The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (September 4) to present Honorary Awards to publicist Marvin Levy, composer Lalo Schifrin and actress Cicely Tyson, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. The three Oscar\u00ae statuettes and Thalberg Award will be presented at the Academy\u2019s 10th Annual Governors Awards on Sunday, November 18, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center\u00ae.<\/p>\n
\u201cChoosing the honorees for its awards each year is the happiest of all the Board of Governors\u2019 work. And this year, its selection of five iconic artists was made with universal acclaim by the Academy\u2019s 54 spirited governors,\u201d said Academy President John Bailey.<\/p>\n
Levy began his career in publicity working for MGM in New York City before joining Columbia Pictures in Hollywood, where he guided the advertising for films including \u201cThe Deep\u201d and \u201cKramer vs. Kramer.\u201d His work for the 1977 film \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind\u201d marked the beginning of a four-decade-long partnership with Steven Spielberg. Levy has held positions at Amblin Entertainment, DreamWorks Studios and Amblin Partners, and has worked on publicity campaigns for such films as \u201cE.T. The Extra Terrestrial,\u201d \u201cBack to the Future,\u201d \u201cWho Framed Roger Rabbit,\u201d \u201cSchindler\u2019s List,\u201d \u201cSaving Private Ryan,\u201d \u201cAmerican Beauty,\u201d \u201cGladiator\u201d and \u201cLincoln.\u201d Levy is the first publicist to receive an honorary Oscar.<\/p>\n
Born and raised in Argentina, Schifrin studied classical music and jazz in France before beginning to compose for film in Buenos Aires in the mid-1950s. He has written scores for more than 100 films, including \u201cThe Cincinnati Kid,\u201d \u201cBullitt,\u201d \u201cDirty Harry,\u201d \u201cEnter the Dragon\u201d and \u201cRush Hour.\u201d His memorable theme for the television series \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d has been a hallmark of the recent film series. He has received six Oscar\u00ae nominations, for the original scores for \u201cCool Hand Luke\u201d (1967), \u201cThe Fox\u201d (1968), \u201cVoyage of the Damned\u201d (1976) and \u201cThe Amityville Horror\u201d (1979), the original song \u201cPeople Alone\u201d from \u201cThe Competition\u201d (1980) and the adaptation score for \u201cThe Sting II\u201d (1983).<\/p>\n
Raised in Harlem, Tyson began her career as a model and a theater actress, appearing both on Broadway and Off-Broadway. After playing small roles in feature films and television, she was cast as Portia in \u201cThe Heart Is a Lonely Hunter\u201d in 1968. Four years later, she received an Academy Award\u00ae nomination for her leading performance in \u201cSounder.\u201d Her other notable film credits include \u201cThe River Niger,\u201d \u201cFried Green Tomatoes,\u201d \u201cDiary of a Mad Black Woman,\u201d \u201cThe Help,\u201d \u201cAlex Cross\u201d and \u201cLast Flag Flying.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Kennedy\/Marshall producing partnership, formed in 1991, has generated Best Picture nominations for \u201cThe Sixth Sense\u201d (1999), \u201cSeabiscuit\u201d (2003), \u201cMunich\u201d (2005) and \u201cThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button\u201d (2008). Kennedy\/Marshall Company productions also include \u201cCongo,\u201d all five \u201cBourne\u201d films, and \u201cThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly.\u201d Prior to forming Kennedy\/Marshall, the duo co-founded Amblin Productions with Steven Spielberg, sharing a Best Picture nomination for \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d (1985). Additionally, Marshall received a Best Picture nomination for \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark\u201d (1981), while Kennedy was nominated in the same category for \u201cE.T. The Extra-Terrestrial\u201d (1982), \u201cWar Horse\u201d (2011) and \u201cLincoln\u201d (2012). Kennedy is the first woman to receive the Thalberg Award.<\/p>\n
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given \u201cto honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.\u201d The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, a bust of the motion picture executive, is presented to creative producers \u201cwhose body of work reflects a consistently high quality of motion picture production.\u201d<\/p>\n
