{"id":147,"date":"2013-02-27T23:54:41","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T21:54:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/?p=147"},"modified":"2013-02-27T23:54:41","modified_gmt":"2013-02-27T21:54:41","slug":"national-arts-festival-appointed-curators-of-sa-pavillion-at-55th-la-biennale-di-venezia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2013\/02\/27\/national-arts-festival-appointed-curators-of-sa-pavillion-at-55th-la-biennale-di-venezia\/","title":{"rendered":"National Arts Festival Appointed Curators Of SA Pavillion At 55th La Biennale di Venezia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">The National Arts Festival, Grahamstown today expressed its delight<br \/>\nat being chosen to curate and stage the South African exhibition at the<br \/>\n<em>55<sup>th<\/sup><\/em> <em>La Biennale di Venezia<\/em>, saying that it would embark on the project with the best interests of our country\u2019s artists at heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">Acknowledging this event as the \u201cworld\u2019s premiere showcase for the<br \/>\ncontemporary visual arts\u201d, Festival CEO Tony Lankester said that participation in the La Biennale di Venezia was something that all artists should aspire to. \u201cVenice is arguably the most prestigious and well-established visual arts showcase in the world, and having their work shown there is a major opportunity for our artists to get global exposure,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The choice of the National Arts Festival as curator was announced<br \/>\nby the Department of Arts and Culture today at the end of a public process in which proposals were sought from parties wishing to lead the process.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">\u201cWe submitted a proposal to the Department and we\u2019re delighted that they have bought into the curatorial vision we expressed,\u201d Lankester said. \u201cIn putting the proposal together we drew on the expertise of Brenton Maart, who will be the exhibition curator, and his colleagues from our Festival Artistic Committee \u2013 Nomusa Makhubu, Dominic Thorburn, Brett Bailey and Jay Pather.<br \/>\nTogether this team will now refine the idea behind the exhibition, and bring it to life through the work of an array of local artists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">The theme and concepts underpinning the exhibition to be mounted on the South African pavilion will be unveiled to the public once this process of refinement is complete.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">Lankester, who is currently chair of the World Fringe Alliance and<br \/>\nTreasurer of the African Festival Network, stressed the importance of global exposure for South Africa\u2019s artists: \u201cA platform like this is an important part of their growth as makers of art, and it enriches the perspective they bring to their work. It is also a step toward establishing their names and reputations in the global arts market and getting due recognition and reward for their talent,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">The 55th International Art Exhibition will take place in Venice<br \/>\nfrom 1 June to 24 November 2013.
