You know it could connect with audiences and be a big seller but you need the funds and the guidance to allow you the time to focus on working on the film. This is when you may need development funding. At the “The Process of Seeking and Finding Development Funding” Producer Rory Downing will share his knowledge on:

What is Development Funding.

Who needs it?

Where to find it locally and internationally.

Identifying the audience for your film.

Working with Producers.

Working with Script Editors.

What the process from development to production can look like.

Rory Downing has over 14 years production experience in the South African Film and Television industry. Having spent the first 10 years on international facilitation working on feature films and TV series for networks such as BBC, HBO, ITV and Fox, he then turned his attention to local content. In 2011 he co produced two documentaries for SABC 1 entitled “Why are We So Angry?” and “Whizz kids of Mzansi”. In the same year he completed the first season of a technology show called “Technorati” for SABC3. From this experience Rory brings a high standard of project delivery and quality.

During this time Rory has successfully be involved with securing the Department of Trade and Industry Film and Television Rebates for productions, an amount of over R60 million. He is the founder of The African Storyteller Development Project, which is an initiative that promotes Writers from previously disadvantaged backgrounds in the Film industry and currently has a collection of 20 local stories in concept and script development stages. Due to lack of funding this initiative has seen little progress in the last few years; however Rory understands the need to develop this area, as a good script is the corner stone of a good film.

Currently he is working on two features; “Magic and Mining” and “The Adventures of Supermama” which are in script development and pre production respectively and a third project in script development “On Call” which is a documentary series, all which have been funded by the NFVF.

Bookings essential admin@writersguildsa.org<mailto:admin@writersguildsa.org>.
