Will his eclectic team of singers, including the larger-than-life vocal virtuoso Fatman (40), gruff-voiced Freddy Lalendle (23) and exceptionally talented Zee Gqamana (23) and Craig Lucas (23) be strong enough to turn Kahn into the winning coach for the second year in a row? It all depends on who they will be up against in the teams of Kahn’s fellow coaches Karen Zoid, Lira and Bobby van Jaarsveld.

This week Sunday (7 May) fans will find out which talent Karen Zoid picks to mentor going forward. Student Amanda Faku (23) from Port Elizabeth already landed the first of the four spots in Karen’s team, knocking out youngster Rick Jansen (18) last week. So now Karen will pair up the remaining members in her team.

“Who will she pit against each other? And who will make it to the pivotal next round? It really is crunch time for #TeamKaren now,” says M-Net’s Head of Publicity, Lani Lombard. “Remember, this year’s live shows are going to be even bigger and better. They will play out in front of a bigger live audience and not all of the coaches will necessarily have a team member in the finals. Karen currently has a very strong team in the Knock-Outs and will have to make some tough calls this week.”

The following six talent will perform for the coveted spots in the Lives in #TeamKaren during this week’s Knock-Out show, after which #TeamLira will take to the stage.

Celest Schoeman (28) from Standfontein in the Western Cape was up against Marissa Petzer (22) from Stilfontein in her Battle round. Both powerhouse vocalists, who received four chair turns from the coaches in the Blind auditions, were tasked to sing the power ballad “Ain’t No Other Man” by Christina Aguilera, and coach Bobby van Jaarsveld thought their performance was “flippin’ phenomenal!”. Coach Karen had a difficult choice to make, and despite having mentored Marissa’s boyfriend Almur Marais into the finals last year, she opted to take Celest through to the Knock-Outs.

After receiving four chair turns in her Blind audition, Emma Ellis (21) from Port Elizabeth had a difficult road through the Battle rounds when Karen put her up against Christy Woolmington (20) from Johannesburg. Karen gave them the Christina Aguilera ballad “Beautiful” to sing and it was a fitting choice as both singers were struggling with believing in their own abilities throughout the rehearsals ahead of the show. “Real is the new perfect,” Karen advised her talent before they went on stage, and that’s exactly what they managed to demonstrate in their touching rendition of the song. Karen decided to pronounce the person who “knows herself the best” the winner, and that was vivacious Emma.

Stylish Lindo Sithole (22) from Pietermaritzburg wowed coach Karen when he held his own against a duo – The Massers – in the Battle rounds. She gave them the track “Missing” by Everything But The Girl to perform in their sing-off. “Shocking!” Lindo lamented, as he had never heard of the song, but with the help of Karen’s long-time muso friend and co-coach Emo Adams, Lindo and John and Lillian Masser did the hard work to turn the song into their own. After the moving performance with some incredible harmonies, Kahn told Karen that he would pick Lindo due to the “frailty” of his voice and the fact that “it bears his soul when he sings.” Karen agreed and chose Lindo for her Knock-Outs team.

PJ Pretorius (26) from Secunda received three chair turns from the coaches in his Blind audition before being paired up against Durban’s Chico Muya (24) in the Battle rounds. Coach Karen noted that both of these singers come across as quite young, so she chose a mature love song for them to perform, Bruce Springsteen’s “Secret Garden”. “It’s going to require a lot of emotional maturity,” she warned them. But the young gentlemen delivered in spades and left the coaches scratching their heads. “My mind is blown, that was so delicate, that was mesmerising,” Lira swooned. But when it came to crunch time, Karen opened the next door for PJ, straight into the Knock-Outs.

Samantha Leonard (24) from Kimberly earned herself a full house of turns from the coaches in her blistering Blind Audition, before performing against Armand Joubert (21) in a grueling Battle round that had the coaches gob-smacked. The two talent set the stage alight with The Darkness’s “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”, as both Armand and Samantha displayed what Karen called “an insane vocal range”. Initially, Samantha lacked some confidence when co-coach Emo Adams joined Karen to prepare them for their Battle, but a pep talk did the trick. Samantha’s boosted confidence coupled with Armand’s natural ability made for one of the most epic Battles of the night. “That was war! It was absolutely incredible, like something out of a movie!” Lira exclaimed. None of the coaches could give Karen advice on what to do, but due to the immense progress that she demonstrated, Karen chose Samantha as her winner, ushering her into the Knock-Outs.

Veronique Lalouette (35) from Johannesburg was the final talent in #TeamKaren to make it to the Knock-Outs. The professional musician was to sing against Durban vocal coach Sam Landers (30). “You’re the ‘vocal acrobats’ on the team,” Karen told them, so she assigned them the very challenging Mika hit “Grace Kelly” to perform. Co-coach Emo Adams helped them with some dramatic choreography, resulting in a spectacular ending to The Voice SA Season 2 Battles phase. “This is one of the most difficult songs ever!” Bobby marveled, which meant that coach Karen had a very difficult choice to make. In the end, Veronique’s technical prowess earned her a spot in the next rounds!

The Voice South Africa, sponsored by Dialdirect, is broadcast every Sunday night on M-Net channel 101 at 17:30 and every Monday night at 18:00 on M-Net City channel 115.

Viewers can also visit www.mnet.tv/thevoice to watch exclusive interviews with the coaches and talent, and follow all the breaking news and conversations around the show on Twitter @VoiceSA / #TheVoiceSA or on the official “Voice SA” Facebook page.
