{"id":17004,"date":"2022-09-15T15:26:39","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T13:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/?p=17004"},"modified":"2022-09-15T15:26:40","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T13:26:40","slug":"why-emmy-nominated-drama-the-staircase-may-be-the-true-crime-series-to-end-them-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2022\/09\/15\/why-emmy-nominated-drama-the-staircase-may-be-the-true-crime-series-to-end-them-all\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Emmy-nominated drama The Staircase may be \u201cthe true-crime series to end them all\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Showmax_black.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Showmax_black.jpg?w=750&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3061\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Oscar winner Colin Firth (<em>The King\u2019s Speech<\/em>) and Oscar nominee Toni Collette (<em>Unbelievable<\/em>, <em>The Sixth Sense<\/em>) were nominated for Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Limited Series at this year\u2019s Emmys for the acclaimed true-crime series <em>The Staircase<\/em>, now streaming on Showmax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by real events, the eight-part mini-series tells the story of Michael Peterson, a crime novelist who was accused of killing his wife Kathleen after she was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in their home in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Staircase_The_2022.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Staircase_The_2022.jpg?resize=500%2C333&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Screen grab of Toni Collette and Colin Firth - The Staircase.\" class=\"wp-image-17005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Staircase_The_2022.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Staircase_The_2022.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Toni Collette and Colin Firth &#8211; The Staircase<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Widely publicised over the course of the 16-year judicial battle that followed, the Petersons\u2019 story has already been the subject of a Peabody Award-winning docuseries of the same name &#8211; which also becomes part of the new series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the makers of the original documentary have criticised aspects of the show, it\u2019s received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. <em>The Staircase <\/em>was one of the Most Anticipated Series of 2022 on <em>Rotten Tomatoes<\/em>, where it has a 93% critics\u2019 rating. <em>Variety<\/em> praises it as \u201ca fascinating look at guilt, innocence and image,\u201d while <em>The Guardian<\/em> hails it as \u201criveting\u2026 practically fizzing with tension\u2026 If you didn\u2019t know it was true, you wouldn\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to its leads, the mini-series boasts a star-studded cast that includes Oscar winner Juliette Binoche (<em>Chocolat<\/em>), Emmy nominees Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark in <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>) and Michael Stuhlbarg (<em>Boardwalk Empire<\/em>), Teen Choice nominee Patrick Schwarzenegger (<em>Midnight Sun<\/em>), MTV Movie &amp; TV Award nominee Parker Posey (<em>Scream 3<\/em>), BAFTA nominee Dane DeHaan (<em>ZeroZeroZero<\/em>), Olivia DeJonge (Priscilla in <em>Elvis<\/em>) and Cullen Moss (<em>The Righteous Gemstones<\/em>, <em>Your Honor<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you know the story, you <em>don\u2019t<\/em> know the story. Rather than shy away from the unresolved questions and inconsistencies, <em>The Staircase<\/em> approaches the case from multiple perspectives, including one of the more bizarre theories around the case, which contends that an owl attack could have precipitated Kathleen\u2019s fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo much of it is like, \u2018What?!\u2019\u201d says Collette. \u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of the show. You\u2019re constantly guessing, and you fully believe in a certain idea, and then the ground falls away and you\u2019re left wondering how you could have been so foolish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By coming at the story from multiple angles, the show invites the audience into the investigation, but that\u2019s not the only way <em>The Staircase<\/em> goes beyond a straight-up dramatisation of the newsreels. \u201cThis nonlinear reexamination,\u201d <em>AV Club<\/em> says, \u201cis as much about a possible murder as it is society\u2019s insidious fascination with horrible tragedies.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its core a family drama, the series also looks at what happens to that family\u2019s story when it goes out into the world, not only during the court case, but also through the lens of the documentary team following their story.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In doing so, <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> argues, \u201c<em>The Staircase<\/em> may be the truest crime series we\u2019ve got.\u201d Calling it, \u201cthe true-crime series to end them all,\u201d they praise the show\u2019s \u201cwillingness to question and doubt\u2014and to guide its audience into this mode of investigation and introspection\u2014that elevates <em>The Staircase<\/em> above many of its based-on-a-real-case television brethren.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe mystery,\u201d Firth told<em> TV Insider<\/em>, \u201cfor me \u2013 and I think it\u2019s full of mystery and twists and turns and unpredictability\u00a0\u2013 wasn\u2019t dependent on the whodunnit.
