Showmax Original series Unfollowed takes us to meet South African stars who are wrestling with life after social media death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Unfollowed episode 8, the season finale, the sunglasses stay on as host Thembekile Mrototo questions former child star, singer and Uyajola 9\/9 presenter Molemo Katleho \u201cJub Jub\u201d Maarohanye about how he keeps coming back \u2013 even after the incident in which he and a friend killed four schoolchildren in March 2010, four years in prison, and an ongoing rape trial.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jub-jub.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jub-jub.jpg?resize=450%2C253&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jub-jub.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jub-jub.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jub-Jub &#8211; Screenshot from Unfollowed<br \/>(photo: provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cEverything was taken away in the blink of an eye\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jub Jub is tight lipped about the deadly 2010 accident, \u201cout of respect for the families that lost their kids\u2026What happens with myself and the families is not for anybody,\u201d he insists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything was taken away in the blink of an eye from having the accident,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noting how his words distance Jub Jub from his actions, Thembekile asks, \u201cTaken away by yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot really, I guess the choices,\u201d says Jub Jub, who wishes he had \u201ctaken a stop in my life and actually figured out there&#8217;s no need to live a fast life.\u201d The accident lingers as his \u201cdarkest day\u201d. He explains, \u201cA good part of me died as well \u2026 When you find yourself alone, you just remember \u2026 you try to sleep, you see visions. You try to move on with your life when you are reminded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI regret all my actions \u2013 the accident \u2013 I don&#8217;t regret going to prison.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jub Jub claims that his time in prison made him a better person. \u201cPrison is the only place that actually forced me to be alone, to reconnect with God, amadlozi (ancestors), no matter what. Because the life that I was living, man, I had no time for what my ancestors were wanting me to do; I had no time with God \u2026 I regret all my actions \u2013 the accident \u2013 I don&#8217;t regret going into prison \u2026 because there&#8217;s a life lesson that I learned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIf somebody had raped my family member, I&#8217;m telling you now, I would not wait for the justice system.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jub Jub is currently out on bail, facing three counts of rape, two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault, brought by four different accusers, after high profile women including actress Amanda du-Pont, Refilwe Khumalo, and Masechaba Khumalo (then Ndlovu), went public online with accusations of violent sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe live in a society where rape is a pandemic, and it is sad how now guys are not scared of guns, not scared of knives, but we\u2019re scared of just waking up being accused, you know?,\u201d Jub Jub says sincerely. \u201cRight now we\u2019re just shielding from every woman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thembekile digs down into Jub Jub\u2019s views on who, exactly, the justice system is failing, and why he\u2019s choosing to focus on a minority of falsely accused men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when pressed, Jub Jub claims, \u201cIf you know that somebody was raped, if somebody has raped my family member, I&#8217;m telling you now, I would not wait for the justice system. I know what I would do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Unfollowed, Jub Jub also talks about life in prison, why he considers his misogynistic banter on MacGyver &#8220;MacG&#8221; Mukwevho\u2019s podcast in December 2021 \u201cvery pure, very light,\u201d and he speculates about what drives people to participate in cancel culture. And media experts comment not only on how you re-brand celebrities who\u2019ve done the unforgivable, but why the public seems so eager to forgive when they are entertained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Unfollowed<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Nomsa Philiso, CEO of MultiChoice&#8217;s general entertainment division, describes Unfollowed as an opportunity for us to reflect on cancel culture and its place in pop culture \u2013 a chance to interrogate whether it\u2019s the best way to deal with people who have been deemed problematic.
