Actors Joel Edgerton, Lucy Liu, Daisy Ridley and Parker Sawyers will be presenters at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\u2019 43rd Student Academy Awards\u00ae<\/a> on Thursday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The awards ceremony caps a week of industry activities for the 17 winning student filmmakers from the U.S. and abroad.<\/p>\n

Edgerton is an Australian actor whose films include \u201cKinky Boots\u201d (2005), \u201cAnimal Kingdom\u201d (2010), \u201cZero Dark Thirty\u201d (2012), \u201cThe Great Gatsby\u201d (2013) and \u201cBlack Mass\u201d (2015). He will next be seen in \u201cLoving,\u201d to be released in November. In 2015 he wrote, produced, directed and starred in the psychological thriller \u201cThe Gift,\u201d which earned him a Directors Guild of America nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement by a First-Time Feature Film Director.<\/p>\n

A native New Yorker, Liu currently co-stars on the drama series \u201cElementary\u201d on CBS. Her film credits include \u201cCharlie\u2019s Angels\u201d (2000), \u201cChicago\u201d (2002), \u201cCharlie\u2019s Angels: Full Throttle\u201d (2003), \u201cKill Bill \u2013 Vol. 1\u201d (2003) and the \u201cKung Fu Panda\u201d series of animated films. In 2008 she produced and narrated the documentary short \u201cThe Road to Traffick,\u201d followed by the feature-length documentary \u201cRedlight\u201d (2010). Liu made her directorial debut with the narrative short \u201cMeena,\u201d based on the true story of sexual slavery survivor Meena Haseena, which premiered in New York City in 2014.<\/p>\n

English actress Ridley is best known for her breakthrough role as Rey in \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d (2015). She has since voiced the lead role of Taeko in the 25th anniversary re-release of Studio Ghibli\u2019s classic animated film \u201cOnly Yesterday,\u201d which opened earlier this year. She also served as an executive producer and narrator on the documentary \u201cThe Eagle Huntress,\u201d which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and is being released this October. Ridley\u2019s upcoming projects include Episode VIII of \u201cStar Wars,\u201d which will be released in December 2017, and the supernatural drama \u201cKolma\u201d from director Marielle Heller.<\/p>\n

Sawyers, a native of Indianapolis, began his career with the Helen Wells Agency as a model and commercial actor. After being cast in such notable features as \u201cHyde Park on Hudson\u201d (2012) and \u201cZero Dark Thirty\u201d (2012), Sawyers landed his first lead role, as Barack Obama in the recently released \u201cSouthside with You\u201d (2016). He can be seen in several upcoming features, including \u201cSnowden,\u201d directed by Oliver Stone, \u201cThe Autopsy of Jane Doe\u201d and \u201cMegan Leavey.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year the Foreign Film category was expanded to include separate awards for narrative, animation and documentary entries. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal awards will be given in the Foreign Narrative category; Gold Medal awards will be given in the Foreign Animation and the Foreign Documentary categories. The U.S. competition categories remain the same: Alternative, Animation, Narrative and Documentary. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal awards will be given in each.<\/p>\n

The 43rd Student Academy Awards ceremony on September 22 is free and open to the public, but advance tickets are required. Tickets may be obtained online at oscars.org<\/a>. Any remaining tickets will be made available at the door on the evening of the event. The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n
