{"id":4832,"date":"2017-08-16T21:26:48","date_gmt":"2017-08-16T19:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/?p=4832"},"modified":"2017-08-16T21:26:48","modified_gmt":"2017-08-16T19:26:48","slug":"the-academy-delves-into-latin-american-film-with-expansive-project-from-latin-america-to-hollywood-latino-film-culture-in-los-angeles-1967-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2017\/08\/16\/the-academy-delves-into-latin-american-film-with-expansive-project-from-latin-america-to-hollywood-latino-film-culture-in-los-angeles-1967-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"The Academy Delves Into Latin American Film With Expansive Project &#8220;From Latin America To Hollywood: Latino Film Culture In Los Angeles, 1967-2017&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2445\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/academylogo.jpg?resize=107%2C107\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"107\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Special guests include Lourdes Portillo, Cheech Marin, Guillermo del Toro and Edward James Olmos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present <a href=\"http:\/\/pstlala.oscars.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From Latin America to Hollywood: Latino Film Culture in Los Angeles, 1967\u20132017<\/a>, a series of film screenings, live conversations, oral histories, publications and a dedicated website exploring the shared influences of Latino and Latin American filmmakers and the work they created or presented in Los Angeles during the past half-century.\u00a0 The screening series, which runs from September 16, 2017 through January 18, 2018, is a part of the Academy\u2019s participation in the Getty-led Southern California-wide arts initiative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificstandardtime.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacific Standard Time: LA\/LA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Guest-curated by Oscar\u00ae-nominated documentarian Lourdes Portillo, From Latin America to Hollywood focuses on the social, cultural and political environment of the 1960s that sparked the Chicano and New Latin American cinema movements.\u00a0 The program highlights an extensive series of 25 oral histories of such notable Latino and Latin American filmmakers as Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n, Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, Gregory Nava, Lucrecia Martel, Patricia Cardoso and Luis Valdez, offering a rare opportunity for audiences to experience their perspectives firsthand.\u00a0 As part of the screening series, the directors\u2019 films will be presented together with public conversations about filmmaking and, in some cases, will premiere new Academy Film Archive restorations. The Academy\u2019s oral history interviews were filmed between May 2014 and September 2016 and can be viewed on the Academy\u2019s website <a href=\"http:\/\/pstlala.oscars.org\/interviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> beginning September 15.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy\u2019s publication for the project, titled <a href=\"http:\/\/pstlala.oscars.org\/ebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From Latin America to Hollywood: Latino Film Culture in Los Angeles 1967-2017<\/a>,\u00a0explores the intersections, inspirations, and creative intentions of a wide-ranging group of Latino and Latin American filmmakers through the gathering, and close reading, of their oral histories, by an acclaimed group of scholars and writers.
