At the kykNET Silwerskerm Festival in Cape Town, Showmax announced they\u2019ve put a second season of\u00a0Koek<\/em>\u00a0[Cake<\/em>] in the oven. Season 1 has been one of the ten most-streamed Afrikaans series on the African streamer since its relaunch in February 2024 in partnership with Comcast\u2019s NBCUniversal and Sky.<\/p>\n\n\n

At this Saturday\u2019s kykNET Silwerskerm Film and TV Awards, the Afrikaans series is up for six prizes, the most of any drama series: Best Actress (Cindy Swanepoel), Actor (Stian Bam and Jacques Bessenger), Supporting Actress (Sandra Prinsloo and Llandi Beeslaar) and Supporting Actor (Dawid Minnaar).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Cape Town housewife Christelle Smit discovers evidence her husband is having an affair with a stripper named Candi Floss, her investigation takes her to a world poles apart from the suburban utopia she knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swanepoel, who won South African Film and Television and Silwerskerm awards last year as Annelize in Binnelanders<\/em>, stars as Christelle, with screen legend Prinsloo (The Gods Must Be Crazy<\/em>) as the brandy-drinking, cigar-smoking, leopard-print loving, kidney-stealing mob boss and strip club owner she\u2019s soon in debt to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by SAFTA and Silwerskerm-winning showrunner Christiaan Olwagen (Kanarie<\/em>, Recipes for Love & Murder)<\/em>, the R18 DLNSV Showmax Original is directed and filmed by SAFTA and Silwerskerm -winning director and cinematographer Johannes Pieter Nel, hailed as \u201cone of South Africa’s most promising young talents\u201d in Leon van Nierop\u2019s rave review in Rapport<\/em>. Wolflight Films is the production company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is such an honour to revisit this character and have another season,\u201d she continues. \u201cChristelle now? She\u2019s edgy, she\u2019s dangerous, she\u2019s hardcore. Don\u2019t mess with her; she\u2019s been through a lot. But she\u2019s also vulnerable; what she did in Season 1 is hectic; it\u2019s not just something one does. There will also be a lot of comical elements meeting the serious elements. That\u2019s the kind of storytelling I love to do and I can\u2019t wait to play her and see where she is now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
