Jordan (\u201cBlack Panther,\u201d \u201cCreed,\u201d upcoming \u201cCreed II\u201d) and Oscar winners Jamie Foxx (\u201cRay,\u201d \u201cBaby Driver,\u201d \u201cDjango: Unchained\u201d) and Brie Larson (\u201cRoom,\u201d \u201cThe Glass Castle,\u201d upcoming \u201cCaptain Marvel\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0Award-winning filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (\u201cThe Glass Castle,\u201d \u201cShort Term 12\u201d) is directing \u201cJust Mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n
A powerful and thought-provoking true story, \u201cJust Mercy\u201d follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice.\u00a0 After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs.\u00a0 Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson).\u00a0 One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. \u00a0In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds\u2014and the system\u2014stacked against them.<\/p>\n
The film is being produced by two-time Oscar nominee Gil Netter (\u201cLife of Pi,\u201d \u201cThe Blind Side\u201d) and Asher Goldstein (\u201cShort Term 12\u201d), with Mike Drake, Michael B. Jordan, Bryan Stevenson, Gabriel Hammond, Daniel Hammond and Niija Kuykendall serving as executive producers.\u00a0\u00a0Cretton is helming the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Andrew Lanham (\u201cThe Glass Castle\u201d), based on Stevenson\u2019s bookJust Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption.\u00a0\u00a0Published in 2014 by Spiegel & Grau, the book has spent 118 weeks on\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0Best Sellers List, and counting, and was named one of the year\u2019s best books by a number of top publications, including\u00a0TIME Magazine.\u00a0\u00a0For the book, Stevenson also won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence, an NAACP Image Award, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Nonfiction.<\/p>\n
The main cast also includes O\u2019Shea Jackson Jr. (\u201cStraight Outta Compton\u201d) as Anthony Ray Hinton, another wrongly convicted death row inmate whose cause is taken up by Bryan; Rob Morgan (\u201cMudbound\u201d) as Herbert Richardson, who also sits on death row awaiting his fate; and Tim Blake Nelson (\u201cWormwood\u201d) as Ralph Myers, whose pivotal testimony against Walter McMillian is called into question.<\/p>\n
The creative team working with Cretton behind the scenes includes director of photography Brett Pawlak, production designer Sharon Seymour, editor Nat Sanders and composer Joel P. West, all of whom previously collaborated with the director on \u201cThe Glass Castle.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0They are joined by costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck (\u201cDetroit,\u201d \u201cRoman J. Israel, Esq.\u201d).<\/p>\n
\u201cJust Mercy\u201d is being shot almost entirely on location in and around Atlanta, Georgia, with a few scenes also filmed in Montgomery, Alabama.<\/p>\n
