9 Fellows selected to develop 4 live action dramas, 3 live action comedies, and 1 adult animation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sundance Institute announced today the 9 Fellows and 8 projects selected for their 2021-2022 Episodic Program. This year marks the Episodic Lab\u2019s return to in-person activities at the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah bookended by a digital pre-lab story development curriculum and its first annual Episodic Pitch Parlor hosted in Los Angeles in partnership with XRM Media.

The selected Fellows are Aisha Bhoori (Pipe Dreams<\/em>), Bridget McManus (The Family Pet<\/em>), Corey Dashaun (Bottom Bitch<\/em>), Elizabeth Palmore (Gives Good Death<\/em>), Jeanette Lim and Marva Whitaker (Before the Apple<\/em>), Jianna Maarten Saada (El Otro Lado<\/em>), Mars Wolfe (The 1 & Only MJ Girls<\/em>), and Meghan Ross (Here to Make Friends<\/em>). Four of the eight projects are live-action dramas, three are live- action comedies, and one is an adult animation.

The Program is an entry point and sustaining force for early career writers with original series IP who have yet to be produced, several without literary representation or preexisting industry access. The Episodic Lab is a keystone immersive six-day experience that gives writers an opportunity to workshop their pilot and expand their writing skills. Under the guidance of accomplished showrunners, producers, and executives, the Fellows participate in one-on-one story meetings, case study screenings, panels, and simulated writers rooms, which provide creative and strategic tools to shape their pilots.

Creative Advisors this year have included April Shih, Brandon Sonnier, Charles Eglee, Colleen Werthmann, Danny Chun, Dara Resnik, Elgin James, Erica Rivinoja, Jenny Bicks, Kevin Etten, Roch\u00e9e Jeffrey, Vera Santamaria, Sanjay Shah, and Steven Canals.

Industry Mentors who participated at the Lab include Candace Rodney (Dreamville), Carolina Garcia (netflix), Carrie Gillogly (AMC), Dante Di Loreto (FreeMantle), Kathryn Tyus-Adair (STARZ), Nancy Cotton (Epix), Neil Thomas (MRC), Sarah Timberman (Timberman Beverly), and Sue Turley (XRM).

Post Lab support focuses on navigating the business, including securing representation, staffing, and pitching skills. On May 4, Sundance will host its inaugural industry-facing Episodic Pitch Parlor presented by XRM Media.\u00a0 This is an invitation-only live event designed to be both launchpad and celebration to introduce the writers and their Lab projects.

The Sundance Institute Episodic Program is made possible by Founding Supporters Lyn and Norman Lear and Cindy Harrell Horn and Alan Horn. Leadership Supporters are AMC+, Epix, Netflix, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, MRC Television, STARZ, and XRM Media.

After completion of the Lab, the Episodic Advancement Fund provides additional monetary support to Fellows with grants for research, pitch decks, proof of concept videos, further development of the pilot post-Lab, and travel costs associated with scheduled meetings and opportunities.

On February 23-24, the Episodic Program will be launching a two day Intensive Workshop with the goal of increasing pathways of support for early career and emerging episodic storytellers. This Intensive is supporting 10\u00a0 Fellows who are participating virtually from 6 states across the US (New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, Georgia, California, Oregon), and internationally from Bogota, Columbia, and Amsterdam, Netherlands. The selected Intensive Fellows are Kuamel Stewart, Kalen Feeney, Jennifer Dunn, Chad Charlie, Desdemona Chiang, Kimrie Lewis, George Perez, Trae Harris, Antonina Kerguelen and Giulia Jimenez. Creative guests and workshop leaders included Josh Feldman, Misha Green, Teresa Hsaio, Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.

The Lab is overseen by Founding Senior Director, Artist Programs, Michelle Satter and Episodic Director Jandiz Estrada Cardoso.

\u201cThis was a year of many firsts and I hope to continue reinventing new systems of support for bold creators who are going overlooked,\u201d said Episodic Program Director Jandiz Estrada Cardoso. \u201cAudiences and networks are insatiable, thirsting for untouched stories. So to any writer seeking to cut through and elevate their work, we have a mountain we can all scale together.\u201d

Episodic Lab Alumni include producers Katori Hall (PValley<\/em>), Barry Jenkins (Underground Railroad<\/em>), Rafael Agustin (Hipster Death Rattle<\/em>), Desiree Akhavan (The Bisexual<\/em>), and Heather Rae (Outer Range<\/em>). Past Fellows have gone on to earn writing positions on shows including This is Us<\/em>, Little America<\/em>, Dave, Snowpiercer, You\u2019re the Worst<\/em>, Better Call Saul<\/em>, Silicon Valley<\/em>, Fresh off the Boat<\/em>, American Gods<\/em>,\u00a0 and The Americans.<\/em> Alumni have also set up or sold Lab projects at networks including HBO, Amazon, Hulu, FX, ABC, CW, AMC, TBS, and Netflix.

