{"id":7280,"date":"2018-07-26T16:31:50","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T14:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/?p=7280"},"modified":"2018-07-26T16:31:50","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T14:31:50","slug":"durban-filmmart-awards-2018-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/blog\/2018\/07\/26\/durban-filmmart-awards-2018-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Durban FilmMart Awards 2018 Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a bumper year for this year\u2019s Durban FilmMart (DFM), the industry development programme of the eThekwini Municipality\u2019s Durban Film Office and Durban International Film Festival (Centre for Creative Arts, UKZN), which ended with an awards ceremony at the Southern Sun Maharani Hotel in Durban, South Africa on Monday, July 23.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7282\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DFM-awards.jpg?resize=550%2C287\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DFM-awards.jpg?w=550&amp;ssl=1 550w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.samdb.co.za\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/DFM-awards.jpg?resize=300%2C157&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the DFM\u2019s awards ceremony, Toni Monty, Head of the Durban Film Office and the Durban FilmMart, said, \u201cAs one of the most important, film industry events and film finance platforms on the continent, we are really pleased that we have grown the DFM substantially this year with 877 delegates attending. We had over 40\u00a0countries participating this year, of which 19 were from Africa.\u00a0\u00a0A total number of 52 projects were pitched to potential partners, financiers, filmmakers, producers, distributors and agents during countless meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Key to the value that the Durban FilmMart provides filmmakers are the many meetings and networking sessions that are held between delegates over the four days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe important work we do to enable the film-makers, would not be possible without our partners and sponsors,\u201d said Monty, \u201cAnd we would like to thank our partner markets, development organisations and funding bodies with deep gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work we do at this Mart supports the DIFF and DFO\u2019s vision to dynamically grow the industry and bring African cinema to its own people and to global platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen official DFM film projects in development were presented at the Finance Forum through the sponsorship of the Industrial Development Corporation and the National Film and Video Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Supported by Berlinale Talents, the Goethe-Institut and the German Embassy and\u00a0in cooperation with Fipresci,\u00a0Durban Talents was able to host 16 young filmmakers, and 3 Talents Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hosted a number of scriptwriters\u2019 labs including Jumpstart which is supported by Produire au Sud, France and the Realness Script Writing Residency. Hot Docs Canada, mentored 11 documentary projects in development and six CineFam Africa television series projects were mentored by Caribbean Tales, Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize the important role that the eThekwini Municipality, the principal funder of the DFM plays in its success,\u201d continued Monty. \u201cThe City\u2019s involvement actively enables the economic growth of the industry, and we thank them for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DFM hosted a number of delegations this year including the in bound delegation through the Department of Trade and Industry, the BRICS Film Festival delegation through the Department of Arts and Culture. Special\u00a0thanks\u00a0must go to the Canadian High Commission and US Embassy and the French Institute (IFAS), NFVF and KZN Film Commission for their support in bringing in delegates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Awards\/Grants:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA)\u00a0awarded the most promising documentary project at the DFM,\u00a0\u00a0Cheese Girl, (South Africa) &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Producer: Batana Vundla, Marion Isaacs,\u00a0Director: Milisuthando Bongela\u00a0with an opportunity to attend the\u00a0 IDFA Forum, one of the top gatherings for documentary filmmakers, producers, commissioning editors, funds, private financiers and other documentary filmmakers in Europe, in November.<\/li>\n<li>The broadcast stream,\u00a0Afridocs, that flights African and other international documentaries across 49 countries of sub-Saharan Africa on a weekly basis, gave a \u20ac2500 award, funded by the Bertha Foundation, to\u00a0Zinder, The Seeds of Violence, (Niger) &#8211;\u00a0Producer: Clara Vuillermoz, Ousmane Samassekou,\u00a0Director: Aicha Macky.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0CineMart\u00a0Award, sponsored by the co-production market of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, went to the fiction project,\u00a0Nyanga \/ The Horn, (Zimbabwe) &#8211;\u00a0Producer: Sue-Ellen Chitunya, Brett Michael Innes, Director: Brett Michael Innes.\u00a0The project\u00a0is given an opportunity to attend the Rotterdam Lab, is a five-day training and networking event for producers from all over the world.<\/li>\n<li>Produire au Sud of Festival des 3 Continents (Nantes), awarded the fiction film\u00a0Porta-Retrato, (Mozambique) -Producer: Aldino Languana, Osvaldo Lupini Bambamba,\u00a0Director: Orlando Mabasso Jr.\u00a0an opportunity to attend its developmental workshop programme, PAS, where they will be given tools, expertise, and opportunities to develop European networks.<\/li>\n<li>Videovision Entertainment\u00a0awarded the \u201cBest South African Film Project\u201d to\u00a0Snake, (South Africa) &#8211;\u00a0Producer: Paul Egan, Stanford Gibson and Mustapha Hendricks,\u00a0Director: Meg Rickards.\u00a0They receive\u00a0a prize valued at R75 000, which guarantees its release once it is completed. The prize also includes marketing and distribution support from Videovision Entertainment.<\/li>\n<li>Versfeld &amp; Associates, publicity consultants awarded\u00a0Nyanga \/ The Horn, (Zimbabwe) &#8211;\u00a0Producer: Sue-Ellen Chitunya, Brett Michael Innes, Director: Brett Michael Innes the development of a press kit.<\/li>\n<li>S\u00f8rfond\u00a0awarded the project\u00a0How to Steal a Country\u00a0\u2013 Producers: Rehad Desai and Zivia Desai, Director: Mark Kaplan with an\u00a0opportunity to pitch at the S\u00f8rfond Pitching Forum in Oslo later this year.<\/li>\n<li>CineFAM-Africa\u00a0Incubator Accelerator Programme award to pitch at the Caribbean Tales Film Festival in Toronto, went to\u00a0The Summit Club\u00a0by Layla Swart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>New awards this year include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hot Docs Blue Ice Award, a cash prize of 2000 Candian Dollars went to the documentary project\u00a0The\u00a0Master\u2019s Plan\u00a0\u2013 Producer: Hanne Phlypo and Director Yuri Ceuninck.<\/li>\n<li>11th\u00a0Talents Durban \u201cTalents Press\u201d Recognition Award\u00a0went to\u00a0Cornelia Glele.<\/li>\n<li>Durban FilmMart Award\u00a0for the Durban Talents Project Selected as a project for DFM 2019 went to\u00a0When Shadows Move &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0by Aliki Saragas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The DFM ended last night, but the Durban International Film Festival continues until July 29. There is a free industry &#8211; Isiphethu opposite the Southern Sun Garden Court Marine Parade for seminars and workshops for the public and emerging filmmakers, as well as the free screenings at various venues, including the Wavescapes Surf Film festival at Ushaka until Friday, JuLY 27.
