<\/p>\nThe official soundtrack to the upcoming Gersh Kgamedi movie has been released and the track list is sure to be a hit with local music fans. The \u2018She is King\u2019 album features songs from big stars including Brenda Fassie, Lucky Dube, Vusi Khumalo, Simpiwe Dana, PJ Powers, Joseph Shabalala, and more, as well as hot new tracks by Gugu Zulu and Mandisa Nduna. The film opens in cinemas on 1 December, just in time for the holiday season.<\/p>\n

\u2018She is King\u2019, a musical celebration of Zulu culture, stars Khabonina Qubeka, Khanyi Mbau, Mandisa Nduna, Aubrey Poo, and the fresh-faced Gugu Zulu, to name a few. Directed by Gersh, it presents the City of Gold as the African Broadway, and tells the story of Khanyisile (Gugu Zulu), a talented young singer, dancer and actor who wants to be a star.<\/p>\n
Khanyisile travels from her home in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, to audition for a musical to be staged at the Joburg Theatre, based on the life of powerful Zulu Queen Mkabayi ka Jama \u2013 Shaka\u2019s aunt. She played a major role in Zulu history, deposing various kings and helping them ascend to the throne at a time of great historical importance to the Zulu nation.<\/p>\n
A showcase for some of the best South African music, the film includes songs by international stars like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Juluka and Brenda Fassie, as well as a number of traditional Zulu musicians.<\/p>\n
The first single, a revamped version of Brenda Fassie\u2019s hit \u2018Higher and Higher\u2019, sung by Gugu Zulu and Mandisa Nduna, dropped early in November. Talented singer, songwriter and actress Gugu Zulu made it to the Top 16 of Idols SA this year and is also known for her role as Nandi in e.tv\u2019s \u2018The Alliance\u2019. Uber cool rapper Mandisa Nduna is an award-winning stage, film and television actress who rose to fame in the film \u2018Between Friends\u2019, and is also known to television audiences as Thuli in e.tv\u2019s \u2018Hustle\u2019. She and partner Thishiwe Ziqubu were recently crowned Cutest Couple of the Year at the annual Feather Awards.<\/p>\n
The second single from the album \u2013 \u2018She\u2019s a King\u2019 \u2013 also by Nduna and Zulu, is available for download online. Other notable tracks include Simphiwe Dana\u2019s \u2018Iliwa Lam\u2019, Gugu Zulu\u2019s \u2018Scamtho\u2019 (composed by Vusi Khumalo), and \u2018Too Irie\u2019 by Mo\u2019faya feat. Jahzo, originally composed by Lucky Dube and remixed by K Muambadzi. The film also features some great tracks by DJ Shimza (\u2018Party ka Shimza\u2019), flamboyant singer Moonchild (\u2018Mr Chow\u2019) and hip-hop star Ifani.<\/p>\n

\u2018She is King\u2019 had its premi\u00e8re on 26 October at the Joburg Theatre. Packed with celebrities, the red-carpet event proved to be a hit with music and movie fans who came out in all their finery for the glitzy evening.<\/p>\n
The film was made with the support of the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), MNET, Indigenous Films and the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC), and will be distributed in South Africa by Indigenous Film Distribution. It opens nationwide on 1 December.<\/p>\n
