The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that its Board of Governors voted to present Honorary Awards to Euzhan Palcy<\/strong>, Diane Warren<\/strong> and Peter Weir<\/strong>, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Michael J. Fox<\/strong>.\u00a0 The four Oscar\u00ae statuettes will be presented at the Academy\u2019s 13th Governors Awards on Saturday, November 19, 2022, in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThe Academy\u2019s Board of Governors is honored to recognize four individuals who have made indelible contributions to cinema and the world at large,\u201d said Academy President David Rubin.\u00a0 \u201cMichael J. Fox\u2019s tireless advocacy of research on Parkinson\u2019s disease alongside his boundless optimism exemplifies the impact of one person in changing the future for millions.\u00a0 Euzhan Palcy is a pioneering filmmaker whose groundbreaking significance in international cinema is cemented in film history.\u00a0 Diane Warren\u2019s music and lyrics have magnified the emotional impact of countless motion pictures and inspired generations of musical artists.\u00a0 Peter Weir is a director of consummate skill and artistry whose work reminds us of the power of film to reveal the full range of human experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox gained fame playing Alex P. Keaton on the sitcom \u201cFamily Ties.\u201d\u00a0 His hit films include \u201cBack to the Future,\u201d \u201cThe Secret of My Success,\u201d \u201cCasualties of War,\u201d \u201cDoc Hollywood\u201d and \u201cThe American President.\u201d\u00a0 He returned to television in his award-winning lead role on \u201cSpin City,\u201d followed by guest appearances in series including \u201cRescue Me,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife\u201d and \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm.\u201d\u00a0 His many awards include five Emmys, four Golden Globes, one Grammy, two Screen Actors Guild awards, a People\u2019s Choice award, and GQ Man of the Year.\u00a0 In 2000, he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson\u2019s Research<\/a>, which is now the leading Parkinson\u2019s organization in the world.\u00a0 He is the author of four New York Times<\/em> bestselling books: Lucky Man<\/em>, Always Looking Up<\/em>, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future<\/em> and No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality<\/em>.\u00a0 Fox is the subject of a documentary from Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim, which is currently in production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palcy is a writer, director and producer born in Martinique in the French West Indies. Her first feature film, \u201cSugar Cane Alley,\u201d won the Silver Lion at the 1983 Venice Film Festival, a first for a Black director.\u00a0 It went on to win a C\u00e9sar Award for Best First Work, the first C\u00e9sar won by a woman director and by a Black filmmaker.\u00a0 She continued her journey with \u201cA Dry White Season\u201d (1989), a drama made at the height of apartheid, becoming the first Black woman to direct a film for a major Hollywood studio and guiding Marlon Brando to his last Oscar nomination. Her films also include the musical fairytale \u201cSim\u00e9on.\u201d\u00a0 Palcy\u2019s work has been an inspiration to filmmakers, contemporary artists and novelists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warren is one of the most prolific contemporary songwriters and has written original songs for more than 100 films.\u00a0 She has earned 13 Oscar nominations in the Original Song category, starting in 1987 and within each of the past five decades, for songs including \u201cNothing\u2019s Gonna Stop Us Now,\u201d \u201cBecause You Loved Me,\u201d \u201cHow Do I Live,\u201d \u201cI Don\u2019t Want To Miss A Thing,\u201d \u201cTil It Happens To You\u201d and \u201cStand Up for Something.\u201d\u00a0 She has collaborated with such prominent music artists as Beyonc\u00e9, Cher, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson, Lady Gaga, John Legend, Reba McEntire and Carlos Santana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A leading figure in the Australian New Wave film movement in the 1970s, Weir emerged as a visionary filmmaker with \u201cPicnic at Hanging Rock\u201d and \u201cThe Last Wave.\u201d\u00a0 He earned Oscar nominations for Directing for \u201cWitness,\u201d \u201cDead Poets Society,\u201d \u201cThe Truman Show\u201d and \u201cMaster and Commander: The Far Side of the World,\u201d for which he also received a Best Picture nomination, and earned a Writing nomination for \u201cGreen Card.\u201d\u00a0 His other notable films include \u201cThe Way Back,\u201d \u201cFearless,\u201d \u201cThe Mosquito Coast,\u201d \u201cThe Year of Living Dangerously\u201d and \u201cGallipoli.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given \u201cto honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, is given \u201cto an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
