Eighty-five films had originally been considered in the category.<\/p>\n<p>The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Australia, \u201cTanna,\u201d Bentley Dean, Martin Butler, directors;<\/li>\n<li>Canada, \u201cIt\u2019s Only the End of the World,\u201d Xavier Dolan, director;<\/li>\n<li>Denmark, \u201cLand of Mine,\u201d Martin Zandvliet, director;<\/li>\n<li>Germany, \u201cToni Erdmann,\u201d Maren Ade, director;<\/li>\n<li>Iran, \u201cThe Salesman,\u201d Asghar Farhadi, director;<\/li>\n<li>Norway, \u201cThe King\u2019s Choice,\u201d Erik Poppe, director;<\/li>\n<li>Russia, \u201cParadise,\u201d Andrei Konchalovsky, director;<\/li>\n<li>Sweden, \u201cA Man Called Ove,\u201d Hannes Holm, director;<\/li>\n<li>Switzerland, \u201cMy Life as a Zucchini,\u201d Claude Barras, director.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Foreign Language Film nominations for 2016 are determined in two phases.<\/p>\n<p>The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Los Angeles-based Academy members, screened the original submissions in the category between mid-October and December 12. The group\u2019s top six choices, augmented by three additional selections voted by the Academy\u2019s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, constitute the shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>The shortlist will be winnowed down to the category\u2019s five nominees by specially invited committees in New York, Los Angeles and London. They will spend Friday, January 13, through Sunday, January 15, viewing three films each day and then casting their ballots.<\/p>\n<p>The competitive Foreign Language Film category was introduced in 1956 for the 29th Academy Awards. In celebration of its 60th anniversary, the Academy has created a complete playlist of acceptance speeches and a poster gallery of all the Foreign Language Film Oscar\u00ae winners.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations for the 89th Oscars\u00ae will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre\u00ae at Hollywood &amp; Highland Center\u00ae in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET\/4 p.m. PT.
