate things for Rue and Jules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news initially upset both fans and the cast: \u201cWhen Sam (Levinson) first kind of talked about the idea of this Elliot character, I wasn\u2019t feeling it \u2014 as someone who ships \u2018Rules\u2019 to the bitter end,\u201d Zendaya told Variety<\/em>. \u201cBut, in retrospect, and also as someone who understands where the show needs to go and what needs to happen for these characters, it\u2019s crucial that Elliot exist\u2026 [he\u2019s] the catalyst for a lot of things that just have to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which probably means, for those of us who\u2019ve been hoping against all common sense for a magical happy ending for Rue and Jules, that there\u2019s a rough rollercoaster of a season ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile they are getting thrown back into the same spaces at the same parties, and reintroducing themselves to each other \u2026, not everything that they were dealing with in Season 1 is resolved by any means,\u201d Hunter told extratv<\/em>. \u201cThey were emotionally elusive to each other in Season 1 and I think that, until it\u2019s directly addressed between the two and they actually talk about their f***ing relationship, it\u2019s probably going to stick around for a little bit. Which is\u2026 sticky, and tough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo matter how hard life was, it got harder, and more complicated,\u201d Rue warned us in a recent TV spot for Season 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think all Rue is really searching for is a little bit of peace, a little bit of happiness, a little bit of consistency and stability,\u201d Zendaya told extratv<\/em>, \u201c…[not just] in her life, but inside her own head. That\u2019s something that she\u2019s constantly trying to self-medicate\u2026\u00a0I think, when we\u2019re heading into this second season, she\u2019s trying to be a functioning drug addict\u2026 And I think we all know that\u2019s not going to work, and it\u2019s not going to last, and it\u2019s probably going to come to a very painful end. But that\u2019s something that she has to find and learn on her own, no matter how painful it is to have to watch her deal with. But I do want to maintain this sense of hope for her and for her future and for the things that she deserves in her life. She is<\/em> worthy of a beautiful, beautiful future; I think she just has to feel that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
