But ours is a country struggling with a near-dormant economy, and it would be foolish to turn up our noses up at the chance of earning some much-needed foreign cash. So, our thoughts on the Houthis and their low-level war on international trade aside, pragmatism dictates that we seize the chance of benefitting from a dramatic increase in ships passing our coast. But, it seems, whatever pragmatism dictates, Transnet casts asunder– John Webb, Executive Producer

A Mother’s Betrayal

At just two-years-old, Chevonne Rusch had endured a difficult upbringing. Throughout her short life, the little girl and her siblings were violently abused and neglected. Friends and neighbours repeatedly reported the abuse to the police and to authorities but no one acted. Then she was brutally murdered. It’s a tragic story, but our investigation shows that Chevonne’s death could’ve been prevented had authorities taken action. Instead, their inaction coincided with an escalation in the abuse and, in the end, a tragic loss of life. Carte Blanche investigates how the state, as custodians of vulnerable children, continues to fail them.

Producer: Anina Peens | Presenter: Erin Bates

https://youtu.be/PNp9KmuEIug

Shipping Shambles

War is brewing in the Red Sea as Yemen’s Houthi rebel forces launch attacks on commercial ships in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza. For multinational companies trading and shipping between Asia and Europe, the Suez Canal has now become a high-risk zone. This hostile disruption in world trade has created an opportunity for South Africa to boost its own flagging economy by offering services to ships re-routed past the Cape. It is an extraordinary detour, with hundreds of ships sailing for an extra 10 to 14 days to ensure safe passage through calmer African waters. But these ships appear to be giving South Africa a wide berth, preferring more efficient refuelling stops in Namibia and Mozambique. Why was Transnet so ill-prepared to take advantage of this potential economic windfall?

Producer: Nicky Troll | Presenter: Govan Whittles

https://youtu.be/Qy1WL8vUF6U

Matrics in Antarctica

Hailing from Mncuncuzo – a village in the Eastern Cape – matriculant Sibahle Fetile has always loved science.
