Melanie Lynsky (Don\u2019t Look Up<\/em>) won Best Actress: Drama at the 2022 Critics\u2019 Choice and Best Actress: Horror at the 2022 Critics\u2019 Choice Super Awards for her performance as the unassuming Shauna, a now-adult survivor of a plane crash that stranded her wildly talented high school girls\u2019 soccer team deep in the Canadian wilderness in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As her former teammates, Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers<\/em>) and Emmy nominee Christina Ricci (The Matrix Resurrections<\/em>) put in \u201ctheir best performances in years,\u201d according to The Guardian<\/em>, which proclaimed Yellowjackets<\/em> \u201cthe most fun TV show in forever.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among their uncannily spot-on younger counterparts, Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream<\/em>, The Leftovers<\/em>, For the People<\/em>), who plays the teenage Taissa, was nominated for Best TV Performance at the 2022 Queerties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0ensemble cast also includes multi-award-winner Tawny Cypress (The Blacklist: Redemption<\/em>), Ella Purnell (Jinx in Arcane<\/em>), and Sophie N\u00e9lisse (The Book Thief<\/em>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, Yellowjackets<\/em> has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes<\/em> and became the second most-streamed series in Showtime’s history (topped only by Dexter: New Blood<\/em>). Yellowjackets <\/em>was also nominated for both Best Drama Series and Best New Series at the 2022 Writers Guild of America Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yellowjackets\u2019<\/em> impressive directorial line-up includes the likes of Sundance winners Karyn Kusama (Girlfight<\/em>) and Ariel Kleinman (Top of the Lake<\/em>), SXSW winner Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project<\/em>) and multi-award-winner Deepa Mehta (the Oscar-nominated Water<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn both its flashbacks to the team\u2019s desolate hell on earth and the almost bleaker present, Yellowjackets<\/em> presents realities so taut with tension they seem likely to snap at any given moment,\u201d Variety<\/em> says, warning, \u200b\u201cDon’t be fooled by its teen show trappings: Yellowjackets<\/em> is a pitch black parable of human desperation that will creep its way under your skin given the chance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yellowjackets<\/em> has drawn comparisons to Lord of the Flies<\/em>, Lost<\/em>, Desperate Housewives<\/em> and even Mean Girls<\/em>, but creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson were most influenced by the ordeal endured by the survivors of the real-life 1972 Andes flight disaster (which also inspired the films Alive<\/em> and The Donner Party<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes it surprisingly relatable right now, in the third year of a global pandemic. In an interview with The Guardian, <\/em>speaking about the show\u2019s success, Lynsky says, \u201cI wonder if we\u2019ve all just gone through this collective trauma and everyone\u2019s feeling a bit shaken up and they don\u2019t really know how to put the pieces back together. This plane crash and these people surviving \u2013 I feel like people are interested in that. I think people can relate to that kind of general feeling right now. But,\u201d she adds, \u201cI also just think it\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Cypress says, \u201cYou are in for a wild ride, so buckle up. It\u2019s going to be crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One tip though – if you\u2019re loving the mystery, stay off the web. The show\u2019s renewal for a second season (yes, please!) has the internet buzzing again, and fan theories, post-mortems and spoilers are everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