2021-2022 SUNDANCE EPISODIC LAB PROJECTS AND WRITING FELLOWS

Pipe Dreams<\/em><\/strong>
Pipe Dreams<\/em> is a half-hour buddy comedy that follows two quarter-life Muslim-American women who live above a hookah bar in Brooklyn, navigating love, work, and their ever-elusive dreams one puff of shisha at a time.

Aisha Bhoori <\/strong>is a Pakistani-American writer whose credits include Staircase<\/em> for HBO Max. She graduated from Harvard, where she was a three-time recipient of the Edward Eager Memorial Fund Prize for Best Creative Writing and the Harvard Monthly Prize for Greatest Literary Promise.

The Family Pet<\/em><\/strong>
In this hour-long family drama, a young woman hired by a wealthy psychiatrist to care for her precocious daughter, discovers the seven-year-old may be a serial killer in the making.

Bridget McManus<\/strong> is the creator and host of Brunch With Bridget<\/em> (LogoTV), she is also recognized from her recurring roles on Transparent<\/em> (Amazon) and The Queen Latifah Show<\/em> (CBS). She received her BFA from NYU\u2019S Tisch School of the Arts, and trained at both The Second City and The Groundlings. Repped by Industry Entertainment.

Bottom Bitch<\/em><\/strong>
Bottom Bitch<\/em> chronicles the rise and fall of a disgraced gay-for-pay actor turned producer who joins forces with a street hustler to launch one of the first mainstream New York-based gay porn studios featuring black and brown performers in the 90s

Corey Dashaun<\/strong> is a staff writer on One Of Us Is Lying<\/em> for Peacock and UCP. In 2021, he won the Seriesfest Storytellers Initiative Competition and partnered with Propagate Content to develop the winning script Fuck! Summer’s Over<\/em>. He is currently developing Groupies<\/em>, a horror-comedy feature, with Hyperobject Industries. As a 2021 Project Involve fellow, he was the Sony Pictures Entertainment fellowship recipient.

Gives Good Death<\/em><\/strong>
Gives Good Death <\/em>is a half-hour dramedy about a commitment-phobic death doula practicing in Los Angeles. Will fulfilling clients\u2019 bucket lists, erasing evidence of their checkered pasts, or simply holding their hands as they take their last breaths finally inspire her to start living?

Elizabeth Palmore<\/strong> is the screenwriter of The Evening Hour<\/em>, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Following her work with Pixar Animation, Palmore served as an assistant to Daniel Day-Lewis and Kathleen Kennedy. A Virginia native with an MFA in Playwriting (SFSU), Palmore is represented by The Gersh Agency.

Before the Apple<\/em><\/strong>
Eve, a quirky, curious scientist, escapes the Garden of Eden and teams up with a deadpan but loyal Snake and the first ape to stand, Lucy, on a journey to find any meaning that can be found in the zany, broken universe they live in, all long before Eve\u2019s ever tempted to sample a forbidden fruit. Adult animated comedy.

Jeanette Lim<\/strong> is a Singaporean American immigrant, Stanford University graduate, and esteemed assistant of writers at American Dad!<\/em> and Futurama<\/em>. Her short, Alma Y Paz<\/em>, recently screened at Berlinale. Marva and Jeanette were staffed on WB\u2019s Tiny Toons<\/em> and wrote an episode of Netflix\u2019s The Twits.<\/em> Repped by Management 360.

Marva Whitaker<\/strong> is a multiracial writer whose childhood love of science-fiction prompted her to earn degrees in English and physics at ASU before pursuing her screenwriting MFA at USC.<\/em> Marva and Jeanette were staffed on WB\u2019s Tiny Toons<\/em> and wrote an episode of Netflix\u2019s The Twits.<\/em> Repped by Management 360.

Graduating from Columbia University\u2019s writing program and AFI Directing, Jianna loves doing deep, complex takes on genre.

The 1 & Only MJ Girls<\/em><\/strong>

Mars Wolfe<\/strong> (they\/them) orbits New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, writing and moonlighting as 11 o\u2019Clock: genderqueer drag queen. Mars has written\/performed for The Onion and their plays have been developed at All Arts\/PBS, Victory Gardens, and Juilliard. Mars\u2019 Trans-fairytale series, Who Rang the Bell?!<\/em>, is being archived in the Library of Congress.

Here to Make Friends<\/strong><\/em>
An anxious, aging millennial, Arab-American Austin transplant goes on a mission to find the platonic love of her life after realizing she\u2019s never had one lasting female friend, but will have to figure out how to befriend herself first.

Meghan Ross<\/strong> is a writer\/director\/future BFF based in Austin. Her shorts were featured in The New Yorker\u2019s Best Shouts of 2020 and nominated for The Webby Awards 2021. Her writing\u2019s appeared in Reductress, VICE’s Broadly, TV Without Pity, The Toast, and other defunct but beloved sites.
