The Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee announced the winners via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elabs13.com\/c.html?ufl=1&amp;rtr=on&amp;s=xahl0g,bd75,1nb,4rb9,aabx,2stt,23ss\" target=\"_blank\">Livestream<\/a> today. The fellows will each receive a $35,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Awards Presentation &amp; Live Read on Thursday, November 3, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. For the fourth consecutive year, an ensemble of actors will be reading selected scenes from the winning scripts.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 winners are (listed alphabetically by author):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michele Atkins, \u201cTalking About the Sky\u201d (Seattle, WA)<\/li>\n<li>Spencer Harvey and Lloyd Harvey, \u201cPhoto Booth\u201d (Balgowlah, Australia)<\/li>\n<li>Geeta Malik, \u201cDinner with Friends\u201d (Los Angeles, CA)<\/li>\n<li>Elizabeth Oyebode, \u201cTween the Ropes\u201d (Sunnyvale, CA)<\/li>\n<li>Justin Piasecki, \u201cDeath of an Ortolan\u201d (Los Angeles, CA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A total of 6,915 scripts were submitted for this year\u2019s competition. Eleven individual screenwriters and one writing team were selected for the shortlist. Their scripts were then read and judged by the Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee, who ultimately voted the winners.<\/p>\n<p>The other finalists are (listed alphabetically by author):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Josh Barkey, \u201cMarlene the Divine\u201d (Waxhaw, NC)<\/li>\n<li>Beanie Barnes, \u201cLittle Toro\u201d (New York, NY)<\/li>\n<li>Todd Condie, \u201cJohn Wayne Slept Here\u201d (Brooklyn, NY)<\/li>\n<li>Danielle Ownbey, \u201cThe Blast-Off Inn\u201d (Glendale, CA)<\/li>\n<li>Michael Toner, \u201cHey Jude\u201d (Van Nuys, CA)<\/li>\n<li>Arun K. Vir, \u201cSuburban Turban\u201d (Los Angeles, CA)<\/li>\n<li>Kirk Weddell, \u201cAlone\u201d (Wimbledon, England)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fellowships are awarded with the understanding that the recipients will each complete a feature-length screenplay during their fellowship year. The Academy acquires no rights to the works of Nicholl fellows and does not involve itself commercially in any way with their completed scripts.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee is chaired by writer Robin Swicord, and marketing executive Buffy Shutt serves as vice chair. The other members of the committee are writers Tina Gordon Chism, Naomi Foner, Eric Roth, Misan Sagay, Kirsten Smith and Tyger Williams; actor Eva Marie Saint; animation director Jennifer Yuh Nelson; cinematographer John Bailey; executives Marcus Hu and Bill Mechanic; and producers Stephanie Allain, Albert Berger, Julia Chasman, Julie Lynn, Peter Samuelson and Robert W. Shapiro.<\/p>\n<p>The global competition, which aims to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters, has awarded 147 fellowships since it began in 1986. In 2016 several past fellows added to their feature film and television credits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allison Anders directed two episodes of the ABC series \u201cMurder in the First.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Raymond De Felitta directed the ABC miniseries \u201cMadoff,\u201d which aired in February.<\/li>\n<li>Amy Garcia and Cecilia Contreras wrote \u201cDear Eleanor,\u201d which opened on VOD in July.<\/li>\n<li>Susannah Grant co-wrote \u201cThe 5th Wave,\u201d which opened theatrically in January, and wrote \u201cConfirmation,\u201d which aired on HBO in April.<\/li>\n<li>Anthony Jaswinski wrote \u201cThe Shallows\u201d and \u201cSatanic,\u201d which opened in theaters this summer.<\/li>\n<li>Creighton Rothenberger co-wrote \u201cLondon Has Fallen,\u201d which opened theatrically in March.<\/li>\n<li>Rebecca Sonnenshine concluded her five-season association with \u201cThe Vampire Diaries\u201d as a supervising producer and writer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tickets for the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Awards Presentation &amp; Live Read are now available at <a href=\"http:\/\/Oscars.org\/Events\" target=\"_blank\">Oscars.org\/Events<\/a>.
