{"id":22939,"date":"2024-09-11T16:57:18","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T14:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/?p=22939"},"modified":"2024-09-11T16:57:25","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T14:57:25","slug":"multichoice-takes-african-stories-to-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/09\/11\/multichoice-takes-african-stories-to-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"MultiChoice Takes African Stories to the World"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the opening speech at MIPAfrica this morning, Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice Group, confirmed that more African films and TV series are being broadcast globally than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a good chance that Africa\u2019s film industry is about to have its own global moment,\u201d says Philiso. \u201cWe\u2019ve already seen that happen with Afrobeats, Amapiano and African music as a whole.\u201d\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philiso cited a string of breakthroughs for African content last year. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story<\/em> won the Audience Award at Tribeca<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Two Sides<\/em> was nominated as Best Sports Documentary at the iEmmys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/01\/25\/first-look-trailer-charlotte-hope-as-micki-pistorius-south-africas-first-serial-killer-profiler\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/01\/25\/first-look-trailer-charlotte-hope-as-micki-pistorius-south-africas-first-serial-killer-profiler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catch Me A Killer<\/a><\/em> became the first South African series in competition at Series Mania and won a British Production Designer\u2019s Guild award<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/01\/25\/trailer-debut-showmaxs-university-drama-wyfie-launches-in-february-2024\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/01\/25\/trailer-debut-showmaxs-university-drama-wyfie-launches-in-february-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wyfie<\/a><\/em> was nominated at the Global Production Awards and for Best TV Series at Seoul<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/06\/29\/spinners-beats-succession-in-shanghai\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/06\/29\/spinners-beats-succession-in-shanghai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spinners<\/a><\/em> became the first African series at Canneseries and beat the Emmy-winning final season of <em>Succession <\/em>to be named Best Foreign Series at Shanghai&#8217;s Magnolia Awards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>MultiChoice has also been taking African stories to the world through their sales arm, MultiChoice Studios, and partnerships with distributors like Abacus, AMC, Fremantle, StudioCanal and The Exchange, who are repping MIPAfrica\u2019s opening film, <em>The Fix<\/em>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After <em>Reyka, &nbsp;<\/em>Serena Cullen Productions and Quizzical Pictures series opened the Monte-Carlo Television Festival and earned International Emmy nominations for Best Drama and Best Actress for Kim Engelbrecht in 2022, Fremantle sold the first series of the crime drama to over 150 territories, including BritBox North America, CANAL+, Channel4 (UK), HBO LatAm, and Sky Italia. Launched in February 2024, Season 2 moves the crime scenes from the cane fields to the Durban harbour, the largest port in Africa, with Fremantle again securing multiple sales. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many more examples:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/05\/23\/sorisha-naidoo-on-the-real-housewives-of-durban-s4-reunion\/#google_vignette\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2024\/05\/23\/sorisha-naidoo-on-the-real-housewives-of-durban-s4-reunion\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Real Housewives of Durban<\/a> <\/em>has now screened on the likes of hayu, Peacock and Bravo, the original home of the franchise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In January 2024, <em>Devil\u2019s Peak<\/em> sold to Tubi for North America<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In February 2024, Abacus sold <em>Catch Me A Killer<\/em> to the likes of Britbox North America, UKTV and SBS Australia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In May 2024, Fremantle sold <em>White Lies<\/em> to the likes of Sundance Now in North America, and most recently, Channel 4 (UK). This follows recent successful launches of the Natalie Dormer-led crime drama reaching #3 on STAN in Australia and recently adding Channel4 (UK)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In July, <em>Spinners <\/em>charted at #6 during its primetime run on CANAL+ in France, having also sold to the likes of Globo Brasil. Season 2 is currently in development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acorn TV has just sold Berlinale Series Market Selects title <em>Recipes for Love and Murder<\/em> to UKTV\u2019s Alibi Channel &#8211; with the murder mystery now available in 95 countries, including in Japan on the NHK-owned Mystery Channel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fPhiliso emphasised that while international reach is important, MultiChoice\u2019s primary goal remains producing content for its core audience across Africa.<em> <\/em>\u201cLike everyone else, Africans want to hear their own languages and see themselves reflected in what they watch,\u201d she says. \u201cOn Showmax, 9\/10 of the most watched shows since its relaunch in February have been local. It took a massive show like <em>House of the Dragon<\/em> to make a dent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MultiChoice is Africa\u2019s largest content producer, with a presence in 50 of Africa\u2019s 54 countries, telling stories in 45 languages. Recent highlights include <em>Shaka iLembe<\/em>, the most Googled TV series in South Africa last year, and <em>Big Brother Naija<\/em>, which generated 1.8 billion votes last year. East African content is also thriving, with Showmax Originals <em>Pepeta <\/em>and <em>The Real Housewives of Nairobi<\/em> taking home the Viewers\u2019 Choice and Best TV Show Kalasha awards respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MultiChoice is Africa\u2019s largest content producer, with a presence in 50 of Africa\u2019s 54 countries, telling stories in 45 languages.
