{"id":5163,"date":"2017-10-03T20:00:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-03T18:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/?p=5163"},"modified":"2017-10-03T20:00:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-03T18:00:27","slug":"academy-reveals-winning-nicholl-screenwriters-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2017\/10\/03\/academy-reveals-winning-nicholl-screenwriters-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Academy Reveals Winning Nicholl Screenwriters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Scripts to be performed at live read in November<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four individuals and one writing team have been selected as winners of the 2017 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition.\u00a0 The fellows will each receive a $35,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Awards Presentation &amp; Live Read on Thursday, November 2, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.\u00a0 For the fifth consecutive year, an ensemble of actors will be reading selected scenes from the winning scripts.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 winners are (listed alphabetically by author):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vigil Chime<\/strong>, \u201cBring Back Girl\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>SJ Inwards<\/strong>, \u201cJellyfish Summer\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Max Lance and Jen Bailey<\/strong>, \u201cThe Queen of Sleaze\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>KG Rockmaker<\/strong>, \u201cLast Days of Winter\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cesar Vitale<\/strong>, \u201cThe Great Nothing\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A total of 7,102 scripts were submitted for this year\u2019s competition. Nine individual screenwriters and one writing team were selected as finalists.\u00a0 Their scripts were then read and judged by the Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee, who ultimately voted the winners.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 finalists are (listed alphabetically by author):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Donn Kennedy<\/strong>, \u201cRoll the Bones\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lillian Wang<\/strong>, \u201cP.O. Box 1142\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sharon Walker<\/strong>, \u201cThe Cutting Season\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michael A. Wright<\/strong>, \u201cStill Life\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chris Ryan Yeazel<\/strong>, \u201cThe Savage\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fellowships are awarded with the understanding that the recipients will each complete a feature-length screenplay during their fellowship year.\u00a0 The Academy acquires no rights to the works of Nicholl fellows and does not involve itself commercially in any way with their completed scripts.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee is chaired by writer Robin Swicord.\u00a0 The members of the committee are writers Tina Gordon Chism, Larry Karaszewski, Dan Petrie Jr., Eric Roth, Misan Sagay, Kirsten Smith and Tyger Williams; animation director Jennifer Yuh Nelson; cinematographer Steven Poster; executives Marcus Hu and Bill Mechanic; producers Stephanie Allain, Albert Berger, Julia Chasman, Julie Lynn and Robert W. Shapiro; and sound Bobbi Banks.<\/p>\n<p>The global competition, which aims to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters, has awarded 152 fellowships since it began in 1986.\u00a0 In 2017 several past Nicholl fellows added to their feature film and television credits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allison Anders directed and Nikole Beckwith co-wrote \u201cBeaches,\u201d which aired on Lifetime. Allison also directed episodes of \u201cRiverdale\u201d and \u201cTime After Time.\u201d\u00a0 Nikole co-wrote \u201cThree Generations,\u201d which opened theatrically in May.<\/li>\n<li>Destin Cretton and Andrew Lanham wrote and Destin directed \u201cThe Glass Castle,\u201d which opened theatrically in June. Destin and Andrew co-wrote \u201cThe Shack,\u201d which opened theatrically in March.<\/li>\n<li>Sean Robert Daniels was on the writing staff of \u201cHigh Rollers\u201d and was head writer on \u201cGrit,\u201d both of which aired on South African television.<\/li>\n<li>Bob Edwards co-wrote and produced the feature documentary \u201cThe Last Laugh,\u201d which opened theatrically in March.<\/li>\n<li>Jacob Estes co-wrote \u201cRings,\u201d which opened theatrically in February.<\/li>\n<li>Ken Kristensen is a writer on the forthcoming TV series \u201cThe Punisher\u201d on Netflix and \u201cHappy\u201d on SyFy.<\/li>\n<li>Tianna Lanham co-wrote \u201cIl Nido\u201d (\u201cThe Nest\u201d), which had its North American premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.<\/li>\n<li>Karen Moncrieff directed and Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote \u201cThe Keeping Hours,\u201d which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
