Produced by Nagvlug Films (<em>Skemerdans, Barakat<\/em>),\u00a0<em>Donkerbos<\/em>\u00a0premieres on Showmax on 29 November 2022, with new episodes every Tuesday until 17 January 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"It&#039;s strangely quiet in this small town... | Donkerbos Trailer | Showmax Original\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gYSzvvUds2o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the bodies of six children are found in the backwater forests of Donkerbos, Limpopo, an ostracised detective (multi-award-winner Erica Wessels from&nbsp;<em>Dwaalster<\/em>&nbsp;and<em>&nbsp;i am ALL GIRLS<\/em>) must wrestle with her dark past, her family and a distrustful community to catch the killer before another child is taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The star-studded cast includes SAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award winner Thoko Ntshinga (<em>The River<\/em>), Fleur du Cap winners Sanda Shandu (<em>Skemerdans<\/em>) and Nicole Holm (<em>Fynskrif<\/em>), Silwerskermfees winners Stian Bam (<em>The Story of Racheltjie de Beer<\/em>), Jacques Bessenger (<em>Fynskrif<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Warrior<\/em>), Aphiwe Sithole (<em>Poppie Nongena<\/em>), Carel Nel (<em>Gaia<\/em>) and Rolanda Marais (<em>Trackers<\/em>), multi-award winners Wilhelm van der Walt (<em>Fynskrif)<\/em>\u00a0and Leandie Du Randt (<em>Vuil Wasgoed<\/em>), SAFTA nominee Nicola Hanekom (<em>Faan se Trein<\/em>) and 2022 Young Artist Academy<sup>TM<\/sup>\u00a0Award winner Caleb Payne (<em>Good Life<\/em>), as well as\u00a0Silwerskermfees Best Actor nominee\u00a0Edwin van der Walt (<em>Wonderlus<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q&amp;A With Erica Wessels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We caught up with Wessels to find out more about the Afrikaans-English-Venda crime series, which she calls both \u201cthe best thing I\u2019ve ever read in Afrikaans\u201d and \u201cthe darkest thing I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Why did you want this role?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&nbsp;<em>really<\/em>&nbsp;wanted this role. Really, really, really. It rarely happens that you audition for something and want the role so badly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the reason for that was the screenplay. I always wanted to work with Nico [Scheepers, writer and director]. But when I read those texts I was just like, &#8216;Oh my goodness, I want this!&#8217; It&#8217;s really the best thing I&#8217;ve ever read in Afrikaans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>That\u2019s high praise. What impressed you so much about the script?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The text is so well written. And it\u2019s awfully dark. It&#8217;s the darkest thing I&#8217;ve ever done.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I liked most about the scripts is not only that it is dark or the incredible characters and beautiful storyline; what was very interesting for me is that it is a thriller, but still I got so emotional.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I cried terribly while reading the screenplays. I asked myself why I was crying like that. What is it about Nico&#8217;s writing style that makes me cry so much? And then I just realised: sometimes you can&#8217;t pinpoint it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do think it&#8217;s partly because it&#8217;s about children, children who get hurt, and I&#8217;m a mother. Children are the most vulnerable in our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Tell us about your character, Fanie.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is a great character. She is extremely good at what she does. She is strong and abrupt and difficult, but she commands respect. She hates injustice. She is actually an incredibly good person, but under this brash, hard exterior of getting shit done. I love her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days there are numerous stories with women in the lead role as a flawed protagonist; it\u2019s fantastic. Funnily enough, a lot of the roles I&#8217;ve always gotten are pretty much that type.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I really like about Fanie is that she is very different from me. Yes, very, very different from me. For some reason I&#8217;m always cast as a Hawk, or a policewoman but I&#8217;m actually the opposite of the characters I play. My friends who know me well laugh their asses off, because I&#8217;m actually very feminine and I would never buy a firearm, for example. I&#8217;m an empath. I&#8217;m soft-soft-soft-soft, but strong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Fanie comes from another world, and I am delighted to take on such characters, who are completely different from me. It allows me to discover a whole new world inside someone else, which is what I love and why I act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What have you enjoyed about playing Fanie?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, even if you are a strong female character, or a protagonist that happens to be female, there is often a reasonable focus on glamour, on beauty, the exterior. This is probably just one of the languages \u200b\u200bthrough which we are validated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s really cool about Fanie for me is that there is not that focus, which I dig. For&nbsp;<em>Donkerbos<\/em>, I basically don&#8217;t wear any makeup; I look like a bum every day. Wrinkles and pimples and no nails and all that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is something very nauseating to me about this obsession with being ageless and what it means to be a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Why should audiences watch\u00a0Donkerbos?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think people are drawn to good writing and good storytelling. Watching\u00a0<em>Donkerbos<\/em>, you\u2019re going to want to know who the murderer is, and you\u2019re going to want them stopped before another child dies, and it\u2019s going to keep you guessing til the end. But it\u2019s more than just a whodunnit; it\u2019s a whydunnit too, which will make you feel empathy in ways you don\u2019t expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you wait for\u00a0<em>Donkerbos\u00a0<\/em>to premiere on 29 November 2022, binge Scheepers and Nagvlug Films\u2019 critically acclaimed series,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/tvseries\/ncv91xkm-nerens-noord-kaap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>N\u00earens<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Noord-Kaap<\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>on Showmax.
