\u201cAs a student, I took a room at a digs not far from what was then the Rand Afrikaans University where I lived in raucous, care-free splendour for a year. It was a large house with, as I recall, six or seven bedrooms, a kitchen overflowing with dirty crockery, and a lounge overflowing with \u2013 you guessed it – dirty crockery. Good neighbours we were not, which is why I have some sympathy for the students in Bloem. I say \u201csome\u201d because, unlike our noisy compound in Aukland Park, something else is at play in the City of Roses. Stealing from the Disabled<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In December 2015, investigative journalist, Sabelo Skiti, stumbled upon a story about a well-known lawyer in the Eastern Cape claiming to be fighting the good fight for children born with disabilities in the province\u2019s poorer communities. He was helping them take the Department of Health to court for medical negligence with the multi-million-rand pay-outs offering a chance of a better life. Trouble was the lawyer was stealing the money meant for the mostly semi-literate mothers of children living with cerebral palsy. Greedy and unrepentant, he exploited their desperation without ever intending for them to see a cent of their pay-outs. Skiti\u2019s story prompted the Special Investigating Unit to take a closer look and yet, seven years later, the rogue lawyer continues to slither from their clutches. Sim Tiger<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It began as a little boy’s curious fascination with videos he found on YouTube. But three-year-old Simthandile \u201cSim\u201d Tshabalala wasn\u2019t interested in cartoons or anime. He was spending his playtime obsessively watching golf. By four years old, his father, Bongani took action to help his son develop this interest for the game. It soon became clear that Sim had a golf swing that was well beyond his years. Now 11 years old, the golf prodigy has won multiple trophies. In 2020, he came second in his age group at the prestigious Australian Open. Now he has his sights set on following in the footsteps of his idol, Tiger Woods, to master the 18 holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
