They both suffer in silence over the loss of Xoan, Ant\u00eda\u2019s father and Julieta\u2019s husband. On the day she turns eighteen, Ant\u00eda abandons her mother, without a word of explanation. Julieta, guilt-stricken, looks for her in every possible way, but all she discovers is how little she knows her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>sumptuous and heart-breaking, Julieta studies the nature of guilt, the mystery of memory and the often unendurable power of love. It talks about a mother\u2019s struggle to survive uncertainty. It also examines fate, guilt complexes and broken maternity.<\/p>\n<p>Making its international debut earlier this year at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival where it was in competition for the Palme d\u2019Or, Julieta has been described as Almod\u00f3var\u2019s most moving and entrancing work since his 2006 Oscar-nominated masterpiece Volver.<\/p>\n<p>Almod\u00f3var is an Academy darling, with two of his films having previously being awarded Oscar statuettes: All About My Mother for Best Foreign Language Film in 2000 and Talk To Her for Best Original Screenplay in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Julieta stars Emma Su\u00e1rez and Adriana Urgate as older and younger versions of the film\u2019s protagonist, Julieta, alongside Daniel Grao, Imna Cuesta, Dar\u00edo Grandinetti, Michelle Jenner and long-time Almod\u00f3var muse Rossy de Palma.<\/p>\n<p>Julieta releases in South Africa at select art-house cinemas on the 4th of November 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Julieta, written and directed by Pedro Almod\u00f3var, has officially been selected as Spain\u2019s submission for the category of &#8216;Best Foreign Language Film&#8217; at the 89th Academy Awards in 2017.
