Open Horizons Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, celebrating 25 years this year, announced its JOMBA! <strong>Open Horizons<\/strong> \u201cpick of the platform\u201d awards for 2023 on Sunday 3September. The programme was screened on the festival\u2019s YouTube Channel and remains available for the remainder of the festival until 10 September here:\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/jomba_dance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.youtube.com\/jomba_dance<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform encourages submissions from dance-makers across Africa and South Africa and has been a platform for artists, new and established, to create and develop new and original work for participation on JOMBA!\u2019s international stage.&nbsp; Through an open call for submissions of work between 3 \u2013 8min in length which are then vetted by an independent jury, JOMBA!\u2019s Open Horizons platform offers a smorgasbord of new works across a variety of themes showcasing emerging and established voices for local and international audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following jury deliberations around the submissions received for 2023, six dance films were selected for inclusion on our Open Horizons platform, showcasing work from across South Africa and also including a work from Kenya.&nbsp; The works offer a diverse range of dance styles, forms and themes made for digital engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three of the six dance-films were selected for \u201cpick-of-the-platform\u201d awards with Cape Town\u2019s Oscar O\u2019Ryan taking top honours and a monetary prize of R3000 for their <strong>NOT FROM HERE<\/strong> described by the artist as \u201can ode to the unique South African Karoo landscape\u201d.\u00a0 Juror Tracey Saunders applauded the work for its \u201cexquisite styling and sense of place\u201d while fellow juror Shanelle Jewnarain commended the film\u2019s expert crafting where \u201cconcept meets execution perfectly!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/OscarO_Ryan.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"177\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/OscarO_Ryan.jpg?resize=450%2C177&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/OscarO_Ryan.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/OscarO_Ryan.jpg?resize=300%2C118&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Oscar O\u2019Ryan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Taking second place with its R2000 award is Kenyan Maulid Owino\u2019s work <strong>When time stops<\/strong>. Owino who is founder and artistic director of Dance Unites is no stranger to the platform, having had his work screened as part of the 2021 iteration of JOMBA! Kabulu who is no stranger to Durban\u2019s stages and screens offers a work that he says explores \u201cthe pursuit of liberation, healing, and the ultimate freedom to live in the present moment\u201d.\u00a0 Juror David April commented on the expressiveness of Kabulu\u2019s performance in lending itself to the articulated narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/TshedisoKabulu.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"237\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/TshedisoKabulu.jpg?resize=450%2C237&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/TshedisoKabulu.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/TshedisoKabulu.jpg?resize=300%2C158&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tshediso Kabulu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Also included on the programme are Cape Town-based Kamogelo Dooka\u2019s thoughtful <strong>The Tormented Crown<\/strong> alongside sister Capetonian Zandile Salukazana\u2019s evocative <strong>Wake Up<\/strong> and Bloemfontein\u2019s inimitable Thamsanqa Majela who offers his emotive <strong>IN SANE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Festival offers a range of workshops, residencies, talks and performances and runs until 10 September.
