Despite catching dozens of planes a year, I remain a nervous passenger. Not terrified, but irrationally distrustful of the structural integrity of what is essentially a composite tube hurtling through the air at close to the speed of sound. That disposition requires that I constantly remind myself of the skills of those tasked with getting us into the air and back on the ground. Now, the elephant once known as Charlie has been transformed by freedom. Today, he is Duma. Carte Blanche captured his release as tensions ran high at Pretoria Zoo a year ago. Now, he will end his days as a wild elephant. But Duma’s story is only a part of the picture. Even as he settles into his new home, another court battle has come to a head: the campaign to give the same freedom to three more elephants living in captivity at Johannesburg Zoo.

Producer: Joy Summers | Presenter: Claire Mawisa

Mayday!

A routine flight to Cape Town comes within minutes of disaster. Another aircraft runs into trouble on approach. And these are just two of four serious incidents in just a few years. Coincidence? Or a pattern of safety failures? Experts are asking serious questions about airline decision-making and incident reporting. Are transparency, accountability and passenger safety vanishing off the radar?

Producer: Mart-Marie Faure | Presenter: Masa Kekana

Care Capital

At first glance, there’s nothing to separate Worcester from any of the Western Cape’s other historic towns. It’s a theme that extends past the crossings built for the blind, and into a thriving small business. Here, one woman’s dream has become a lifeline for many.
