{"id":5065,"date":"2017-09-18T15:46:29","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T13:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/?p=5065"},"modified":"2017-09-18T15:46:29","modified_gmt":"2017-09-18T13:46:29","slug":"new-line-cinemas-it-a-monster-hit-at-south-african-box-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2017\/09\/18\/new-line-cinemas-it-a-monster-hit-at-south-african-box-office\/","title":{"rendered":"New Line Cinemas &#8220;IT&#8221; A Monster Hit At South African Box Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New Line Cinema\u2019s Acclaimed Chiller Scares up a Record-Breaking\u00a0 R5,118,107 on its Opening Weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IT - Official Trailer 1\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xKJmEC5ieOk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Johannesburg, September 18th, 2017 \u2013 New Line Cinema\u2019s \u201cIT,\u201d the critically lauded big-screen adaptation of Stephen King\u2019s perennial best seller, floated to the top of the South Africa\u2019s box office on its opening weekend, earning R5,118,107 across 67 cinemas, including R1,349,718 in IMAX theatres, and still climbing.\u00a0 Directed by Andy Muschietti (Mama), the much-anticipated horror thriller is the biggest Warner Bros. opening weekend for 2017 (surpassing previous best \u201cKong: Skull Island\u201d by 19%).\u00a0 It is also the biggest horror film opening of all time surpassing previous best by 288% and is the 11th biggest opening for 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In making the announcement, Cameron Hogg said, \u201c\u2018IT\u2019 is the film that everyone is talking about, whether fans of the genre or not, driving moviegoers across South Africa to brave the cinema for their own encounter with Pennywise.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t be more thrilled with the results, and congratulate New Line Cinema, director Andy Muschietti and his phenomenal cast and crew on this fantastic opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New Line Cinema\u2019s horror thriller \u201cIT\u201d tells the story of seven young outcasts growing up in the township of Derry, Maine, who call themselves the Losers\u2019 Club.\u00a0 Each of them has been ostracized for one reason or another; each has a target on their back from the local pack of bullies\u2026and all have seen their inner fears come to life in the form of an ancient shape shifting predator they can only call It.<\/p>\n<p>For as long as their town has existed, Derry has been the entity\u2019s hunting ground, emerging from the sewers every 27 years to feed on the terrors of its chosen prey: Derry\u2019s children.\u00a0 Banding together over one horrifying and exhilarating summer, the Losers form a close bond to help them overcome their own fears and stop a killing cycle that began on a rainy day, with a small boy chasing a paper boat as it swept down a storm drain\u2026and into the hands of Pennywise the Clown.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Andy Muschietti (\u201cMama\u201d), \u201cIT\u201d is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades.\u00a0 First published in 1986, IT became an instant classic.\u00a0 It continues to be counted among the best and most influential works of the undisputed literary master of horror, inspiring numerous film and television projects in the years that have followed.<\/p>\n<p>The film stars Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd (\u201cAllegiant,\u201d TV\u2019s \u201cHemlock Grove\u201d) as the story\u2019s central villain, Pennywise.\u00a0 An ensemble of young actors also star in the film, including Jaeden Lieberher (\u201cMidnight Special\u201d), Jeremy Ray Taylor (\u201cAlvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip\u201d), Sophia Lillis (\u201c37\u201d), Finn Wolfhard (TV\u2019s \u201cStranger Things\u201d), Wyatt Oleff (\u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d), Chosen Jacobs (upcoming \u201cCops and Robbers\u201d), Jack Dylan Grazer (\u201cTales of Halloween\u201d), Nicholas Hamilton (\u201cCaptain Fantastic\u201d) and Jackson Robert Scott, making his film debut.<\/p>\n<p>Muschietti directed \u201cIT\u201d from a screenplay by Chase Palmer &amp; Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman, based on the novel by King.\u00a0 Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg and Barbara Muschietti produced the film, with Dave Neustadter, Walter Hamada, Richard Brener, Toby Emmerich, Marty P. Ewing, Doug Davison, Jon Silk and Niija Kuykendall serving as executive producers.<\/p>\n<p>The behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Chung-Hoon Chung (\u201cMe and Earl and the Dying Girl,\u201d \u201cOldboy\u201d), production designer Claude Par\u00e9 (\u201cRise of the Planet of the Apes\u201d), editor Jason Ballantine (\u201cMad Max: Fury Road\u201d), and costume designer Janie Bryant (TV\u2019s \u201cMad Men\u201d).\u00a0 The music was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch (\u201cAnnabelle: Creation\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>New Line Cinema presents a Vertigo Entertainment\/Lin Pictures\/Katzsmith Production, \u201cIT.\u201d\u00a0 The film is being distributed worldwide by Warner Bros.
